Alka-Seltzer: How to Read It and Get the Joke

A TALE OF SUMIKI'S DAD   how to party with alka-seltzer and mean it   barbecued draperies: if you don't eat it, we cover it up for free   fuzzy shrimp   it's elementary, my dear cheesepuff   lips: be free or create asphalt   you can do things with watermelon   lysol for your sinuses   you've got a candy cane, we've got pretzel lampshades

SUMIKI INVESTIGATES: Can Staff Change Their Names?

Hello and welcome to a special edition of SUMIKI INVESTIGATES, the pinnacle of lazy and probably biased blog-based quasi-journalism.   For a long time here at BZPower, staff members have been barred from changing their names. This was changed a few years ago so that staff members could change names, but not on their own whims; rather, all changes had to be approved by the administration. Members could change their names every 90 days, Premier members every 45, and OBZPCs every 30.   And for a ve

EXCITEMENT (and also general rambling)

YOU ALL KNOW WHAT DAY IT IS TOMORROW, RIGHT   OF COURSE YOU DO   PROBABLY BECAUSE YOU'RE READING IT ON THAT DAY AND NOT ON THIS ONE   BUT ANYWAY   YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS, RIGHT?   THAT'S RIGHT, KIDS   SAY IT WITH ME   IT'S SUMIKI'S BIRTHDAY   (what, did you think I was going to talk about some movie or something? pfffffffft)   Also, I must apologize for inactivity over the past few weeks. I've been pretty busy, but it's going to culminate in a concert wherein I play the piano portion of a Nocturn

The Hatpile of Hagerstown

After a protracted breakfast, we began the day at 11:30 and headed away from Winchester on Route 7. We rolled through rolling countryside and a half hour later found ourselves in West Virginia, on one of its little nubs. Our destination: Harpers Ferry, made famous by John Brown's 1859 abolitionist raid on its US Armory. After Brown's raid, Harpers Ferry continued to be an important stronghold during the Civil War, sitting at the confluence of two states at the war's beginning and three by war's

The Strangest Pieces

I swear this isn't a music blog.   (Okay, it kind of is.)   I've listened to a wide swath of different pieces of classical music, and I occasionally come across some things that are just ... well, strange. We're talking off-the-wall levels of goofy here.   -----La Monte Young - Piano Piece for David Tudor #1   This piece doesn't even have a proper score, just a sheet of paper telling the performer to come out onto the stage with a bucket of water and a bale of hay for the piano to drink and eat.

Concerning Year One

I've been thinking about this for a while, and I decided to say it here, especially after seeing Makuta_of_Oz's closed question topic in GD.   Year One is on hiatus.   No, before you react one way or another, it is not canceled. It will never be canceled. The recent BZPower downtime gave me time to reflect on how ineffective the topic was becoming. I also now realize that I'll have to be more directly involved with a lot more than I'd anticipated. (Not like this is a bad thing.)   For the next m

I Love Staff Name Changes

Because inevitably, there's a GD topic about it, and it's the only time any of us can spam/RP in that forum. Currently, I've aligned myself with a witch character from a Shakespearean episode of Doctor Who, and we're slowly taking out the demons who inhabit soda bottles, which can take on human forms.   A subplot involves Spock trying to play 3D chess with parakeets and shampoo bottles.

Comics

Comics.   The forum formerly known as Artwork III.   There are those who love the forum and there are those who don't. I don't get the impression that there are very many active members on here who are apathetic on it - it seems like everyone has an opinion, whether or not they express it, and independent of whether or not they are an active comic maker or are entering a work in the comics contest.   I respect comic makers and I sincerely believe that comics are a form of art. But comparing spri

The Adventures of Sumiki's Dad

You know how, a while back, I asked if people would read a comedy featuring my dad in the BIONICLE universe?   It has begun. (that's a link) Features Sumiki's Dad (of course), as well as a few members of Team Farm Animals in the beginnings of a gripping adventure.

Things are looking up

My grandmother went through Major Back Surgery #2 this past Thursday in order to repair the things that were going awry with the healing from Major Back Surgery #1. Because of the length of surgery, the amount of scar tissue from the first one, and the overall risk of complication, we thought that the ordeal would make her even weaker.   Two days later, she's walking around at twice what the doctors thought she'd be able to handle and hasn't needed nearly the same amount of painkillers she neede
