Suddenly

She feels lost in her own life Treading water just to keep from slipping under And she wonders if she's where she's supposed to be Tired of trying to do it right Her dreams are just too far away to see how steps she's making Might be taking her to who she'll be And suddenly it isn't what it used to be And after all this time it worked out just fine And suddenly I am where I'm supposed to be And after all the tears I was supposed to be here She feels locked in her own life Scared

Legitimacy

Something I'm not going to claim in Fantasy Football this year.   Give you an idea of the futility I've put forth this year: According to the breakdown rankings (where your score is pitted against the scores of the entire league, and how you'd fare if you were playing someone other than your opponent that week, and readily visible versus your actual record), in games I've played, I'm 3-6. However, against the entire league, I'm 54-43-2. That's a full game over .500, yet my winning percentage is

The Saga Of Si's Stuff

Hooray, consonance!     Taking the time out from the 2007 Louisiana Civil Engineering Conference & Show to post this. (The KIEpod arrived a day early, but this has nothing to do with it.)   Every office has its characters. Some are even stereotypable (as opposed to stereotypical). Consider, for instance, a one Lewis. Lewis (his first name) is the office draftsman, and the original DEII employee. He's the only one who need never fear his employment during slow periods. However, his office

More Power!

What did I just say about when to post? Well geez, two days and I'm dragging bottom again.   The above line was the rallying cry of Tim Allen's character on Home Improvement, a sitcom probably before most of yours time. My maw-maw always called it "Tool Time," though, after the in-show television show. Why the obscure reference? Well, yesterday I tried to use a power tool of my own volition for the first time. Namely, cut a hole in this desk here at the apartment. I mean, who makes an "office

The Politics Of The Coffee Pot

That coffee discussion I mentioned yesterday? It's become the "Chicory Conflict," and is in danger of escalating into "Coffee Wars 2007".   DEII has purchased, or leased or something, a couple of commercial coffee-makers, to replace the coffee pots & coffee makers we seem to go through. One of the neat features of the new coffee makers is the multiple Thermos-style coffee pots, allowing different brews to be hot simultaneously. You've probably seen these things at the continental breakfast

...but Not A Dollar Short.

I know, I'm a day later posting this than I expected. Yesterday I went to Baton Rouge to meet my mom & dad, and my brother and his fiancée. Watched some World Cup, got the replacement computer desk and the chair I mentioned in the last post on the proper side of the Mississippi River (My dad was just tired of it taking up space in the store room at the house.), and went to play disc golf at Highland Road park with little brother. (Yes, Omi, that was when you messaged me.)   As far as Frida

Playing With Traffic

One of the highlights of the past couple of weeks has been the kickoff of construction of the Elmwood Park sewer improvement job. This 1.4 million dollar job involves the relocation of a sewer lift station in a narrow clearance between a buried fiberoptic duct bank and the curb of Wilson Drive, in Metairie, LA. It is a very narrow strip of land where the station must be located, and there's not much room to lay out materials on the side away from the street (There's a canal there.), so the contr

The Last Hurrah

Who knew the first Joker would outlive the second Joker?   Heath Ledger was found dead in his SoHo apartment this afternoon, at the age of 28. Pardon me whilst this 28-year-old ponders his own mortality.     I guess it just goes to show you that fame, fortune, and a budding career a reason-for-living do not make. Take this to heart, those of you in high school and college: there must be more to life than what Mr. Ledger found.       -KIE

Further Off The Hook

Yeah, so the schedule I proposed two days ago has been scrapped. Two days ago, Amanda's parents (Saints fans in their own right) won tickets to the game from a radio station in Monroe, so they will be coming down instead of Marcie and her daughter (Amanda's 10-years-older adoptive sister and niece).   Amendedments to schedule: Saturday 9:45 AM: Breakfast at the Peppermill Restaurant 11 AM: Saints Hall of Fame in Kenner 1:30 PM: Arrive at tailgate  Sunday 9 AM: Departure for Monroe Her dad is

Requiem For A Kexpod

My iPod died today. It was a slowish death, but the final straws were the forced plug-in to a radio/docking station. Less than 7 hours attached to it, and the sound quality deteriorated rapidly.   It will be replaced this weekend with an early self-birthday gift, an iPod Video of undetermined color and hard drive size.   -KIE   P.S. Kex, do you need that essay on O. Henry that was left on the iPod?

Christmas In New Orleans

<horn intro> Magnolia trees at night, sparkling bright Fields of cotton look wintery white When it's Christmastime in New Orleans A barefoot choir in prayer fills the air Mississippi folks gathering there 'Cause it's Christmastime in New Orleans You'll see a dixieland Santa Claus Leading the band to a good old Creole beat Golly what a spirit, you can only hear it Down on Basin Street Your cares will disappear, when you hear Hallelujah, St. Nicholas is here When it's Ch

Turnabout

All my life, my parents have fed me, in one way or another. Okay, not my entire life, but it has been them buying or cooking me food.   Tomorrow, the tables turn.     Amanda tells me that I now have two dishes in my back pocket, to pull out on command as it were. One is the chicken parm, which I still tweak now and then. (Once I get good at making tomato sauces, it'll probably settle.) The other is a variation on Asian short ribs. These are beef ribs cut flanken style (across the bones, as op

Opening The Orange Box

I'm not going to say TF2 owns my soul or anything, but it is taking a good chunk of my free time.     Oh, and if anyone wants to volunteer their time with Photoshop to make a Targa spray for me, I'd be quite appreciative. I have everything except the program ready.     -KIE, who is glad the value of his existence is not defined by his skill (or, more properly, lack thereof) in competitive FPS games.

The Second Hurdle

Printed out today, because I just found out that they won't send it through the mail.....   (with many formatting errors...I'm transcribing a PDF as best I can)     Well, I'm official now. Time to start studying.     -KIE

Tryptophantic Advent (2008)

To the new reader, I would still like to call attention to the original Thanksgiving entry back in 2006. If I get an update on those prescriptions, I will post it here.   In more current news, I have a lot to be thankful for this year. My mother & I will be spending Thanksgiving in Monroe with my fiancée and her family, since my father went offshore this morning. As soon as I can get away from work, I'm headed to Baton Rouge to meet up with my mom to go to Monroe in one vehicle.   Also, I'

Spider & Shark

Brandy is officially due in 0-2 weeks. I am authorized to ask Michael, from now until birth, when he calls me if this is "The Call." Just putting the rest of you on notice.   Oh, and if any of you feel so inclined, pray for my mate [in the context of European/Australian english] from college, Earl: he was in a car accident Tuesday, and apparently the seat belt severely injured his pancreas, sending him to the ER and then ICU halfway into a diabetic coma.   This was posted Wednesday at wired.c

The Laundry Train

Hurrah for getting back on BZPower! Hurrah for getting back on my blog.     Hurrah for forgetting the post I was going to post when it finally came back up!       Hurrah for running laundry!       -KIE, who won't be in attendance in DC tomorrow.....but will next year.

Are You Ready For Some Football....part The First

This evening, former LSU and Michigan State head coach Nick Saban takes the Miami Dolphins to Pittsburgh to play the Super Bowl XL champion Steelers. In other words, the NFL season starts tonight. And with it, countless offices, pubs, and bars become distracted for the next 4 months. Why? Two words:   Fantasy Football.   My office is not immune. Nay, far from it. The Moss Bluff Cruisers host a "team" from Kenner whose name I can't type with a straight face. "But KIE!" you no doubt inquire,

The Maroon Mug

Taking a litte time out to post about the neat stuff being passed out at the office. First, there was an ink pen on Monday, and then yesterday [while I was at the parish office], a coffee mug with the company logo.   I'll probably get to display it prominently at the Yenni building, every morning when I no longer have internet access during the day.   I'm not looking forward to that. Then again, it'll be good for a change in scenery, and who knows: I may get stuff done at that point.     Too

Kalmah's Got Nothing On This.

shadowpirakafan, I'm doing better, although I do have half a mind to take off the last hour of work and go take a nap. Though if I do that, I should go work on my MOC for BrickFest. I might even be able to take some pictures before BrickFest, depending on what I can get my hands on and when.     In the interim, an email I got all of 35 minutes ago:     Tasty. *twitch*   -KIE, who after a week still hasn't gotten the KexPod
