Well, that was easy...

Toa Smoke Monster

So I'm playing the after game of Pokemon Y, and I go to catch Mewtwo, arguably one of the most powerful Pokemon ever. I managed to get its health in the red and paralyze it, so I decide to start trying to catch it. I had 40 Ultra Balls in my bag, all ready to be sacrificed to try to do this. But I also had three regular Pokeballs as well, left overs from my early days on my journey. So just to be funny, I decide to throw one of them instead of an Ultra Ball, just to see what would happen.

I caught it, on the first try.

I knew that catching legendary Pokemon in this game was easier than the previous ones, but I would've thought Mewtwo would've put up more of a fight than that! I really don't know if I should be excited or disappointed that I got it with a Pokeball in this game.

But at least I caught him, so that's something.

Pokéballs are still quite effective even into the endgame. In fact, ever since the games introduced the "critical capture" that randomly makes standard Pokéballs more effective based on the number of Pokémon you've caught, I've pretty much ONLY used standard Pokéballs. As a bonus, buying them in bulk gets you a nice supply of Premier Balls, which I save for shiny Pokémon I encounter.

I wasn't aware of critical capture being a thing in the games. What game introduced this? X and Y, or one of the earlier games?

Regardless, this does make sense for me to catch Mewtwo with a Pokeball, since I have two and half boxes full of Pokemon in my PC.

Crit. Capture was introduced in Black 2/White 2, I think. Or B/W

One of those two.

I could have sworn critical captures were simply random chance, not something that increased over time, though...
