The Decade Isn't Over

So why do people keep saying it is?

There was no A.D. 0, only A.D. 1; therefore each decade from there on out must begin with a 1 and end with 0.

Then the year 2000 was not the start of a new millennium the year 2001 was.

Which is why I had parties on both the turn of 2000 and 2001!

But no, Arpy, because the decade started on Jan 1, 2000, and ten years later it ends Dec 31, 2009 (or really, the moment it becomes Jan 1, 2010). Although if we count back like that, and use your logic...ah I see.

The question is how can we convince everyone to count from 2001 to the end of 2010?

I think most people count decades by the digit in the tens place. Otherwise, by your system, 1990 would be part of the '80s but not part of the '90s, and that just doesn't make sense.

This. The decade is almost over, the first ten years of the 2000s. You're right that the millennium didn't start until 2001, but we're not talking about the millennium, we're talking about the decade. ;)

Aaah, it's the end of time as we know it! We must resolve this conundrum by Thursday night before the continuum implodes!

I hope you brought a calculator and a snack because it's going to be a long night with no break.
