  1. Intro It's still Thursday as I'm writing this, but Friday is going to be super-busy so I'm starting early. Don't expect much this week. Updates If you preordered the game, LEGO Universe is live right now! Everyone else still has to wait a bit. Personally I've barely had enough time these past few months to play Xbox, let alone an MMO, so I'm passing for the time being. I hope it does well though! You might have noticed that LEGO.com got overhauled earlier this week. It's a brand new design that looks like loads of fun. I look forward to seeing what they do with it. Speaking of LEGO (oh wait, that's what this entire site is about), Steve Witt has asked you all a question. You really should let him know the answer. So far, I think McSmeag's idea is the best, and I'm sure Steve will go for it. Ancient Greek and/or Romans seems like a popular second choice though. It'll be a close race. Please note, I'll be passing along all of the ideas, but that doesn't mean any of them will actually be acted on. So fair warning to you all. On the BZPower front, we recently had an internal revamp in the way we deal with advertising reports. On the outside, the process is still the same: send a PM to AdvertAlert. Behind the scenes, we're trying to make the processing of such reports more timely and efficient. You can expect a wider scale announcement of this once we work out all the kinks. But for now - it's just a secret between me and you (yes, I know there's only one person that actually reads this )! Mailbag No questions this week. I feel so unloved. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion On to Friday! Leave feedback and send in questions. Have a good weekend everyone!
  2. Intro Welcome back, one and all, to another fun-filled installment of our weekly update! Well, 'fun-filled' might be stretching it. Updates BBCC #60 started up last week. I think the theme is amazing - I wonder where they got such an awesome idea. Also you should build something! Just not a horseshoe crab, please. A lot of 'Brick Events' have been announced for 2011 and beyond. I personally hope to attend BrickFest and BrickFair. If you're looking for events with a large BZPower presence, BrickFair should definitely be on the top of your list, followed by BrickCon, then BrickFest. They're all lots of fun though, so go to whichever you can! The next phase of the Bricktober event starts on Sunday. I tried to go to my local TRU on Tuesday to snag a magnet, but they were already out. If you want to collect these guys, I suggest going early on Sunday. BrickCon was last weekend, and the coverage is starting to trickle in. Check out the trophies and award-winning MOCs from the event. It looks like it was a pretty great time. If you haven't tried for a spot in our Member Interviews yet, you probably should. Cycle Thirty is going to be the last one we do for the time being. Like I said there, the logistics have not been fun, even though the actual interviews are great. We're going to reevaluate the system and maybe bring it back in some form in the future. We'll see. Mailbag 1. No. 2. No idea what that is, so no. 3. The hero sets are kind of boring, but I think the larger ones aren't bad. I look forward to see what 2011 brings. 4. Teridax. 5. There's always room for more. 1) Nope. 2a) Oh man... I kind of like Karkat is his own way. 2b) So hard to choose... I guess Jade. 2c) The Black Queen/Snowman. 3) No. 4) Yes, years and years ago. The US Air Force Museum is awesome, let me tell you. 5) Of course! 6) No. 7) I never saw Spiderman 2 or 3. 8) 'Incence'n'Peppermints' was cute, despite the spelling restrictions. 9) Yes, can't say I'm a huge fan though. 10) Sure? 11) Watching football. 12a) Giving back to the community through contests, giveaways, and new features. 12b) Having to ban people. -1. Null pointer exception? 0. I think that's German? 1. 'Cool File, Bro.' 2. Hardest one that I've gotten? Probably, 'Your Heresy Will Stay Your Feet.' Hardest in the game? 'A Monument To All Your Sins.' 3. No, usually I die shortly after I actually get a kill. 4. Warrant Officer. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Ok, weekly update is done, weekend can begin. Hopefully most of you in the US get Monday off, so enjoy your three day weekend!
  3. Intro Man, weekends are so great. I can relax, be a little bit productive, and write Weekly Updates! Guess which part of that I'm on right now. Updates Don't post or discuss leaked images. 'Nuff said. Jason went off and reviewed Xplode, one of the larger Hero Factory sets. Go see what he thought of it. Speaking of Jason, he's off right now having a lot of fun at BrickCon, and you could be too. I'm sure it'll be a fun weekend. Since it's now October, we of course recently released a new BZPowercast episode! Listen to us talk and rant and rave. Plus, Taped Headphones is awesome! (I may be their biggest fan.) But hey, back to that BrickCon thing - they're announcing a new set over there. 10217 Diagon Alley looks amazing, and I'm not even a Harry Potter fan. I think that's about everything this week... Oh yeah, if you buy a Premier Membership and you're waiting for a while and don't get it (a while being a week or more), send me a PM and I'll work with you to resolve it. Mailbag 1. Other than my own? I'm kind of a fan of all the MSPA names going around right now. 2. I can't see member's passwords. 3. What are you talking about? Look at my display name history. 4. Global Moderator - it was a lot easier than being an admin. 5. Sorry, who? 6. No, that group did not exist at the time. 7. Water. 8. Milk. 9. Flavored water tends to be kind of gross and sugary. 10. Tough call between MSPA and QC. 11. No. 12. Low 70's partly cloudy. Maybe a little breeze. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Have a good weekend everyone. Enjoy the wonderful fall weather! (If that's your thing.)
  4. Intro Welcome back, one and all, to this week's wonderful update. In the spirit of mixing things up I think we're going to have a little chat tonight. Updates So Gatanui continued to provide information about the Hero Factory TV series as it aired in Germany. I have more that I need to post, but it's been a busy week. We also had another set review, courtesy of ChocolateFrogs. Those Atlantis sets sure seem to be pretty popular. The there was that new chapter of Yesterday Quest, with it's interesting revelations at the beginning about Psionics. And that brings us to our chat. Sexism is bad. Just like racism, elitism, and all those other things that hamper our society. Still though, most of us are guilty of them at some point. It's the better people who realize this and strive to avoid repeating the same mistakes. We can never be perfect, but we can do our best. That said, I personally think it is a bad idea to even bring up gender stereotypes when you're writing for kids, even if you claim your intent is to break them. Just portray women and men for who they are: individuals that can make their own choices and have the power to do what they think is best, not what society tells them is right or proper. That is setting a good example for your readers. It's not confusing them and opening the possibility that you may be misinterpreted. Be sure to remember that kids, especially younger ones, might miss certain subtleties in the story - they might look at only what is on the surface. This goes for race, status, sexual orientation, whatever the topic may be. Forget about what society has done in the past, and encourage and shape what society should be - a place where such stereotypes don't even exist. Of course there are always exceptions, period pieces and the like, but if you're creating a fictional universe for children there are certainly things that I think are worth leaving out, like some of the worst parts of society. Also, don't get me wrong, I don't think these subjects should be ignored, but they should be discussed in the proper context. I don't claim to know the perfect way to do that, I'm an engineer, not an educator, but I think I can spot a wrong way when I see it. The discussions raging on our forums prove just how big of an issue this really is, and how these stereotypes still exist and are still perpetuated, and how certain instances can just reinforce it - not to mention bring out the worst in people. It sickens me to see people defend these stereotypes so vehemently in some cases. I had really hoped we had moved beyond that, but I guess I was mistaken. So, the moral I suppose is that stereotypes are bad, sexism and racism, et. al. are worse, and bringing them into the spotlight in the storyline for a kids toy is never a good idea and can never end well. Mailbag 1) The Doctor and his companion try to go to one time, but end up somewhere and somewhen else. Something weird is going on and the must get to the bottom of it. Awesomeness ensues. 2) They are so cool. 3) Incineration it great no matter how its done. 1: It's awesome to be told how awesome the site you run is. 2: It's like children, you can't pick your favorite. (Definitely not RPG. ) 3: See above. (There's no way it would be Comics. ) 4: Sometimes it's time for a change. To something old. 5: I always like the ones the BZP staff starts. 6: They're too busy having fun on BZPower or in real life? I appreciate your dedication though. 7: I've seen you around a bit. 8: If I was asked, maybe. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion I hope you enjoyed that. It felt good to get it off my chest. Have a good weekend everybody. See you all next week!
  5. Intro Sorry guys, no guest updaters this time around - it's just me, you, and the Weekly Update! Updates Umm... I got nothing... Wait! McSmeag reviewed Meltdown, and it was fun! We're slowly getting through those Hero Factory sets. I don't know that well have any reviews this weekend, but soon I hope. We also had another member creation spotlight on the front page, Toa Cehk's Final Ownage. Be sure to check it out, and watch for more member creations - yours could be next! So, what else... Yeah, I think that's about it for now. Plans are losing some momentum due to communication delays, but rest assured we are still pushing forward with some things that may be considered 'big changes.' Mailbag 1. Of course! 2. Deep Space 9. 3. That is very difficult... There's so many good ones. If I had to pick a few, they would be "Blink," "Human Nature/The Family of Blood," and "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead." Oh and "The Lodger"! I'm sure I'm forgetting others though. 4. Doctor Who (but I do watch Warehouse 13 as well). 5. 42 6. Pi 7. Over 9000 8. Eleventy one 9. Infinity 10. Undefined 11. 1337 12. Mac OS X. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Sorry about the lackluster update. Between work and Reach and other even more wonderful things it's been a long, busy week. But until next time!
  6. Intro Man, so what even happened this week? I don't even know, so I think I'm going to let some other people talk for a change instead. (Like Keanu, who is here and says HI!) Hey guys. This is totes DeeVee and Nukaya Cloud Fire. We are totes tag-teaming this entry for Mandrew. Why? Because we have the touch! We have the poweeeerr! Updates First things first, there's this awesome topic you should post in. Don't look at me like that. Gatanui did a review of Hero Factory's TV series, episode one! In the first episode, Anakin's all "Hey, I'm ten or something, look at me drive this podracer! Imma gonna be a Jedi someday! Hoor-wait, who's this clearly older and out of the proper age range queen I'm going to marry??" And then Harry's all, "I'm a wizard? And I'm going to wizarding school? That's crazytalk! My parents died in a car crash", so Hagrid's all "CAR CRASH! How could a car crash kill Lily an' James Potter? It's an outrage! A scandal!" And then Peter Parker gets bit by a radioactive pony, and with great powers comes great responsibilit-HAY. Anyways, it's a really interesting review, so go check it out! In other news, the person of some place did something and something happened and oh look LEGO and kitties and PONIESSS. On top of that, there were a bunch of promotions this week. Which is cool. Fresh meat is always tender, delicate, and oh so tasty. I usually dice it, and gently roast it, before letting it soak in a delicious concoction that is too awesome to describe. I am grateful to have Aaron added to my minion staff. He will be a good one. Though Nukaya is still my favourite. The rest of you, get to work! Also: KEANU REEVES. I'M BATMAN. No, I'm Batman. RACHEL RAY. RACHEL RAY IS BATMAN. No, I'm Batman! COOKING WITH RACHEL RAYBATMAN. I am okay with this? RAYRAYRAYRAYRAYRAYRAYRAY. BATMAN. Ray -is- Christian Bale. I can't believe I forgot this! Mailbag 1. Trolls are pretty cool, especially kid trolls trying to save the world. (This doesn't make sense??) 2. No. 3. No. (Or maybe he does, and doesn't want to say??) 4. Maybe when the big change happens. (Oh man. Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes....) 5. Nah, I like my name. (I like you ) 1. Sure. 2. Pat and Maddison are pretty cool. 3. I love both!!1!!11! (Awwwwwwwwww.) 4. The Fox and the Hound! It is a great movie that offers a fascinating treatise on the nature of friendships, especially as seen through the eyes of those who are 'natural enemies' and set to oppose one another by every force in the world. Of course, as it is wont to do, love through friendship and understanding shines through, through the youngest generation, allowing for a change of heart in even the most gruff and stuck in the mud old fogies! Also, I weep manly tears of manliness when the voiceover at the very end says "And we'll always be friends forever, won't we." "Yeah, forever." (OHMIGOD ME TOO! And they are MANLY tears of MANLINESS!) (It's SADORABLE.) 5. Why yes, I am a handsome devil, who is always fighting off the ladies, none of whom I am interested in, because it is obvious they are only attracted to my physically robust, gruff, yet clearly sensitive outer exterior! I would prefer a woman who is intelligent, and sees me for myself, so I wait until that perfect moment she strikes, like a Cobra! A Cobra of love! (COBRA COMMANDER) Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. (or send it via snail mail or owl post. He's not picky) Conclusion I'm really afraid of what you just had to read (wait, what why?), but hopefully it wasn't too scarring (KITTIES. AND THOMAS O'MALLEY THE ALLEY CAT). See you all next week! Also, remember kids when left alone for 5-10 hours, finches will begin to resemble Oliver Sacks! Have a nice day!
  7. Intro Man, it's been a crazy week trying to juggle all of my priorities, but I think my true colors have finally been revealed. Man, there's about thirty other people who would probably find that statement hilarious, but none of them are here. So instead, a Weekly Update! Updates I should call this week the week of Pat, because he's been on a roll. He tore through a Corroder review earlier in the week, once again showing off his fantastic photography skills. Then he showed up in the most recent episode of the BZPowercast, where he, Smeag, Hahli Husky, Nukaya, Janus, and I talked about how awesome BrickFair was. And then Smeag and Becca sang. But you see, the Powercast was not enough for Pat, because he had to go throw this retrospective together, showing again how much fun we had at BrickFair. I think I should rename this the Pat appreciation topic, since the dues is awesome. For those of you not interested in hearing what Pat and the rest of us have to say might like an update on other matters. Unfortunately, things have deadlocked a bit in our internal discussions, and we're awaiting some replies from a third party as we plan out our changes. It always frustrates me, but I guess some people need vacations. Me, I just go to LEGO conventions. Mailbag 1. That is a closely guarded secret. 2. They're pretty hilarious. 3. I prefer the 'Shift' key. 4. I think it's blasphemous. 6. Probably the former. 7. Only if you don't value your life. 8. Probably something like 85:15. 8.5 maybe. I'd rate myself higher, but there are some really hardcore people out there. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion For those of you in the US, enjoy your Labor Day weekend, hopefully you're off on Monday. Comments and feedback are always appreciated. Take care now!
  8. Intro I am back again, no big stories this week, but I'm going to try to make things more interesting, since that definitely seemed to interest everyone a lot more. Updates The BrickFair coverage has begun! (Slow though it may be.) If you haven't already you MUST watch the Safari. Nukaya was amazing, and of course cameraman Pat was rock solid. We also started posting some pics (of Space and Castle stuff) - hopefully we'll have more soon. In some of the pics floating around from the event you might see some cool shirts that were made by Bionicle Raptor (Waffles' tribe was wearing them in the Safari), you can pick one up if you have some cash! I highly recommend it. BrickFair may be over, but BrickCon is coming! It won't have nearly as many BZPower people there, but I'm sure it will still be fun. If you're on the West Coast and want to go to an event and meet a bunch of BZPers, you may be better off holding out for BrickFest in Portland, OR next year. That's the rumor I hear at least. Sisen also reviewed another set. His pictures have been improving a lot since he first started, he really does a great job! So, as a prime example of persistence paying off, I made this announcement tonight. Don't worry, this wasn't any of the big projects we had going on, it was just something that came up when a certain staff member really wanted to change his name and wouldn't stop bugging me about it. I knew there were other staff who had expressed interest in doing the same, so discussions were had, guidelines were drafted, and the policy was put into place. You won't see me changing my name anytime soon, but I hope other staffers can make good use of it (at the time of this writing, two already have). Now, this doesn't mean that if you want something changed on BZPower all you have to do is bug me about it. Oh no. There has to be a legitimate reason, and then you have to convince me that any amount of work that has to go into it is worth the end result. At the end of the day, changing a name doesn't take a lot of effort, and it serves the purpose of keeping the staff happy (and believe me, you don't want to see them when they're angry), so I went for it. There, now you have some insight into how rules and policies are made. Yay! Mailbag 1. Yes. 2. In a league? Not for a long time. I do enjoy the occasional game of volleyball or soccer though. 3. No, but it's funny you mentioned that, because I was talking to some people about it the other day. 4. See above. 5. Farscape. As far as currently on-air ones, probably Doctor Who. 6. Any reality show. 7. Of course I do. The classic shot: Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Weekends are awesome - I hope you enjoy yours. Questions and comments are awesome too. See you all next week.
  9. Intro Yay, the weekend is here once again. That means so much more when you're a working stiff. I think I'm going to try something different this week. Updates So, I have a story for you all, hope you like. Many years ago, almost a decade, in fact, a pretty cool guy who used to really love LEGO discovered Bionicle, and thought it was cool enough that he should make a community site for it. A year later, it merged with a big Bionicle news site, and BZPower was born. During that first year, we hopped servers and changed domains and even changed our forum software. Custom addons and tweaks were made, such as Proto, spinnies, spoilers, and a plethora of other things. Even after that, there were many changes as the site grew. And then we grew. And grew. And grew. So now here's where things get interesting. Every member, post, topic, PM, blog entry, etc, on BZP was put into a database. For the uninformed, think of it as a huge Excel spreadsheet, but way more advanced than that, and way bigger too. Imagine putting forty-five thousand members (and all their information), two hundred and seventy thousand topics, almost six million posts, and sixteen hundred blogs with over eighty thousand entries and four hundred thousand comments in an Excel spreadsheet. Now imagine trying to open it. It would probably take a while. Every time you try to load the forums or the blogs, BZPower's server has to access this database to find what you're looking for. Now, thanks to the wonders of Computer Science, it doesn't have to search linearly (one at a time) through those millions of entries, but it can still take a while. At peak usage, when lots of people are trying to access it, this can cause things to slow down. What can also happen is that when lots of posts are made, the server isn't able to put them in a way that makes them easy to access, or that while it's doing so, something interrupts the process. This can cause corruption and potentially loss of data, though not usually. Corruption can prevent portions of the database from being accessed though, which can cause the forums to not load. But I digress. So all that stuff was put into a database and it got really really big as the site got really really popular. The site's popularity became its curse, and caused it to get slow and cranky. This made the members cranky too. That guy who originally made the site hang around, and made some friends who helped him keep it going. Unfortunately, they practically lived in three different corners of the country and all had lives that they wanted to live in addition to running the site. This meant that when they wanted to change things, they all had to find time to discuss it, come to and agreement, and then move forward and actually do it. For some things, it wasn't too bad, but for other things, like a very big database, there were a lot of options to discuss and a lot of things to take into account. And the server wasn't even the biggest problem on their radar. Despite this, they thought and brainstormed and had an idea for making things better. It was possibly the most ambitious change to the site since the merger that created BZPower. It took a long time plan out, and even longer to implement. So long that it's still going on. But the plan is there, and it is very sound. I warn you though, there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth. There always is. Sometimes change is bad, but most times I think, change is for the best. That's what evolution is all about - if we don't change we don't survive. BZPower is no different. I hope you all enjoyed that. Mailbag 1. To the forum? No. 2. In so many ways. In our size, our membership, our coverage. I think perhaps our overall philosophy is about the only thing that's changed. 3. Not sure what you really mean by that. 4. I built some parts for the BrickFair Mosaic project, but aside from that I haven't built any original creations in a few years. 5. Maryland. 6. Depends if I'm on the giving or receiving side. 7. I look forward to it, as long as it's not empty. 8. Of course! 9. It's a great show - I love it. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Comments, thoughts, questions, etc - leave them down below. Have a great weekend everyone, I think I shall.
  10. Intro BrickFair! Updates Come talk to me at BrickFair. Mailbag Questions are lacking. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion G'nite.
  11. Intro After last week's brief update I thought maybe I should give you guys an actual update. (Although the minimalist thing seemed to go over well.) Updates So, BrickFair was already like a week away, and everyone who was there is now sad that it's over. We're all still very tired too, and are slowly going through our pictures. Thanks to this thing called a job, I've yet to sort any of my 939 pictures yet, let alone do any editing. This weekend, I hope. We did get some coverage up, however: go check out The Bionicle Mosaic Project, lovingly brought to you by Nukaya and ChocolateFrogs. They both did so much work organizing this, that they really deserve a big pat on the back. I hope we do this again in the future, because I had a lot of fun helping out and the final products were amazing to look at! Maddison and Benjamin - you guys rock! Anyway, look for more BrickFair coverage throughout the month sometime. While the above event was going on, Emzee was in Austin, Texas at a LEGO Store Grand Opening. While we missed him not being at BrickFair, at least he had some LEGO in his weekend! The fun doesn't stop though, because Star Wars Celebration V is going on right now, and LEGO is there in Force (get it, 'Force'?)! Steve Witt can't catch a break, but that's ok, because he's awesome and can handle it. Speaking of Steve Witt, we made him an honorary staff member! Steve is a huge part of the LEGO online community and, as such, BZPower, so it's only fair that we show him the respect and honor he deserves for all the hard work he does. We love you Steve! Digressing back to other LEGO events, there's a cool exhibit going on right now in the National Building Museum in Washington DC. I wish we had had time to check it out during BrickFair, but it was a little far away and our schedule was already so packed. Today the Winter Village Bakery was announced. It looks like a great little set with a lot of awesome little details. Finally, you should go click this link and go vote for what LEGO pieces you'd like to see in certain colors. Your voice counts, honest! Mailbag +--> QUOTE(Ardros can draw octagon )Hello there! I have some mailbag questions for you: 1. What is your opinion on the show Sesame Street? 2. If you were a cheese steak, what would you do? 3. Are you Black Six? 4. Are you sure? 5. What if I informed you that you were actually the founder of Gatorade? 6. NOW are you so sure? 7. Do you wish that you had just burned this PM when it arrived? 8. Are you ever going to open another PM from me? (If I send one, that is) 9. Last question! Do you prefer octagons or Firax? 1. Jim Henson was awesome, and the show at one point had a lot of educational value. I haven't seen it in well over a decade though, so I can't comment on its current status. 2. I would taste delicious. 3. Yes. 4. 100% sure. 5. I would know you to be lying. 6. Yes. 7. How can I burn bits? 8. Probably. 9. Octagons are geometric and pretty. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion It's almost time to finally catch up on some sleep, then more unpacking and getting settled in from vacation this weekend. Hopefully productive things will be done. See you all around - feel free to leave comments and such, as always.
  12. Intro This is unfortunately posted a bit late, thanks to some server difficulties going on last night, but I don't think that makes it any less of a Weekly Update - honest! Updates Aside from our amazing anniversary celebrations, it's been a pretty slow week, but that's ok because BrickFair is right around the corner! I'm hoping we have something super-fun to announce this weekend or early next week. We also had our first member creation spotlight. Wasn't it great? Look for more soon! Our latest episode of the BZPowercast went up too. We got it posted during the anniversary week (the first time it wasn't done on the last day of the month). I hope you all give it a listen and enjoy! Some Hero Factory stuff has been poking its head out. First, there was the comic (with awesome cover art by Carlos D'Anda!). Then, some images from some kind of TV series that's coming out, and then a new game (which has since been removed). LEGO needs to hide their URLs better if they don't want BZPower members to find things. It's good to see that there's a bit of marketing might behind the line though. Mailbag 1. Contingencies are always good. 2. Yes, but I can't talk about those. 3. Having it load instead of getting a board message. 4. I am a fan of Natalie Portman. Summer Glau has a lot going for her too. 5. Up. 6. Fear. 7. I'm currently reading The Once and Future King. 8. Reading, coincidentally enough. 9. Spammers, hackers, board messages, people not turning on their headlights when they should, and people who drive 10 m.p.h. below the speed limit. 10. No. 11. That was so long ago, I'm not sure. I think it was either something by Harry Chapin or Weird Al's 'Running With Scissors.' 12. No. 13. It usually alternated between me being smart or me not applying myself (because things were so easy back in elementary and middle school). 14. Neil Armstrong. 15. Would I tell you if I did? 16. I've started many collections over the years, but usually stop after a bit. I do have a lot of books though, so I suppose you could say I collect those. 17. My own bed. 18. There was a cell phone case I bought once that broke within a week of getting it - that was pretty horrible. 19. I don't drink coffee. 20. Lots of gaming and maybe a good party. 21. A 2001 Subaru Forester. 22. I'm too embarrassed to say. 23. I don't really have any cooking skills; I can make a decent omelette though. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Ok guys, the server isn't going to fix itself - back to the grindstone. Have a good weekend!
  13. Intro It's a late update this week, but that's because I've been so busy with BZPower stuff! Updates So I heard it's like, our anniversary or something. Nine years is crazy, right? It boggles my mind to think that our site has been going on and thriving for this long - our members really are amazing, even though they whine and complain a bit. We wouldn't be here without you! We like to try to celebrate things in as big a way as possible on our anniversary. Of course that means Premier perks! This year, it also means a giveaway of Cryoshell CDs that aren't available in the US (or most countries) - and they're signed even! It also means we're changing the way that we're doing reporting on BZPower. I'm hoping for some positive feedback, but I'm sure someone will find something they don't like. I'm also hoping the next episode of the BZPowercast will be up before the Anniversary week is over. We also had another even larger project that we were working on, but it didn't quite pan out. I think it's too big to wait until next year though, so hopefully later this year you'll see some bigger changes on BZPower. On the Bionicle front, a new serial started up on BionicleStory.com. I'm glad to see things are still progressing there. In other news, Toa_Velox submitted his first review, Hero Factory set Preston Stormer. For a change, I don't think there will be a review this weekend, at least not from me. The San Diego Comic-Con is going on now, and LEGO has been there in a big way. I'm just going to list all of our coverage: Event OverviewStar Wars Cube DudesObi-Wan's Starfighter Revealed I wish someone from the staff could have made it there, but it was not meant to be. Maybe next time! I think that's about all I've got (wasn't that enough?). Mailbag No questions this week. Everyone must be too busy blogging. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion I hope everyone is enjoying the anniversary, I know it's a lot of effort for some of us to get things to go as smooth as possible. Have a good weekend everyone, and keep enjoying BZPower!
  14. Intro It's the weekend again! Someone should count how many of these I've done, so I can know if it's enough that I can stop now. Anyway, on with the update! Updates After I posted my update last week, a new serial debuted. I think Yesterday Quest stirred up a bit of controversy but also brought a bunch of new facts to life, for better or worse. On the Hero Factory side, a new promo video was posted this week too. At about the same time, the sets themselves appeared on LEGO Shop@Home. You can expect some more Hero Factory news tonight or this weekend, and hopefully another review too! Speaking of reviews, we had one last weekend! Sisen took a look at the Seabed Scavenger, one of the Atlantis sets from this year. It seems to be a pretty popular theme - I hope to see it continue for a couple more years. Lastly, BrickFair keeps getting closer! Send your MOCs and artwork in! I just got some cool stuff today that I might be giving away at the event (only if you're there, because shipping it will be a pain), so if you can attend, make sure you do! We have other stuff we're planning too, just to make it worth your while. I lied about the 'lastly' thing, there's more to talk about! Our anniversary is coming up way too fast - next Tuesday! There's a lot of stuff that's been in the works, but I don't think we're going to be able to roll it all out in time. There will be stuff going on though, don't worry! In fun awesome news, I got to meet Toaraga today - man that guys is awesome! Don't let anyone tell you differently! I'm also going to be hanging out with Smeag this weekend! It's like a BrickFair preview event! Except the BZP-related stuff we do will probably be more about the Anniversary than BrickFair! And I like using exclamation points! Mailbag 1) I didn't read it. 2) I've only read bits and pieces - they never appealed to me that much. 3) By volume - Frosted Flakes, by taste, I've been enjoying Special K Red Berry. 4) 1. It's been crazy at times, and there's still some unpacking and arranging to be done, but overall it hasn't been too bad. 2. It's hotter, but hopefully that means the winters won't be as bad. I'm still getting adjusted to being in the South. 3. What theme? 4. Yes, actually. I'm working on a couple panels for the mosaic project. Just need a few more bricks and they'll be done! Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion That wraps it up for this week's update. Have a good weekend - stay cool, it's hot out there. Questions, comments, and such are always welcome. See you 'round!
  15. Intro Back again for another week. I guess that means you should be updated. Do people actually like these, or is it just a wasted exercise? Let me know in the comments. Updates We had another wonderful Hero Factory review last weekend, courtesy of Darth Vader. These sets don't seem to be all that bad. You can expect another review this weekend, though it won't be Hero Factory. We will be reviewing more of those sets though, so keep your eyes peeled. There's been a bunch of Hero Factory web content recently, including a podcast and a video promo. Doesn't seem to be quite as all-out as 2001 was for Bionicle, but it's a pretty decent campaign. On the BZPower front, be sure to check out the 2010 Library Summer Olympics Lots of fun events, and prizes to be won! Back to LEGo stuff, check out their latest survey. I found the results from the last one interesting - you guys really got your voices heard. Wasn't that so much better and easier than petitions and sending LEGO email or boycotting or what have you? They know we exist, and they did even before the survey. What they're going to do about it remains to be seen. Outside of BZPower, things have been very busy so as to keep me from doing much on the site. We're getting ready for the anniversary though, don't worry! Mailbag 1) Of course, it was awesome. 2) I'm planning on getting one with the Kinect this Fall. 3) No, Android and iOS are pretty much the top contenders in my opinion. 4) I downloaded Portal for Mac, haven't played it yet (I've played Portal before, just not on my Mac yet). 5) Probably Ben 10. 6) Google. 7) Nope - most of my LEGO is still in storage. 1. Sometimes it's just time for a change. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion And with that I leave you guys for the weekend. Have a good one, and enjoy the sun and summer while it's here!
  16. Intro This is the first Weekly Update of the rest of your life, also, the first one from my new place. But that's the topic of another entry. You guys are here for BZPower stuff, I'm sure. Updates And there's not much. It's a holiday weekend and all, and we're busy. The BBC Contest deadline has been extended until July 10th, and we've announced some pretty awesome (and appropriate) prizes for it. Huge thanks to Cryoshell, the team at Advance, and Kelly for hooking us up. Don't you want to build something? Our newest episode of the BZPowercast went up this week too. You can listen to us ramble on and on and on (and on!) about a variety of different topics. Next year should hopefully be a super-awesome show. If not, the one after that will hopefully be recorded at BrickFair and be equally awesome. I'm hoping for a review this weekend. No guarantees though. Other than that, there's not much to say. We're working on stuff, but it's slow going. Lots of planning for BrickFair though - you don't want to miss it if you can come. If you can't - send stuff in! Mailbag 1. Most definitely false. The last Pokemon game I played didn't even have Mudkips. 2. It definitely has its perks. 3. The what? 4. Play the game everybody play the game of love. 5. It's a great album. 6. I think not. 7. No. 8. Did you ever have it? 9. No. 10. .oOo.oOo.oOo..... 1) Thousands to tens of thousands of dollars, potentially. 2) I can't think of any offhand. 3) Not really, board messages are much rarer these days than they have been in the past. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Lots of unpacking and organizing for me to, so I'm gonna get going. Have a good weekend everyone!
  17. Intro It is summer at long last. That means summer break for all you kids and lots of nice, warm weather. It doesn't mean a stop for the Weekly Updates either! Updates To start things off, recently there have been a couple instances of members' accounts being compromised and used to spread inappropriate messages. If you see the forums go offline, or receive a notice that you have a new PM that suddenly disappears, this is probably the reason. We're constantly looking for ways to improve the site, both in terms of features and security. The Administration and Staff of BZPower appreciates your patience and cooperation while we strive to make BZP a better place. On to happier things - we got to announce a new set last weekend, the Imperial Shuttle. This looks like a very impressive set and I hope I have some room to display it if I manage to pick it up this fall. More on the 'hey, that's not Bionicle,' front - Smeagol4 posted the first Hero Factory set review. Jimi Stringer was the perfect choice for Smeag, and I'm glad to see the overall positive reaction. Continuing the Hero Factory trend (hint: you can expect more and more of it), the Hero Factory website launched. BZPower's very own Binkmeister did a great job, and there's a lot of interesting content up there that really expands the line, not quite to the level of Bionicle, but more than most LEGO themes. Obviously if the website is up and we're reviewing the sets, Hero Factory is available in stores and online If you've been looking forward to these sets, for the characters or the parts, start checking your local stores. You should also check out the LEGO Design Challenge - your LEGO creation could be featured on the cover of the LEGO Catalog. I look forward to seeing the winners' creations, whether they're from BZPower or not. BrickFair is quickly approaching, if you're attending or want to send stuff in, be sure to check out our recent summary of BZPower's involvement. We have a couple other ideas up our sleeves that we hope to do as well. And all hope is not lost, for there is some Bionicle news this week. A new chapter of Sahmad's Tale went up for your listening pleasure. Bionicle is not dead yet! Mailbag 1. I think it's a bit uncalled for. The theme seems perfectly fine, and I don't see why people think it's so similar to the last one. 2. The amoeba. 3. Delicious. I had some the other day, in fact. 4. He's still around - I talk to him fairly frequently about the direction and future of BZPower. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Ok, that's all for this week; it's going to be a busy weekend for me. Have fun guys, and be sure to leave comments and feedback, as well as send in your Mailbag questions!
  18. Intro It is Friday yet again, and, horrible ref calls aside, it's a pretty decent Friday. A perfect Friday, you might say, for an update. Updates Unfortunately, there's not a huge amount to update about, but I'll see what I can do. We had a review last week of a rather small and seemingly-inconsequential set. But we here at BZPower think every set is important, and hope to bring you a wide range of reviews, from large to small. So, like we said when we started reviewing non-Bionicle sets: get used to it. Speaking of non-Bionicle related stuff, the release date for LEGO Universe was announced. Mark your calendars for October 26th, because that's when the online fun starts! For even more Bionicle related news, Hero Factory sets have started to appear in the US. If you're looking to pick these guys up, start checking your local stores. Since I have nothing else for you guys, I give you this abridged chat log: Mailbag 1. There is no real 'easy' way. If you think someone is violating the rules, however, report it. The Global Moderators have an easy way of testing such things. And before you ask, no, it's nothing we can make readily available to members. 2. People need to be taught what a question is. 3. I have once or twice, but not regularly. 4. No. 5. I enjoyed the others, but I feel like I'll wait until the DVD release on this one. 6. I can't say I've heard about that one. 7. Get some decent software and microphones. Then practice. We test recorded a couple episodes before we actually released one for real. 8. No. And I don't want to know how you found that out. 9. Sounds like corporate America. 10. Invisibility. 11. The thought may have crossed our minds. 12. Yes. 13. A Halo ring. 14. I intend to do all the things that I would normally do, thankyouverymuch. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion And that wraps things up for this week. Your mailbag questions and other comments are always welcome. Have a good weekend everyone - enjoy the World Cup!
  19. Intro Welcome back to our update that takes place each week. After last week, it's going to be a bit hard to follow up after those sig guidelines from last week. Updates Lots of BrickFair news this week. Benjamin posted up some BrickFair shipping info for sending your MOCs and artwork to the event. I hope to see a lot of your creations there! In other news, there's been some mosaic news - we need your help with it! We recently discovered word on a new Hero Factory set that's coming out at some point this year. It's likely a store-exclusive, but for what store we do not know. Hopefully we'll hear more soon. On the BZPower front, Kex has returned to the staff! I'm glad to have him back on the team, helping out and spreading the load out across the other Leaders. Not much else to spiel about tonight, maybe next time. Mailbag 1. I'm doing fine. 2. It's picked up a bit, but people need to send me more! 3. Perhaps... 4. 142. 5. Of course! It was excellent! I especially liked the story about Cortana and Gravemind. 6. I played it every single day, and loved (almost) every minute of it. 7. Eh, not my favorite, but I don't hate him. 8. Tahu. 9. Jon is the obvious choice, but there are plenty of interesting characters. 10. Only when it's really, really long. 11. You have no idea. 1) Nothing, except that that someone would be banned. 1a) I'm sensing a pattern here. *Calls the cops.* 2) A database wipe or a new super-expensive server. 3) Possible? Yes. Likely? Not at this time. 4) I own a LG VX8300. 4a) Verizon Wireless. 5) Nope. 6) Back in the day I played a whole lot of Pokemon Blue. 7) Tough pick. Maybe Wolverine or Batman. 7a) Magneto, for sure. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Questions, comments, and mailbags are always appreciated. Have a good weekend folks!
  20. Intro I welcome you once again to this hebdomadal update of mine. Boy do we have things to discuss. Let's get started! Updates As I foresaw last week, we had a set review go up - Jet Ray by Darth Vader. People don't seem to like the Ben 10 sets that much, although Pat does see some MOCing potential in the many new parts that appear in these sets. We also posted a reminder about BrickFair, if you're attending or want to send in MOCs, be sure to read it. As always, it's sure to be a great time. It was a podtastical week as well. We posted our eleventh episode of the BZPowercast, where we discuss more BrickFair, the story, and RPGs. BS01, on the other hand, interviewed Greg Farshtey. Got give them both a listen! Did I mention RPGs? IF you're a fan of those, you should check out our 18th Bionicle RPG Contest. We have a theme this time around, as an added twist. If you think you're up to the challenge, we'd love to see you enter! I think by far the biggest news this week was that we updated our signature and avatar guidelines, which you can check out right here. There's been a very vocal group of people expressing their dislike over the new guidelines, which I suppose we should have expected, but really didn't. I guess after hearing people complain for years about the confusing and restrictive rules, we thought everyone would like the way we opened things up. We should have remembered that you can't please everyone. I've yet to see any comments though that lead us to believe that there is something fundamentally wrong with the new rules - they're definitely a lot more easier to understand and allow members a lot more flexibility. And believe me, we didn't pick 800x300 out of thin air. We tried and discussed other dimensions and looked at existing signatures to make sure that very few, if any, would be breaking the rules after we made the changes. Believe it or not, even with the old rules it wasn't that hard to get close to 300 pixels tall. The only difference now is that before it was text and images and now it can be purely images. So it all comes down to personal taste. If you don't like it, I'm sorry, but I think it'll become less noticeable with time. Mailbag Yes. Yes. Not so much. 1. Right now I'm waiting for paperwork to go through so I can start work. 2. I've never seen an episode of LOST. 3. You can't handle the truth! 4. I try not to dwell in the past. 5. You have no idea. 1. I own an Xbox 360. 2. Not anything recent. 3. Yes, a Subaru Outback. 4. Classic Rock. 5. I'm probably biased towards the Xbox 360. 6. Immensely. 7. I watch pretty much everything on Hulu. 8. I'm a fan of Firefox. 9. Mac OS X all the way. 10. In theaters? Iron Man 2. Seen? The Prestige. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion I hope that cleared things up in a simple and informative manner (like our new sig rules ). Questions and comments are always welcome, of course. Have a good weekend all!
  21. Intro Here we are, two entries in two days, something a cool and something boring and periodic (I'm assuming the boring part since comments seem to be on the decline). Anyway, stand back and prepare to be updated! Updates New set review went up this week. Hopefully another one will appear this weekend. It may even make some people slightly more pleased than some of the previous reviews. I'm not sure why though, that Imperial Flagship is amazing. Not much else has been going on in the world of Bionicle, which is to be expected. Having the set line canceled can do that. We've been working on recording the next episode of the Powercast, which will go up on Monday, in all likelihood. I only have a couple segments recorded so far, but more should be rolling in this weekend. There's been some activity on the sidebar on the right hand side of my blog - woo hoo! I'm hoping for more updates on that next week. I think that's all I've got for now. No new updates. Mailbag Another week of no questions? How disheartening. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion I haven't quite finished with the celebrations of my recent graduation, so if you'll excuse me I'm going to get back to that. Have a great weekend everyone!
  22. Intro The end of the week is here, which means it's time for an update of weekly proportions (that is to say, not very big). Updates For all you story fans out there, the final chapter of Reign of Shadows went up this week. Another chapter closes, but that leaves room for new ones to open! Yay! Well, if you like that sort of thing anyway. In other news, someone discovered the LEGO Multimedia Station on iTunes. I'm trying to find out some more information about it, but nothing yet. So far there's no new content, it's all stuff that's been posted before. I can see where it might evolve into something pretty cool though. I'm hoping to get another set review up this weekend. Not a Bionicle set, of course - can you guess the theme? Work on one of our other projects has stalled a bit, hopefully we can get it up and running again soon. It will be nice when it's done. Mailbag And again with the no questions thing. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Back to Andromeda for a little bit, and then perhaps some work on top-top secret work. Maybe. Sort of. Have a good weekend, regardless.
  23. Intro One of these days, I'm going to take the week off. The question remains: will people be shocked and awed, or will no one really care? Updates Valenti reviewed the TIE Defender, a set which I admire. I look forward to a sale so I can pick it up - personally for $35 I'd buy it. If you're still unconvinced, go back and read the review again. Think of how many X-Wings you could take down in that thing. (The answer is a LOT: I've played TIE Fighter longer than I should admit, I know.) Speaking on other LEGO themes, the Hero Factory teaser site went live this week too. People need to stop hating on Hero Factory so much - yes the story doesn't seem as deep as Bionicle's, but it's still more story than any other non-licensed theme out there. Give it a chance and see if it surprises you. You should also check out this contest. If you have any video editing skills, it's a good chance at getting your name out there and winning some cool stuff in the process. If you're a gamer like me, you might want to consider pre-ordering LEGO Universe. Now that there's going to be a Mac version, I am definitely considering playing it a bit more. I need to see if there's a Mac version of the Beta now so I don't have to keep booting up Windows just to play it. On the BZPower front, check out the BrickFair Mosaic Project! I know I've already volunteered to do a couple pieces, but those are all the baseplates I have lying around, so I'm out of the running for any others. There seems to be a decent amount of interest, so hopefully we can churn out three or four of these bad boys by August. Go help out! Planning is going apace for BrickFair. The staff are trying to keep track of the members who will be there for the entire event, so if you're registered for the full event and think you're cool enough to hang out with the staff , let or someone else know so we can not forget about you. It's going to be an amazing weekend - that is a fact. Other BZPower stuff is plugging along. Maybe we'll be able to announce it sooner and maybe later, but definitely not until after Monday. Mailbag 1. Nope. 2. Getting to help people by keeping the site running. 3. Always. 4. Short questions allow me to answer more thoroughly. 5. I hope so, but can't really comment on the matter. 1. Not a fan. 2. Cake. 3. Paper. 4. What's a bar of cookies? 5. I prefer to call it un-wrong. 6. They can be fun. 7. 23. 6. (Again.) If only we knew. 7. Not right now. They are tasty though. 8. Nope. 9. I can't answer it if it's not a question. 10. Nope. 11. No. 12. I can't remember the last time I bought something from there. 13. Mata Nui. 14. Tails. 15. I don't know any sonic toa. 16. Takanuva. 17. Orion. 18. Tahu. 19. Tahu or Kopaka Mata. 20. Nope. 21. I feel fine. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Whew that was fun! Anyway, I hear Generator Defense is up on the Halo: Reach Beta now. So I'll talk to you all later. Have a good weekend!
  24. Intro I suppose it is that time again. I'll have to tear myself away from the Halo: Reach Beta for a bit to write some things up for you guys. Here we go! Updates It's going to be interesting finding stuff to talk about now. All the major story updates are done and gone, so Bionicle news is going to be hard to come by. You guys are going to have to accept that we're going to be posting more general LEGO stuff on the front page. Such is life. Speaking of which, Jason posted a set review earlier this week, the Toy Story set Wood and Buzz to the Rescue. You may not be a fan of our non-Bionicle reviews, but those are what's out there. I hope to post another review this weekend, since I have some more free time now. Free time means that one of our projects, that we had hoped to announce a while ago but was stalled, has started moving again. We've been working on testing things out to make sure we don't break anything before it happens. I'm sure when it does there's going to be some complaining, but really we think it's for the best and that it will make it easier for us to moderate things and easier for you to follow the rules. After that, it'll be on to an even older project that had fallen by the wayside a while back. I'll love it if/when that can come to fruition. I think that's about all I have for now, I look forward to being able to share some more details. Mailbag After last week, I guess no one wanted to send in another monstrous list. I guess maybe I should start spreading them out so I don't have as many droughts like this. Want to see your questions answered? PM them to me and put 'Mailbag' in the subject line. I'll pick the few I like the best and answer them in the next update. Conclusion Anyway, back to the Beta for me. Enjoy your weekend and leave your questions and comments here, as always.
  25. Intro How did it get to be this late on a Friday already? I'm glad the semester is just about over. But you probably don't care about that. Updates Go check out the latest episode of the BZPowercast! It's nice and short this time. Let us know if you like this or if you prefer longer shows. So Journey's End and the Mata Nui Saga both concluded this week. If you haven;t checked them out yet, you're missing out. I have so many mailbag questions to answer this week that I don't have time to write anymore here, sorry! Mailbag Fairy ninja, I think... 1) -775.4 2) It's people! Soylent Green is people! 3) No. 4) Ha. Ha. Ha. 1. No. 2. Um, no. Sorry? 1. I like Paul better, but I think John was probably a better musician. 2. Two days? Maybe? 3. Burger and milkshake. 4. I'm not sure what that parenthetical statement means? Halo but not the Halo game and Star Wars but not the Star Wars movies? I'd pick the original trilogy over Halo, but as soon as you add other stuff in, Halo might win. 5. I am the eggman. Woo! 1. Puce. 2. It's fairly small and very cluttered. There's a desk with my computer, an entertainment center with my TV and Xbox, a couple of bookcases, a sofa, and chair for my desk. Lots of games and books, and movies, and miscellaneous knickknacks too. 3. I have some mild pet dander allergies. 4. I wish I knew. 5. It's almost tomorrow! 1. I'm Black Six. 2. No, I'm sure. 3. This has been one of those weeks... Hope everyone has a better weekend than me!
