Redmond

A few entries ago I mentioned I'd tell you all when it sunk in that I was going to move across the country to work for Microsoft.   Having just moved across the country to work for Microsoft, I can inform you all it has yet to sink in.   (Apartment's quite nice, though.)

Flash Fic #2: Faith

The reformation of a planet is not a pretty thing.   It may seem simple to onlookers; a bit of mask magic here, a giant robot there, a few shiny lights, and presto: one Spherus Magna, made to order. Breathtaking vistas and awe-inspiring oceans available at no additional cost.   But a planet has enough going on beneath the surface when it’s had millions of years to settle down; one that’s just been clobbered together by sheer force of will is going to be doing some heavy lifting behind the scene

48 Hours

Until I'm moved in on the West Coast (give or take an hour). Tomorrow will be spent packing, Saturday will be spent flying.   I'll let you all know if I ever manage to actually wrap my head around the fact I'm moving across the country to work for Microsoft.   (As an aside: 28 notifications while I was gone, most of them the Mass Effect topic. I really ought to check out the new multiplayer stuff.)

Blackout

I don't know if any of you are familiar with the Newsflesh trilogy, by Mira Grant; it's a trilogy focusing on a group of journalists (bloggers) in a post-zombie-apocalypse society. It's got realistic near-future tech. It's got news reporting. It's got politics, and I mean campaign politics, not just government conspiracies and the like (though there's the fair share of those as well). It's got multiple perspectives. It's got zombies by the truckload.   In short, it was written for me.   The

Out Of Town

Just a heads up that I'll be out of town from now until next Thursday in order to get bitten by bugs, rained on, and generally have a very good time, with particularly limited Internet access from Monday to Thursday.   I'll try to log in at least once a day on the off chance anyone really needs to get in touch with me, but, uh, let's just say it would not be the best time to ask me deep philosophical questions requiring a two-page response.

The Ambassador (Mass Effect Very Short Story)

In the interest of full disclosure, this isn't really a story so much as a scene from a very long, involved story I'll probably never write. And it's only really 90% Mass Effect.     Swoosh.   Ding.   “Welcome, councilor. Please select your destination.”   “Citadel Embassies.”   “One moment, please…”   Rumble.   Jane Myers waited for the sound of the elevator whooshing up the side of the Citadel to fill her ears before passing the datapad she held over to the man standing next to her. Obligatory Avengers Post

It sure wasn't high cinema, but it was probably the most enjoyable thing I'll see on a theater screen all year.

Recent Goings-On

We're back (again!) Which is a good thing, since lately stuff has been happening! Whoa! Exciting! Thrills! Exclamation marks!   But seriously...   First of all, the Sam minifig that the ever-awesome Nuju Metru made came in the mail thanks to the efforts of also-ever-awesome xccj. He's already making friends with the Dalek figure on my desk.   Second, I finished my sophomore year of college! As far as I know, all my classes went pretty well grade-wise, and I'm already looking forward to next yea

Yuuko Matsuoka, You Have My Respect

Some of the stuff this woman pulled off in translating the Harry Potter books into Japanese is brilliant. You think making puns is tough enough, try translating them.

Oh, We're Back

Good to see things are all sorted out. I've seen plenty of forum hackings in my time, and I followed the pattern with this one that I've learned works best - just ignore the hacker and leave it to the staff. It's an attention game.   ...Granted, that was made easier by the fact it's darn near impossible for me to contact other BZPers outside of here. Which I really ought to remedy, so for future reference you can find me on Twitter as BoltGSR.   In other news, life continues as normal, with t

The Greatest Night Of My Life

Got to see Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett (the Rifftrax/MST3K guys) riff a pair of old 70's school-education films live, followed shortly by John Hodgman hitting me in the shoulder with a 5-Hour Energy.   Milwaukee, you ain't half bad sometimes.   EDIT: ohmygod and new Toonami was on. New Toonami. Actual new skits with Tom. They reviewed Mass Effect 3. Is this real life?

Seek A Way Out!

I've been waiting for this. In my games of 2012 post a while back I mentioned a little title then known as Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die, the sequel to the wonderful (and mind-screwy) 999: Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors.   Today, Aksys formally announced GPD'll be coming to America under the title Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, with 999 to now be considered part of the Zero Escape series.   For those not in the know, both games focus on a group of 9 people trapped in a seale

Ssc9 And Other Stuff

Draft of my SSC9 entry is done; hopefully I'll have time to give it some polish tomorrow and/or Sunday. I could try and revise now, but I've found it always helps to wait a day or two between draft and revision. It's rather different from the previous two fics I've put up; for one thing, it actually follows the perspective of just one character. Imagine that! Still needs a title, though; I always wind up doing those late.   In other news, logging plenty of time into Mass Effect 3, though I'm g

Being A Responsible Member Of Society Is...

...not using a VPN to unlock your copy of Mass Effect 3 at 9 AM tomorrow, but rather attending classes until 5 PM and then studying for midterms until 11 PM.   (ps: being a responsible member of society sucks)

On Crossovers

I like crossovers.   There, I said it. It's a statement that doesn't really reflect well on my personal taste - after all, when most people hear "crossover", their brain translates it to either "cashgrab" or "unspeakably bad fanfiction" depending on the context. (Note: if the context is comics, "continuity nightmare" is also acceptable.) There's not really much I can do to argue against that - for proof of the former, direct yourself to any number of nonsensical promotional crossovers (recent

Mass Effect Fans, I Apologize For This Ahead Of Time

Shepard: What do you think about the people we're picking up? Joker: Well, about the ones you went out with last...   Now, I didn't pay much attention in Sunday school, but I'm pretty sure they said something about watching out for guys who can shoot fire from their hands. Just putting that out there.   Gali's great, but are we sure Tali hasn't got a long-lost sister or something? 'Cause I mean with the mask and the name and the switching between "nice" and "unholy terror", I'm seeing a resembl

Heads-Up To Creative Hf Fans

There's a HF video contest with some very impressive prizes (and very little publicity) going on right now.       I personally don't intend to enter, but it's such a great opportunity for HF fans that I'd hate to see people miss out just because they didn't know about it. On the plus side, if not enough people enter, it seems they'll provide a two-week extension - but I wouldn't bet on that.   Source: Hero Factory Discussion

It's Been A Pretty Good Month

First month of 2012 is on it's way out. Dunno about the rest of you, but for me it was pretty good for a couple different reasons.   On the gaming side of things, we got so much Ace Attorney news this month that I could jump for joy. The live-action movie got good reviews and is slated for international release at some point; Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney has a very high-quality studio doing its animation; and of course Ace Attorney 5 was finally announced. I remember the leadup to Apollo

Ace Attorney 5 Just Got Announced
