Prettiful Picture Painted In Paintshop Pro Part 2

It had to happen. Characters in books can change considerably throughout the course of the book.

I tried making the shading more obvious this time; last time it was a bit too subtle. Enjoy.

Because I'm feeling nice, I'll give you some backstory. This guy is Daanikai, an elite swordsman. He's sent out on one particularly dangerous mission, accompanied by an experimental lifeform - a 'robot' powered by magic. Near the end of the book he gets his arm biten off, and the 'robot' manages to create a mechanical arm for him. So there you go.

As I said before, it's all good, except the head. It needs more detail, the eyes are barely expressive, the nose is stubby, the face lacks the minute characteristics a better face would have and in general it's the only bad part of the drawing, coz I love the rest of it.

Well, this is my style, which is mainly manga-based, so the faces don't have a lot of detail.

Inspired by FMA?

Nope. I came up with the idea about 5 years ago, when FMA didn't even exist here, to my knowledge. Just a coincidence.

Nice. The story continues.

You still can recognize him. From the face mainly, but also from the body proportions and the clawed hands/feet. Half Dragon? That explains it :).

The mech hand looks really nice, so does the red glow. The muscles look natural, though it is clear that this guy has either been going to the gym or led a tough life (in this case it would be the latter, no?). The cape looks sinister. All the details of the mech arm create a nice contrast with the rest of the body. Still I think it isn't that different from the rest of the character style-wise. Nice CGing, the mist and shadow effects work well.

But oh boy he has gone worse. It's logical--it's not easy to change the path you're walking. The cape, the lack of the shirt and the arm--especially the arm--make a huge difference. I can't help that he reminds me of Anakin, who also lost his original arm and got a mechanical one.

He's now holding the sword in his right hand. I guess the mech arm is stronger than the original one. Which is scary, really, because he has gained power through his transformation. That might make him want more.

Half dragon explains a lot.

I thought of the red glow as a metaphor for a heart. Originally, he had his left arm missing, and the lens was directly over his heart, but then I looked at the original character sketch and realised it should be the other way round. I'm glad the muscles look natural, they're hard to get right. And he has been going to a gym, actually. Or at least, a fantasy equivalent. It's interesting that you think the cape looks sinister, as it's the same one as the first pic I posted.

I'm trying to make the artwork look a bit cel-shaded, if that means anything to you.

He'll be even worse by the end of the book. It was tricky deciding how he could wear a shirt, as it couldn't cover up the lens. So I just settled for the cape instead. Yes, I've also noticed the similarity to Anakin, but his was just a forearm, whereas this is the entire arm, shoulder, and a few internal organs too.

I'm amazed that you can tell so much from a single picture. And that you always seem to be right. :D

Sweet pic Seran, you should be proud of yourself for such a good masterpiece. The detail isn't too complex or too simple, sorta in between. The characters profile sounds quite mysterious and dangerous, wonder if you might be able to give at least a page from your first novel yet?

Also, whens the Xion thing being posted?
