Are You Ready For Some Football....part The Second

Well, either Marilyn or Matt Hasselbeck gift-wrapped a victory for the Cruisers this weekend. 81-70 is the final, and I was a 10½ point underdog. But I'm not about to complain or gloat: Jimmie gloated, and Tim, the commissioner, came up with this story to switch kickers and wide receivers after the fact, creating a tie between the Touchdown Titans (Tim) and the Caribe Sharks (team Martinez), with the Titans having a player left to play tonight. Marilyn still said she wanted to start T.J. Who'sY

Reeling

The Cruisers got absolutely manhandled last week. Now 2-3, three games out of the division lead and a game out of the wild card (with a very rough stretch ahead), my season is just about done.   Maybe I should just concede that I don't have a good team, I won't have a good team, and I should just finish paying off the season and dump what good players I have. </self-destructive> Seriously, though: I had Chase Utley, Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina, Akinori Otsuka, Travis Hafner, Jason Giambi

Pool: Interrupted

Wow, what a day. Amanda & I have a saying that goes back to the Summer Mission in 2001. Actually, it's a saying for the 5 of us, but since we are 2 of the 5, it still counts. The saying: "Never a dull moment."   Well, Saturday, September 8, 2007, was not dull at all.   Saturday was move-in day for Amanda. Her mom, dad, pastor, sister and two nieces, Mikayla (6) and Ally (2) came down from Monroe to help. (The former 3 this morning with a trailer in tow, the latter last night with boxes.)

...but I Didn't Shoot No Deputy

End of an era....     All of the comments in the NOLA.com blog I copied are well-wishing. Except one: one guy made the comment that Jefferson Parish will become the new New Orleans: all the thugs that he kept out for 20 years will be moving in.   -KIE

Shore Turtles......heh

197½ lb., 25.1% body fat ()   Last night, I finished VNOLG. Level 48. Had waaaay too much equipment to go through. Bought a stone ripper just before the little quest for the stone ripper. Man, I wish I could recoup some of those stone shards. (I played as Nuparu, so stone shards went to my weapons.) 12 Attack 14 Defense 21 Technique   A high Technique makes the game a lot easier: Defense becomes less important when you're dodging the attacks, and Attack rating can take a back seat when you

To Capture A Chapel...

Paraphrase of a conversation overheard at a long table in a Baton Rouge Logan's Roadhouse two weekends ago...   "So, what's going to happen with Hurricane Erin?" "More than likely, it'll approach land, say 'Am I ready yet? No.', and back away. This pattern will continue for about five weeks." *laughter* "Okay, then what about Hurricane Felix?" "Oh, he'll just wander around out in the Atlantic. If it does hit anything, it'd be a miracle."     For the record, Felix and Erin are my brother's f

204½ lb., 24.0% body fat   Where were you five years ago today? I remember where I was.     Five years ago today, it was not Wednesday. It was Saturday. It was Saturday and I had a whistle.   I was a basketball referee for the Upward basketball league at the church I attended, First Baptist Church of Moss Bluff. I wasn't that good, and I'm still not that good at it. (I'm prone to getting caught up watching the game instead of, y'know, actually refereeing it.)   Anyway, the games lasted fr

An Xtraordinarily Ominous Beginning

I mentioned earlier this year (because I couldn't get it together last year) that Amanda gave me XM Satellite Radio for Christmas. She got me a receiver & antenna, an FM adapter, and a 30-day subscription. While I'm content to listen to WBSN or WODT whenever I'm around New Orleans, and can generally stomach KLove between Baton Rouge and home, the only thing I'd need XM for is baseball games. See, I'm as big an MLB fan as Amanda is an NFL fan. (This is why she has Sirius, not for Howard Ster

Bonus!

I don't know how it is at your/your parents' offices, but down here, it's the Christmas season. And that means gifts. Not inter-person, but inter-company.   Oh sure, there's cards and all. But a week ago today, there were two large baskets filled with everything necessary for a spaghetti dinner (pasta, EVOO, marinara, real parmesan cheese, and a bottle of merlot), from Parson Sanderson, a company that sells sewer pumps. Unfortunately, there were only two, and my name wasn't on either of them.

Metamorphosis

211 lb., 25.2% body fat     Amanda joined a gym last week, and got me to join as well.   I'll be honest: I've been slacking in the weight control department. I'm 20 lb. above where I want to be, and don't even get me started about how much flab I'm carrying.   Still, a gym membership is a route I never expected I'd take. I mean, that's for people who work out, who take this seriously, who have these ridiculously sculpted body profiles like you see on the cover of Muscle & Fitness or one

This Ain't No Trip To A Foreign Land.

That cloud of dust you see was that which had accumulated on a song recorded in 1993 by Audio Adrenaline on their sophomore album, Don't Censor Me, from whence I derived the title of this entry.   Yes, Audio Adrenaline has been around 15 years. And I've been able to follow them for the last 13 of them. It's bad that they must go, but Bob Herdman (lead singer) is literally losing his voice: listen to the difference between "Big House" (recorded in 1993, yet can still be heard on K-LOVE), "Hands

Holiday Traditions

There are some things that are required for Christmas in Louisiana.   Hot weather: Today's high in greater New Orleans is 71° F (22° C). And there doesn't appear to be another arctic front on the horizon until the weekend. Who knows.   Tree trimmings: Not necessarily spanish moss garland. I borrowed some surplus ornament hooks just now at work, and will hang most of the 32 miniature blue glass balls I bought over the weekend. Small tree requires small lights and small ornamentation. And it's n

Wounded

Observe the manhandling of the Cruisers, in their home stadium, versus the Laplace Gators. Peyton on a good team, as if I ever had a chance. 0-2 becoming 0-3 on the way to 0-5.   That's not what hurts today though. Although yes, knowing I'm putting down $110 all told to get walloped week in-week out is an ego blow, there are other things.   Like, say, Friday night, when the whole of Napa Valley turned out to take out yon Über-Monster-of-the-Fortnight, the Void Shadow. Took 3 hours to kill. A

Mauled, Not Maced

39-14. MAN, that stung.   Let me get one thing straight, Chicago fan: It's not that no one said you could win that game. It's that no one wanted you to win that game. There's a difference.   Still, we get the feeling that there's a new attitude about the Saints. It feels like that this season wasn't a fluke, and that we're capable of not-being-laughingstocks, barring apocalyptic injuries. First thing on the April shopping list: a new cornerback. Fred Thomas, it's been wonderful, but it's t

Anticipation

Well, it's 7:45 PDT, and my flight leaves in about, hrm... 9 hours.   What am I doing still up?   Can't sleep.     I didn't get everything done on the model. I'm not officially in limbo, as I discovered two things. Jefferson Parish marked the wrong drawings as record drawings, and left off a vital piece of information in a semi-inconsequential lift station in Bucktown. Net result is that I have to design pump controls on the fly when I get back. I forgot to import some lines from the G5-

Sanctum

198½ lb., 24.2% body fat   Oh, what a weekend. Friday evening, I got to go eat at Rotolo's Pizzeria (not the one in Columbus) in the [French] Quarter with a group from UNO and then go to a game night at a church on Paris Avenue. There were four of us playing other-than-Balderdash: A Tulane student, a NOBTS student, myself, and an architect (the seminary student's husband). We played a round of Clue (I was dealt 3 rooms and a suspect, was nowhere near the solution when the accusation was made.)

I, Hamburger

For those of you that didn't know, there's a minor league baseball team in the New Orleans area: the New Orleans Zephyrs (though they actually play in Metairie).   Amanda & I like to go out for dates sometimes. Every Friday night, they've got fireworks, and we can also make a slight killing in pulling discarded (er, left unattended) MyCokeRewards bottle caps.   This past Saturday, we watched them play the Albuquerque Isotopes, on a pair of complimentary tickets Amanda won back in April whe

Hair In The Dryer Vent

Realization for the moment:   8 months ago, I was much more upset (not vocal, just... perturbed) about seeing Amanda's hair in my dryer vent. Not quite on the order of seeing Scout's (my brother/sister-in-law's 3 year old pug) hair, but I still had this "this doesn't belong" furrow in my brow.   Now, I see one of her long brown strands, and I smile.     Funny what 8 months'll do to ya.     -KIE

Macroscopia

Macros are your friends. Especially when you're making repetitive changes to Excel worksheets.   Now, to convince Excel to let me use the macros I recorded myself, in that they're NOT damaging to my computer.     Gosh, I just love how Microsoft Office XP has taken upon itself to think for me.   In other news, the model is officially behind, but, if it's correct when it wraps up the run tomorrow, I'm back on schedule. Probably won't be, but I can dream that I'm that good.   Now, to validate

It rocked last night. I even hit the F# in the tower D chord in In the Beginning, and it was all I could do not to fist pump. (I sing by ear, and end up sliding around. I usually can't pick up on thirds.) My mom said it was worth the 200 mile drive, even if I weren't in the choir. Amanda wanted to clap after the first song, and the two of them were the first two giving the standing O after it was over. It was awesome. Like I said, you had to be here. -KIE In an unrelated not

200½ lb., 25.0% body fat ()   So. Much. Football.   I know you guys are getting tired of it, I can just tell.   In the fantasy realm, the Moss Bluff Cruisers are 8 point favorites, visiting the Cookie Crunchers, a fellow rookie team. This game will be over by 7 PM tonight, so go ahead and follow the details here. Or at least in about 4 hours, when the games start.   Me, I will actually be in attendance of one of the real games: Tampa Bay at New Orleans.   Will be the first time since th
