C G I: Speaking Of Overused...

Ah, CGI (Computer-Generated Images) spawned great movies like Toy Story, A Bug's Life, hopefully Cars, and some other ones by Pixar (Toy Story 2 was not so great). Back when movies first started to be full-length CGI, beginning with Toy Story, they were something special to see, something different to behold, and something somewhat or totally unexpected. They're storylines were usually pretty good, and the characters' abilities were just so impressive to see.

But now, especially in the last couple years, there have been more and more CGI movies. Now don't get me wrong: I don't hate these CGI movies (all of them, at any rate), I'm just annoyed that so many companies are now making them: it's just not anything special or different. It doesn't really standout as a must-see movie anymore, simply because it's CGI.

Some of the CGI movies I have seen are not that great: it was probably something just to compensate for an idea/storyline that wasn't so great. In my opinion, Doogal was a terrible movie: there were too many jokes (and incessant dialogue) to really pass for a movie, and I'm a person that usually likes cartoons and comedies. The jokes were either typical or you had to know the movie references... that many movie references shouldn't be needed for the particular movie you're watching anyhow. Having that many comedians doing voice acting was probably not a good idea either: I'm still not sure if I was watching animated stand-up routines or a story about a dog trying to make up for his mistake.

Today I sigh

For CGI -_-

On the same token, I liked Hoodwinked: a different telling to classic fairy tales is almost always a good step. (A pun for a title didn't hurt either.) It wasn't hindered by having four different points of view either; in fact, they actually added onto one another. Even though some of the jokes and gags are predictable, that is expected, as long as they don't overshadow the storytelling; most of what I saw/heard was fresh material anyway. Though most of the characters' mouths seemed bulgy when they talked, that is a movie worth seeing again.

Anyway, I plan on seeing Cars, not simply because it's Pixar, whose movies I actually like: their CGI movies I've seen haven't disappointed me... save for maybe Toy Story 2. (Perhaps certain types of movies just shouldn't have sequels.) Also, the storyline and idea seem different enough, at least: it'll be like a full-length "Chevron with Techron" commercial... but better animated. ^_^

I agree, but I think CGI movies are still some of the best out there. Probably because one can program the 'actors' the way they want to...so we don't end up with less-than-stellar performances that might occur with a live-action film.

True, they can manipulate the characters the way they want, but they don't have that "real" feel to it... there's not the same emotional attachment as it would be to real people. The outtakes that might occur just aren't so natural; that part of Pixar's movies is kind of iffy: in my opinion, the only real outtakes were based on misreadings. If you see something that "happened" to the "actor," it didn't really happen: it appears more forced than funny. It loses that suspense of disbelief that makes movies what they are; still the faux reality of CGI movement can be quite excellent to see. ^_^
