Buyer's Guide: 2014 Ninjago

On the heels of my last Ninjago review for the year, I have to admit that I was a fan for this wave through and through. And I also had the budget to buy most of them. (Well, except for the Ninjago City Temple, which is still on my wish list... waiting until October for double VIP points) But just saying "Buy em all" is a poor buyer's guide, so I should think on a more limited income level. So here's a quick rehash of my opinion of what Ninjago sets to get this year. In case you hadn't decided y

Pohatu Phantoka

My first 08 set. And he's the second remake of my third Bionicle set I ever bought. How does he compare?   Well, Pohatu olda just rocks all Toa of Stone, and that's final. Hewkii looks good without the brown, but Pohatu Phantoka cannot replace good old upside-down Pohatu. (Pohatu Nuva, yeah, he can replace him in a jiffy).     First, a quick note on the packaging. We're getting back to canisters again, baby! Woo Hoo! Sure, it's not a traditional canister, especially with the useless a

Series 7

Yay, Series 7 figs are availible in Fred Meyers! So I I swung by and grabbed some. I used a 10% off coupon, but it still turned out to be kinda pricey to buy eleven... and I'm still aiming to get at least five more. There were four boxes on display, but they were already fairly picked through.   Anyway, I got the Rocker Girl, the Bride, the Viking Woman, the Jungle Boy, the Aztec Warrior, the DareDevil, the Bagpiper, the Ocean King, the Grandma Visitor, the Swimming Champion, and the Evil K

Boba Fett and Slave I

BBC Topic!   Look at me, I made a MOC!   Since the CCBS characters came out, I've been wanting to build a to-scale ship for some of them. Lego's finally doing it with the speeder bike this summer, but that's a pretty small vehicle; I want a huge TIE Fighter and a massive XWing piloted by Vader and Poe, or something like that. The idea is doable, but a bit out of my price range at the moment.   When this contest rolled around, I thought it would be a good opportunity to do this scaled down. My fi

Tired All The Time

I can't say my life is bad, since I've managed to secure a bunch of the essentials: a college education, a regular job that actually pays for something that I'm fairly good at doing (but don't ask me to explain it), an apartment that is mildly tolerable even without air conditioning, and enough money that I can buy Lego without an overbearing sense of budgetary guilt.   But as of late, it's seemed very... basic. Work has been interesting, but I'm usually quite burned out by the end of the day, a

Recent Things I've Paid For

Rent Utilities Those two don't count.   Onto the real list: Universal Studios Two Day pass. See my entry on Florida trip. But man that park was expensive! Multiple BrickLink Orders... I should probably stop Chima Phoenix Temple. Got the classic space guy free set out of it too. Still haven't had the chance to build it, sadly. Captain America II Blu Ray. First real purchase of a Marvel movie, but I just really liked the action in this one. Randall Munroe's "What If" book. I suppose it's ki

Electronics I Want

Just a various list of new devices I would want upgrades on, in order of want.   New Laptop: I have a Toshiba Satellite that I got in December 2007. In Summer 07, I got a Toshiba Satellite that was the top of the line student laptop of the day. (Or well, high enough quality for it's $1,000 price tag.) Then it got stolen, and my replacement was a lower quality model. It's worked swell for five years, but now even web browsing can tax my system, and dare I even think about playing games on it!

Unnecessary Helpful Ads

The other day I was researching on a couple of sites to see who had the best deal on a product. (Korra Season 3, ended up picking it up from Target.) But despite having made the purchase, I keep getting ads from the various places I searched (Amazon, BestBuy, and Target) telling me they have the product I was searching for. Ya, that's right you do, cause I specifically searched for it on your site, and in Target's instance, I actually bought it there. So why are you still showing me the ad for i

Review: Heartlake Hot Air Balloon

I’ve gotten a few new sets recently, and since I’m not up to writing full front page reviews, I’ll provide a couple of short ones in my blog here.     Let’s start with 41097 Heartlake Hot Air Balloon from the 2015 Lego Friends line. This is cool because we haven’t seen a hot air balloon since the days of the Adventurers line, and this one gets some new pieces to help pull off the look. While the balloon pieces are obviously designed for one purpose, they offer enough connection points that I co

Good News / Bad News

Good News: I survived my roadtrip and made it to Dallas.   Bad News: My laptop seems to be dying and I can't get on the the Internet with it. So expect me to be even less active than usual.

Giddy Giddy Giddy

I am probably more excited about these than I should be... but oh well.     These were found at a Fred Meyers, who again released collectible minifigures in December when they're supposed to be out in January. (Granted, it's late December this time round.) They seriously must've gone out today. There were some picked through boxes, but there were also a bunch of unopened boxes in the back. Now, I could've just bought a full box and then sell the extras online... but I'm not that mean and do

Cosplay Question!

I'm contemplating doing a President Business outfit for BrickCon, but I don't quite know what to do for headgear. The evil helmet is a little too over the top, but the brick-shaped hair? Not going to happen with my short hair, sorry. But I have an idea to make it into a kind of hat. But where would I find a hat that I could easily glue stuff to? Also preferably one that won't turn into an oven cause that convention center doesn't stay cool when packed full of people. I've tried looking at

BrickCon People Caption Contest Part 2

I have a lot of cool people pictures from our fun times at BrickCon. Instead of just posting them all at once, I'll stagger them out into multiple blog entries, and let you submit captions for each of them / comment on em. No prize other than sharing your wit with the community.   Part 2

So, Update on Story Stuff?

The most ironic thing about the shutdown? I was one chapter shy of finishing my repost of my epic Kulagi's Kanoka. Now, after a second data loss, I have to repost it AGAIN. I'm not angry or anything (nobody was reviewing it anyway) but I find the irony amusing.   So I'm going to try and repost it. (And get my post count up some more... gee, I lost all of like 30 posts! That's a lot for me!) No, seriously, I'm reposting it! Maybe try to do it faster than last time. Maybe not. I've also co

Brick Universe Dallas

So last weekend I attended Brick Universe in Dallas, Texas. This is actually the first non-local convention I've been to since BrickFair 2011, so it was fun to see how many MOCs I could cram into a suitcase. I got a fair amount there; I think my stuff took up about 3 tables. (Stuff was grouped together by builders rather than themes, but most of my stuff was Bionicle anyway so no big deal.) I do think I was the one who traveled the furthest to get there; Oregon is just a bit further away than Vi

Florida Trip

Last weekend I went on a trip. Maybe not a vacation cause it was not exactly relaxing. But it was super fun. I got to hang out with two of my friends from my internship 1.5 years ago that I haven't seen since. It's kind of a big deal for me since I don't really have any friends locally that I can hang out with. Now I'm tempted to fly out and meet them more... too bad I won't be able to get time off work to do so. (Funny, it was a pretty instantaneous shift from having time but no money to having

About The Monster Contest

I mean, man, it's incredible how the entries have turned out. The MOCs seem to be rather high quality, with a few exceptions (AKA my entry) so that it's kind of hard to pick the best of em. I mean, usually BBC contests aren't this evenly matched, right? That, and most of the art entries are awesome... that was my best entry into this contest, and mine's being blown out of the water by some of the other ones. The game ideas are fun, but I am really impressed at the music (and video) submissio

Earthquake in the PNW

So I guess the other day was "Massive Earthquake awareness in the Pacific Northwest Day" due to an article posted by the NewYorker detailing the chances and consequences of a massive 9.0+ quake in the region. I knew most of the science behind it, but I didn't quite realize how woefully unprepared we are. Like, best estimates, we won't get electricity back for three weeks, running water for two months! Come on, my life it totally online, I don't know how I'd manage that! (I mean, I've done extend

Talking To Myself...

The other day I was reading Pearls Before Swine and there was a section where Rat was saying that it would be better to pile your writing under a box than in a blog, because it would still get the same amount of views but without the cost of internet service.   I can relate, but I don't really mind. I like talking (or writing) to, essentially, myself. I have my own computer where there's no internet access, and nobody goes on it but me. I started off by writing some personal diaries, which

Ranger Risk

I met up with my old Park Ranger bosses tonight and played a couple of games of risk.   Short story: I lost. First time minorly, second time dreadfully.   Long Story: We did two games. For the first game, I took Africa, and fought valiantly over Egypt and the Middle East. But then the fighting in the Americas was decided, and they came storming in from Brazil and wiped me out. Then that guy basically had all the power, the rest of us were fairly spread thin, so we called it a game   The seco

Hey Look, A Bionicle Based Creation Topic

Click For Topic   Gosh, that was hectic to write up. Not to mention all the pictures I had to go through.   Okay, so I have this new project. Back in 2001, the Toa Kanohi all came in six different colors. I finally completed my collection of the original 36 Toa Mata masks a while back, but what to do with them? Well, I plan to make a MOC for each of the 36 masks. And to give it a theme, I'm going to use the original six masks to recreate the Toa and use the rest to build various Rahi. This

Review: Loki's Cosmic Cube Escape

(Click for Link)   So... I have a couple of sets to review after my spending spree at Bricks Cascade, and here's the first. This has pretty much been the one Avengers set I just had to have, and it turns out the truck is just as cool or cooler than the figs! And you can read all about it on the front page... or rather, just briefly scroll through all the picts.

BrickCon People Caption Contest Part 6

Oh yeah, when I lock an entry, I don't get comments on it. Well, in that case, time to break out more BrickCon Photos!   Post something funny / witty / ironic as a caption for the photo, because you know you want to!   This time, it's Return of the Hat!   Part 6

Series 8 Minifigs

Hey, it's that time again. I heard internet rumors that series 8 figs were popping up in stores around the US, so I checked out my local Fred Meyers where I can usually get some good deals. And they had four boxes! Woot! (Actually, it sounded like they had 10+ as of a few days ago, but now they're down to four. There's a rabid AFOL crowd around here, I guess.) I helped some less-obsessive-than-me people find some of the figs they wanted (specifically, a fairy) and then I looked for some of

End of an Internship

Man, I had an awesome time at my internship in Dallas, TX, but sadly it is over. Now I most likely have two weeks of downtime before I drive back to the Pacific Northwest, unless I can get a job with them before I leave. (Seriously, as interesting as Texas is, I do kind of want to bail before the HOT weather shows up. It's already been a little too hot for me and the locals are calling it mild spring weather! Well, at least I can drive in the rain compared to most of em!)   But yeah, for the
