Set Review: 41043 Penguin's Playground

Recommended Posts

The one thing that bothers me about this set is that it's so ambiguous where it's supposed to take place. With many of the LEGO Friends animal packs, it's pretty much more apparent whether the animal is supposed to be a wild animal or a pet. This one has an animal that, by all accounts, should be wild — penguins are not very easy to keep as pets — but it features very obvious man-made amenities like the slide. I guess the most likely answer is that it's a zoo animal.

I sort of wish that the slide were made with more natural icy colors like White or Light Royal Blue (Bricklink's Bright Light Blue) so that it could have been imagined as either a zoo enclosure OR a natural environment. But I suppose the designers wanted to use some brighter colors like Light Purple (Bricklink's Bright Pink) to offset the coldness of the ice and water for aesthetic reasons. Not to mention that treating it strictly as a zoo enclosure makes a little more sense within the context of LEGO Friends — as adventurous as the girls of the theme might be, I don't know that they're ready for an antarctic expedition. At least, not until they have some better warm-weather clothes!

Hats off to xccj for the excellent review! I liked the "facts about penguins".

As for the set itself, it doesn't seem too bad, although Mr. Penguin struck me as a little Galidorian - that piece will never be anything other than a penguin. (or is it Ms. Penguin? :shrugs:) If you want a penguin...

Well, that can be said of pretty much all LEGO animal molds. They're designed with very particular uses in mind, and alternate uses are few and far between.
