Name: Chaos

Game: Final Fantasy (and Dawn of Souls), Final Fantasy VII, Dirge of Cerberus, Final Fantasy XII

Other Appearances in FF Series: Final Fantasy Unlimited

Class: Ultimate Evil (FF1)

Other Classifications: Limit Break (FF7), Omega's Squire (DoC), Esper (FF12)

Attack: Hurricane (FF12)

Chaos first appeared as the main boss of Final Fantasy. He was originally known as Garland, a knight who forges an unholy alliance with the Four Fiends, entering a 2000-year loop which renders him practically immortal. He transforms into Chaos at the end of the game.

Chaos then made its second appearance in Final Fantasy VII as the Final Limit Break for Vincent Valentine. Although it didn't serve much purpose in the game, it had a bigger role in Dirge of Cerberus. In Dirge of Cerberus, Chaos is a sentient xenoform of the planet. According to an ancient Cetran tablet, Chaos is "soul wrought of terra corrupt" and "Omega's squire to the lofty heavens". This indicates that Chaos is a harbinger of lifestream and its job is to "scourge the world of all things living, sending them back to the Lifestream" for Omega. When Omega makes its journey to the stars, Chaos is left to remain with the dying planet. The Planet also created a "Protomateria" meant to control Chaos and prolong awaking Omega. Lucrecia finds a way to create Chaos through Vincent using the "Chaos gene". She also implants the Protomateria in him to help him control it. In the end, it is through Chaos that Vincent stops Omega, returning both to the planet.

In Final Fantasy: Unlimited, Chaos is in the form of a snotty, fat boy called Earl Tyrant. He is also the king of the fantasy world. When human, he's constantly eating "food", which is really emotions like fear and anger created by his machinations on the main protagonists. He searches out Omega so that he can recombine it and complete his plan to dominate absolutely everything. Earl Tyrant can transform into Chaos as well, which he does so at the end of the anime.

In FF12, Chaos is just an Esper. The Clan Primer states that he Vrishabha Ascendant. Tutelary deity of the sacred crystals fasioned by the gods at the time of the Great Making. Created in opposition to Mitron the Chastiser, scion of light. Upon entering the world of Man, he was enveloped in the turmoil rampant there. Lost, he died and was reborn countless times, a walker of life's wheel, eventually to rage against the gods that had so fated him. By sitting in meditation upon the Uneh Pedestal does he clear heart and mind until all that has order and reason and thought is made as nothing.

As a huge FFI buff, I always did think Chaos was the best final boss. Nice pics, never seen those before. I always wondered, were Garland/Chaos the same being?

He recieved power from the Four Fiends which helped him become Chaos. So if anyone was powerful enough like Garland and make that kinda deal, they could have become Chaos as well.
