I doubt it would be a fad. Not everyone knows everything about Seinfeld, and there aren't too many characters witha dominant role.

Also, I doubt anyone would name themselves "Newman"

Actually, that would be a perfect name. Or, better: Yev Kassem (AKA "The Soup Nazi"). Anyway, there are actually a lot of characters that may be worth naming oneself after. Here's a list.
