Breakdown Part 1

So, I'm going to give a little mini-review of each MOC entered into my contest, talk about what I liked and did not like about them, and then talk about how I awarded them Bonus Points. Might as well start with first place after all (this is most likely going to be a tl;dr type entry, so if you want to skip to where I review your entry, feel free to do so):

Alchemyst's Robocop A-14

So, first things first, I do not like the lower legs at all. Usually I'm fond of this kind of leg, but there's no real transition from the connector to the round bricks. I think if the lower legs were done differently, I'd like this even more. Because, aside from the lower legs, I really like this MOC. I like the direction the MOC was taken in. Sure, it doesn't bear much resemblance to my MOC, but it has the core aspects of the MOC (integrated cordak blaser, robot, cop), and I like how it turned out. The integration of a sound brick was pretty cool, as well. As for how I awarded it Bonus Points (BP from here on because I'm lazy), I gave the MOC 10 BP. The only point out of the basic 11 points that this MOC didn't get was the point for Obscurity, as I was totally expecting him to make this since he had asked about making it this way. I almost gave it one less point for shaping/flow on account of the lower legs, but the torso was cool enough, to me, to redeem that point.

Veq's Prometheus

My original Prometheus is one of my favorite MOCs of mine, just because it was so weird and different for me at the time that I made it. With few exceptions, before Prometheus, most of my MOCS followed pretty humanoid/Bionicle-y proportions and it was also one of the first MOCs that I made that was spindly. Also, my style and Veq's style has it's similarities, so I was expecting this to be pretty good before I even looked at it. And I wasn't disappointed. There are a couple of things I don't like a bout the MOC, mainly the lower torso, but I thought that the way that he had remade Prometheus was really cool. As for BP, I gave this MOC 7. I gave one point for originality, three points for shaping and technique, two points for extra difficulty, and one point for obscurity, as I wasn't expecting Veq to make Prometheus, but rather my Tin Man. Also, Veq provided a justification for why his MOC was better, and while that didn't factor into how it placed, I appreciated it, as few people did.

Force Unbleached's Amalgam

I think this MOC is really cool. This was something straight out of left field, as I wasn't expecting it at all. It was a very pleasant surprise. The MOC is a little rough around the edges (though, so was my original Amalgam), but I liked the various techniques and shapes and such that he managed to pack in there. If the lower part of the body wasn't so boxy, this would have won second place. As for the bonus point break down, this got 11 BP (so that means that no one got over 11, as this MOC had the most BP). I gave it full marks in all of the categories due to how well it turned out, the different types of parts used, the different techniques used, and it's overall shape. It almost lost a point for the boxyness of the lower torso, but I felt that using Meltdown's head for a foot and the wheel leg easily counter balanced that.

Brickeen's Robocop A-13

I really wanted to give Brickeens a prize for this MOC, as he technically got 3rd place (I only gave prizes to the top two places as well as the MOC that received the most BP, for those of you just now tuning in), but I just didn't have anything to give out that I felt would be a fitting prize. That, and I had already said in the original contest post that I wouldn't be giving out a prize for third place. If Alchemyst and Force Unbleached hadn't entered such cool MOCs, you'd have gotten some sort of prize. And besides, I think that Brickeen's Robocop is pretty spiffy. I dig the angled Cordak blasters and the torso in general. I don't really care for the limbs on this MOC. Well, I don't like the lower limbs to be specific. I like the upper legs and upper arms. As for BP scoring, this MOC ended up with 10 BP. It lost a point in the shaping and technique department for the lower limbs. And it didn't place higher because your voting actually did matter, and it seemed to me that more people mentioned Veq's MOC over Brickeens combined with the fact that Brickeens didn't really take the MOC in a different direction than where it was originally. Sure, it was a great recreation in his style of one of my MOCs, and its most definitely better than the original, but it didn't seem to differ visually from the original as the other entries did. Again, the Alchemyst's entry didn't realy help Brickeen's chances, as I saw one MOC who was very visually different from the original and another that was very visually similar, and the one that was similar became more boring, I guess. That's the risk you take with remakes: if it's too out there, no one will know what it's supposed to be, but if it's too close to home, it's going to be less interesting. It's still a great MOC and one of my favorites from this contest, but it was a little too ho-hum to make it into the top two.

Protosteel's JUGL

I really dug what Protosteel did for his MOC. There are some interesting shapes, the color blocking is pretty sweet in some places, and he actually made ROAT8's wheel, which is has a slight learning curve to it (IMO, as once you can figure out how it's made it's pretty easy). This MOC tied for fourth place. There are a few things I don't like about it though. The use of rubber bands on the mask is disconcerting, as well as the exposed sockets on the arms. I don't really care for the flame piece on the pelvis, but otherwise I can dig it. I also don't really care for the exposed curved triangle liftarm doohickey's on the side of the wheel. This MOC scored 8 BP, Getting all of the points except for the one obscurity point and two of the shaping and technique points.

Optimus Convoy's Topsy//Turvy

This is another MOC that suffered from looking too much like the original (in fact, I thought it was the original from the thumbnail the first time i saw it. I don't care for the exposed axles and such on the lower torso in the "blue on top" form, but other wise it was nice. I like how he did the upper arms in the "red on top" form, and i like the update he gave the faces. This got 9 BP as well and tied Protosteel for fourth place. It got all of the points except for two points in the shaping and technique category.

And, in an effort to spare my fingers and your eyeballs (and brains), I'm going to break down my point breakdowns into multiple entries. Be on the look out for new entries, and thanks for entering the contest!

PS: Dear winners, prizes were shipped out today and should be coming to a mailbox near you soon enough.

I really did mess up on those limbs, didn't I? I've been striving to improve on my limbs for some time now, but I guess I'll have to keep pushing on that.

I'm touched that you felt it deserved a prize though.
