Thoughts on The Force Awakens (Spoilers Within)

Toa Smoke Monster

I finally got to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens yesterday. I can now move freely throughout the Internet without worrying about accidentally spoiling something from the movie for me. :P

Spoilers follow:

The Force Awakens was a really, really, good movie. Everything about it, from the music to action scenes to the character development scenes, screams Star Wars. The blend of practical effects and special effects was good too. Though there was more CGI creatures in it than I would there would be, but I guess that is to be expected these days, even in the new Star Wars. But having BB-8 actually be there and not CGI was great. It was a great addition to the cast and had a lot of cool moments in the movie.

Speaking of the cast, Rey and Fin were both great characters. I loved both of their personalities and I can't wait to see their stories continue in future Star Wars movies. It was also great seeing Han Solo and Chewbacca again. I'm glad they had as big a role in the story as they did.

Another thing I liked about the movie was that it didn't completely ignore the prequel movies. Rylo Ken makes a comment about how the First Order is using regular people instead of Clones for their Stormtroopers. (Which explains how Fin can be Stormtrooper) The Sith also get mentioned too, even if its just an offhand comment. I know a lot of people didn't like the prequel movies, and I understand why that is. But I'm glad The Force Awakens isn't ignoring them completely.

My only complaint I have about this movie is that it borrows too much from A New Hope. One could make a decent argument that The Force Awakens is somewhat of a remake of A New Hope with some story changes IMO. The two do have a lot of similarities. A Droid (BB-8) getting lost on a desert planet with important info for the Resistance, like R2 from Episode 4. Rey starting out on a desert planet but ending up becoming very important to the story later on, like Luke in Episode 4. The First Order has a super weapon that can blow up planets, just like the Death Star from Episode 4. (Though on that last one, Han does make a comment about it being just a bigger Death Star. Which is sort of true)

That is not to say that the movie doesn't have new material. It does have the new characters, plus other things. And they are the best parts about the movie. But a lot of the story still feels very similar to A New Hope. Even the prequels, as bad as they were, at least told original stories. I just hope that the next Star Wars movie does the same.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie a lot and I recommend it to all Star Wars fans. I'm definitely going to see it again in the theaters, and the only other movie that I can say that I wanted to see more than once in theaters this year is Avengers: Age of Ultron. It's a good movie that is worth it to see. B-)

I went in bitter, assuming it to be nothing more than an ANH remake. I still feel the plot wasn't that original, but I ended up liking it a lot.

The lightsaber fights really stood out for me, it wasn't lame like the OT or super-perfect like the prequels. The characters struggled to fight. They messed up at times. It was great to see.

I was also very happy with how they left Ren and Phasma's fates ambiguous, leaving them the option to go either way with them. Speaking of that, Phasma was way way way underused.

Han's death was also well done. Throughout the OT, he talked his way out of everything. He would come on screen and whether you knew his character or not, you would just know he wasn't going to die. That's why it worked for me when he died: you finally realize that he can't make it out of everything.

On that note, I do feel that this film wouldn't be quite as good if you hadn't seen the others. It seemed that it leaned on the OT a bit too much, especially with Han and Chewie.

It's still pretty great, though.
