Cultures are defined on their abilities to effectively communicate. Unless there is no way your abbreviation or acronym can be understood to mean anything else (i.e. BOD as Bulk Order Deed) in the given general context, SPELL IT OUT.

However, the only acronym that I really like is KotOR (Knights of the Old Republic), ZOMG (Zoh my Golly!) and I.D.N.M.F.T.T.M.W.M.F.A. (I don't need my friends to tell me who my friends are). So this is dang easy.

That is usually supposed to be preceded by a period anyway. A lot of people don't even know what the file formats stand for.
