Seek A Way Out!

I've been waiting for this. In my games of 2012 post a while back I mentioned a little title then known as Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die, the sequel to the wonderful (and mind-screwy) 999: Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors.   Today, Aksys formally announced GPD'll be coming to America under the title Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, with 999 to now be considered part of the Zero Escape series.   For those not in the know, both games focus on a group of 9 people trapped in a seale

9 Years

Well, that's that then. 9 years ago (if we skip the leap days), I registered with a little Bionicle site called BZPower. 8 years ago, I left. 1 year ago - plus a few days - I came back. Bionicle had gotten the axe by then - no more sets, not many more serials.   Why'd I leave?   Honestly, part of it is that I thought I was too grown-up for Bionicle. I was a middle schooler - I didn't want some boring, the-heroes-always-win stuff for kids! I wanted something darker and edgier, like Sonic Ad

The Two Matts

Today is, as you've probably heard, Ninjo day. Ninjo was, for those of you who weren't around way back then, a super nice, helpful staff member here on BZP. The years have dulled my memory of him a bit, but the fact I remember that much just from his username should tell you something about how awesome he was.   And then today I found out his name was Matt.   It's crazy, you know? The way the universe kind of piles up coincidences. Let me explain.   Around the time I left BZP in '04, I joined

It sure wasn't high cinema, but it was probably the most enjoyable thing I'll see on a theater screen all year.

Ssc9 Entry Stuff

So, it's done and up. Go and read it before you read on; I'll wait.   So! A character piece. Huh. Quite different from the last two things I've written. Anyways, I've always liked Onua as a character, even though he had one of the more neutral personalities of the original six. If I'm not mistaken in the early early materials he was supposed to have been the eldest of the group, and even though that idea was of course dropped he still feels that way in my mind. I particularly enjoyed findi

Ace Attorney streams

Hey! Part of the reason I've been away a bit the past week or two is that I've been working on getting ready for the new Ace Attorney, Dai Gyakuten Saiban, being released. (I help staff an Ace Attorney site as well.)   Today I'm streaming the first two episodes of the game over at Twitch. Right now we're taking a break (having finished the game's first episode), but then we'll be moving to episode two. Join us if you're interested, or take a look at the stream for episode one for some (slightly)

The Long Night

The name's Kyle Hyde. It's been three years since I quit the force and left New York. Now I'm a salesman for this outfit called Red Crown. On the surface, Red Crown's a door-to-door sales firm dealing in household goods. But Ed, the boss, has himself a little business on the side. He finds things that don't always want to be found. Keeps it quiet, too. From time to time, I lend a hand. Ain't the greatest gig in town, but... I got nowhere to be and nothing better to do. You hear me, Bradley? This

Two Internships and a Hike

Man, this summer is just flying by, it feels like. Well, three interesting things happened/are happening this week: The good news about an internship: I seem to have landed one with the Epic Critics Club. Ought to be quite fun. The bad news about an internship: turned out yesterday during a team meeting that the method we've been using on my project at work is actually much more limited and less useful than we thought. Going to be fun explaining this to my boss. The other news: hiking (a sm

Cenotaphs

When it comes to Bionicle, I'm a pretty simple guy. Give me some Toa, a few Matoran for them to protect, and maybe an unexpected mask power, and that'll usually get me pretty far. It's pretty telling that I stopped following the story closely around the time of 2004.   Which makes the fact I enjoyed Cederak's Cenotaphs pretty crazy in my eyes. It's a story from the outlaws' perspective, a story that rather than use the usual heroes and villains and settings opts to build a world out of the blank

Well, That Was Very Bad.

Something extremely disturbing happened to a close friend of mine, and I'm still a little shaken. This is going to be a difficult few weeks, but all I can really do is put faith in modern medicine and his/her friends and family.   Without going into further details, suffice to say I've learned a rather important lesson about one's lifestyle, and all I can say is I'm thankful I have the personality I do, which should help me avoid ever coming close to something similar.   So that this isn't a co

Flash Fic: Boot Integrity Testing

The little being opened its eyes slowly. It knew that it had eyes, and it knew where it was, and it knew what it was. I am a Tohunga, it thought.   With trembling arms it pushed itself to sit up. Across from it, three cloaked beings watched intently. Its eyes focused and refocused, photoreceptors of metal shooting electricity back through tissue and wire alike to its central processor.   The first of the three spoke not unkindly. "Please identify yourself."   The little Tohunga's voice wa

Lego Stores

Finally got a chance to stop by the new LEGO store in my hometown while out with my mom on some errands.   Holy cats was it slick. My mom was practically jumping with excitement when she saw the LEGO LoTR sets (I knew I got it from somewhere). Unfortunately, budget combined with my moving across the country next week meant we figured we'd better not buy anything, but I think we both know where to find gifts for the other now. I also meant to take a few pictures, but it completely slipped my m

The End Of The Year

It is getting so dark that I can scarcely go on writing; and my brush is all worn out. Yet I should like to add a few things before I end. I wrote these notes at home, when I had a good deal of time to myself and thought no one would notice what I was doing. Everything that I have seen and felt is included. Since much of it might appear malicious and even harmful to other people, I was careful to keep my book hidden. But now it has become public, which is the last thing I expected... W

Court Is In Session

Hello, folks! At some point today I actually realized that maybe one of these blog things would be useful. No idea how much I'm going to use it yet, but hey.   Expect this blog to be updated intermittently rather than on any real schedule; possible things to be posted here include little updates on stuff I'm interested in that don't warrant a whole topic and bits and pieces of writing that may or may not be expanded into something bigger.   As for the future, a friend of mine gave me an absolut

Calling all Bionicle writers/readers!

With Bionicle back around (that still feels weird to type) and an uptick in library activity, the age-old question has reared its head: should we merge Comedies into Epics and Short Stories?   If you have any thoughts on the matter, please, head over to that tracker ticket and share them! And if you have any other ideas for the library, I'm always open to listen.

Glad To Be Wrong, And Other Good Stuff

So in yesterday's entry I said I probably wasn't going to finish up my entry for COTSSC2. I am glad to prove myself wrong! You can check it out here if you're so inclined - it's ostensibly a mystery, though I have to admit I wasn't pushing it particularly hard. There are some pieces here and there that I feel could be improved, but there's always pieces that could be improved. (If you want to take the long view of things, of course, everything could be improved.)   In other good news, Sherloc

Flash Fic #4: Schedule

In her flat in southeast London, Mrs. Havenson put the kettle on for tea and started cleaning.   She was very particular about the tea; the stove was dialed to just the right heat, the bottle-green kettle was carefully selected and filled just full enough. She hummed to herself as she worked; the sun shone through her windows, illuminating a few old papers resting upon the kitchen table, which she scooped into a bin to dispose of later. Her shoes, wide-toed and comfortable for a woman of her age

New

It's a New Year and with it comes a fresh opportunity to shape our world. So this is my wish, a wish for me as much as it is a wish for you: in the world to come, let us be brave – let us walk into the dark without fear, and step into the unknown with smiles on our faces, even if we’re faking them. And whatever happens to us, whatever we make, whatever we learn, let us take joy in it. We can find joy in the world if it’s joy we’re looking for, we can take joy in the act of creat

Mo Wri No Na

Suddenly it's November again! Which means NaNo. And between that and incoming Bionicle 2015, I'm really stacking up the reasons to finish that sequel to The Shadow and the Sea next month.   I actually put 50k words into it last NaNo, and was kind of horrified to find I wasn't actually near the end. The plan this time is to put another 50k into it, and hopefully that'll finish it. Regardless of if it does or not, it's going to need a lot of editing and cutting. But it's a project that's been

Away-ish 'till Friday

Hey guys, just a heads up that because literally every single one of my professors decided "we'll have everything due just before spring break so people don't need to work over spring break", I will be extremely busy this week. If you need to get in touch with me, I'll try and reply to PMs as quick as I can, but I may be difficult to reach on Skype and won't be around the boards much.   See you all Friday!

Because you can never have too many Japanese adventure game banners.   (If I do ever get around to picking up an import 3DS, Time Travelers'll probably be one of the first games I grab. Looks like Heavy Rain meets time travel.)
