Les Mis: Should I See It?

Alright, so I'm considering seeing Les Miserables. It's not an issue of money because I got a movie card thing, so I can see it if I want to. But:

1. I have never seen the play.

2. Beyond it taking place in France and the names of some characters, I know nothing about it.

3. I absolutely HATED THE TRAILER. LIKE, worst trailer of all time.

4. And yeah.

So should I see it or no because I feel like I might hate it...

...but this is like, the one movie where hating on it would be sooooo worth it.

:kaukau: Worst trailer of all...What? Dude, I'm not entirely sure what to recommend to you. However, I personally think you should see the play first. It's not a necessity, but you can still look up the Tenth Anniversary concert online. Because you feel like you're going to hate it...I highly suggest you don't go in with those attitudes. Either you like it or you don't. The only in-between are the purists who love the play and can't bear some of the changes.

The voices aren't operatic like they are in the play. The acting, however, is good, and at the very least you'll walk away having seen a movie with a great story and great characters. The musical scores are also great, though they will always be better suited for a stage production than for a movie. There are really no breaks between the songs.

Meanwhile, my perspective is a little different and definitely more appreciative considering that I've read a bit of the book. Understanding some of the things that happen in the book make the musical even better, even though the musical is fairly self-sustaining. Victor Hugo is certainly one of the more compassionate writers of all time who manages to create a very sincere portrait of humanity.

You're not going to hate it, though. You might decide that it's not really your thing. After all, it isn't in 3D, there are no aliens or monsters, and they're singing all the time, along with this being a good old fashion non-high-concept film, so you basically know what you're walking into. It's not necessarily something you can hate upon, but I can see how it's not something some people would fall in love with. It's definitely not superficial, although you might have some arguments with the delivery. You basically have to see it in some form or other at some time or other, though. I've adopted a philosophy that with musicals you have to just walk in and listen to them the whole way through instead of just sitting back and hearing things about the them.

Does that help?

I haven't seen the movie... but why on Earth would you waste a gift card on a movie you are fully expecting to (and it sounds like you want to) hate? Seems like there are better ways to spend two and three quarter hours.

Yeah, none of this makes any sense.

I'd say go see it because it was a good movie. If you enjoy trolling... yourself? Then it seems like you'll appreciate it.

@Kraggh: It does - although I will say I don't generally care for 3D, aliens or monsters as a major point of seeing movies. =P

Singing all the time... well, I think movies these days could use a little more of it.

I will go research the stuff, maybe read a bit of it real quick if I have time (dunno how long it'll be in the cinema where I live, it being a smaller city). Thank you.
