Apocalyptica: Reflections

Apocalyptica is a well-known Finnish band that presently comprises three cellists: Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaakso, and Paavo Lötjönen. I'm not such a huge fan of their earlier, cello-only albums; while there's something to be said for purism, it's also a sure-fire way to retain a fringe following and not much else. For instance, one of their early albums, Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, is interesting to me mainly as a musical experiment; while it's a pretty well-done interpretat

Presidential Produce Yayz

As of March 20, 2009, the White House has an organic vegetable garden.   First Lady Michelle Obama broke ground on the garden at a special ceremony.   ------------------------   I want to grow some of my own food as well, but being an apartment-dweller, I'm not lucky enough to have a piece of land. A rooftop garden would be the way to go, but first I'll need A. access to the roof, and B. permission to do my thing up there. After that, it's just a matter of seeds, supplies, and a little swe

Bitil Surprize

On Tuesday, I came across a 40%-off clearance sale on Mistika. I bought the only one I'd been loath to pay full price for, and the only one I was missing:   Bitil.   My expectations were low, low, low. My general impression from images of the set had been that it was mediocre, lackluster, sub-par. BZP friends on MSN had told me Bitil wasn't worth the money. The only pieces I really wanted were the yellow Rahkshi limbs, and I knew where I could get those separately. But forty percent off for th

Rebirth And Renewal: Artist's Commentary

Discussion of the MOC itself should be directed to the BBC topic.   --------------------     This MOC was started a long time ago in response to a building challenge on another site, to make a creation based on a work of art. I found my inspiration in an image by a prolific artist who goes by the alias "soundlessdawn":   I'd been itching to use Nuju's Hordika weapons as wing sections, and this struck me as the perfect application. The glow-in-the-dark exoskeleton design came later, after

Where Does The Time Go?

A year ago today, I was a fresh reserve officer-in-training at the reserve officer school in Hamina, a harbour town with a rich military tradition and a climate from Hades. I spent my 21st birthday on the garrison. Fuuuuun.   Back in Canada two years ago, on my 20th birthday, I was supposed to go out for dinner with my cousin and two of my fave bros. I was too depressed to make it and most likely cried myself to sleep.   Tomorrow, I turn 22. Hopes are high as I plan to spend the weekend actual

Four (score And Seven) Years Ago

No, I'm not reciting the Gettysburg Address, although it is among the finest speeches ever made and one that every American ought to learn.   I'm talking about the attack sustained four years ago by this noble international institution. For those of us who were here at the time, the weeks that followed were marked by frustration. The forums' existence was suspended indefinitely. We had to find other things to do with the time that we had, until then, devoted to activities on this site.   I spe

Seven Years

That's how long I've been a member of BZPower, as of April 17th. I guess that makes me one of the real old-timers, lol. Old enough to remember the cyber-attack of '02 that shut this place down for a month. Old enough to remember Tufi Piyufi's earliest mark of notoriety, when she innocently posted pictures from a LEGO merchant's catalogue that set off one of the first set-spoiler frenzies ever. Ah, those were the good old days... before we had spoiler tags or even a real spoiler policy. Hey, h

Speed Racer Is A Ridiculously Good-looking Movie

The #1 reason I bought it on DVD: Emile Hirsch plays the title role. He also played the lead role of Christopher McCandless in Into the Wild, one of my all-time favourite films. These shots are from the respective movies' "epiphany" sequences, where the characters come to the end of their journeys -- a literal end in the case of the latter.     Speed: I don't know why I'm doing it anymore. Racer X: You don't climb into a T-180 to be a driver -- you do it because you're driven. ~ Royalton:

So I Visited The Library Last Week

Here's what I borrowed:   Numerology: The Magic Mirror of Numbers; What Your Dreams Reveal; Thus Spake Zarathustra, by Nietzsche; Your Future Now, a book on divination; Self-Esteem; Restricted for Children: How to Protect a Child from Media Trauma; and a CD, Brand New Day by Sting.   I probably won't get around to reading all of them cover to cover, but I'll read enough to satisfy myself.   Numerology's been an interest of mine for a while now. Even long before I got into it, I always

...but No Bike Helmet.

Wednesday, October 18, 2006   19:00   I receive a phone call from an acquaintance. I've been waiting for this call. She tells me what I already know: My Stuff has arrived. I'm thrilled to hear it.   This dates back to my visit home last May. That's when I packed My Stuff. Too much of it to take back with me across the Atlantic. I filled a big cardboard box and still had a bunch unpacked. So I left My Stuff and flew back to resume my rite of manhood in the Finnish military.   Meanwhile, my m

2 K 7

The year of our Lord two thousand seven is upon us. Congratulations to all of us who made it through the previous year without slipping on banana peels or getting hit in the face with cream pies. This humble scribe (or reasonable facsimile thereof) returns from two weeks of carefree winter vacation and resumes the proverbial grind. School is once again front and center in his life outside these pages, with summer employment and the requisite driver's license and registration (car) currently the

Mystery Piece Has Me Baffled; Barraki Eyes In A New Colour!

Technic Liftarm 1 x 16 thin I've never seen this piece myself, and no one seems to know what set(s) it made its appearance in. It seems an oddity, too specialized (and fragile?) to have warranted continued releases, but the photo is obviously real. Anyone have a clue where it's from? Also, Barraki eyes are coming out in at least one new colour this year. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «Colour: trans orange (Jaller Inika) In Sets: 7630 Front-End Loader 8597 (small Power

Sharing

You know how my job involves kids, right? Well, the two youngest are boys, aged 6 and 8. I'll call them "Sam" and "Todd." Sam goes to preschool and Todd is in 2nd grade (school starts at age 7 here). Their mom, my employer's wife, no longer stays at home like she did when I started there; she's now working at an outpatient clinic. This means I have a lot more responsibility, but also a lot more freedom. Gradually, in these past few months, I've gotten to know my work environment and the people i

The title? That's my new signoff.   Because. . . I've used the old one forever, I was never terribly enamored of it to begin with, it doesn't actually stand for anything specific, and Bitter Cold makes BC sound much cooler than my name does. So yeah, he's allowed to use it now.   Oh, and -- pizzazz. Not so much the fact that it's a play on the other half of my name -- the (wooOOoo!) silent half -- but just the idea of having a pair of eyes looking out from the end of every post struck my

Stupid

Why do I drink coffee and then wonder why my stomach is all grouchy and gross-feeling?   Why do people pay money for someone else to give them pre-digested answers when they could just figure it out for themselves, and gain so much more in the process?   Why are we so caught up in petty dramas, material acquisition, and pretending to be something we're not?   Why do we sabotage ourselves and hurt the people close to us?   Why?   It's stupid. :annoyed2:   [Edited to add comment thread to en

Evacuate And Start All Over

That's what I've had to do with my computer. What a chore.   It turns out that the Trojan horse was indeed wreaking its destruction deeper than the level of the OS itself. I figured that out when my keyboard and mouse started going all balky and fritzy under Ubuntu. I have now backed up my files, reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled Windows, and begun the process of restoring everything else. Ubuntu is next.   If that didn't kill the sucker, I don't know what will.
