Interesting African Mystery

Ok, here's a mystery I heard about yesterday. It was a real event that happened in Africa. Only recently have scientists figured out what really happened.
In Africa, near a volcano, there is a village that lives near a volcano-crater lake. Everything was pretty normal until 2,000 people, all the animals, bugs, birds or whatever else just died one evening. The vegetation wasn't hurt, the buildings were in normal condition, and there were only 6 survivors.
Some of the victims have burns on their skin, but nothing on their clothes. The survivors reported smelling gunpowder, rotten eggs and surfer. They also reported an explosion sound from the lake. At the same time, the lake nearby turns from clear to bright orange/red.
Obviously, this bring scientists from around the world to see what happened. Everyone assumed the volcano was the culprit. I mean, they live within a few miles of it. But when they got there, there were no traces of sulfur anywhere. Not in the air, the lake, the victims, the plants, the ground, anywhere. Nothing out of the normal.
When they tested the lake to see if there was a volcanic burst that shot out fumes or something, it was clean and slightly cooler than average. Volcanic burst would have superheated the lake.
I'll post the answer at some point. What do you guys think happened?
