Using DS3 Controller on PC?

Anyone here have any experience using a Dualshock 3 controller on PC with Steam? What's the best course of action?

 

I'm halfway decent with hardware issues, but this is a software issue so my solution of wanting to chuck the controller to the other side of the room probably won't help.

I haven't gotten a DS3 controller to work with Steam, though I use it with various PS1 and N64 emulators. In my experience the best thing to do is to keep it wired. Also make sure buttons are mapped right?

It's a 3rd party wired controller for PS2/3, so that's not an issue. I can get it working in big picture but as soon as I open a game it's like the thing doesn't exist. I've seen some things that are supposed to work but none of them do.
