Close If Dupe

Onuki

Moderators please close this entry if it's a dupe or breaks any of the rules. :)

But seriously, the phrase "Close If Dupe" is quite possibly the stupidest fad to take hold of BZP. And the scary thing is that people do it automatically -- it's becoming a natural part of the topic-posting process. Before you know it, it'll be just as bad as my friend takuaE3 once predicted -- (well, sort of -- it was going to be a TZP topic :P) -- both the subtitle and the title will read "Close If Dupe." Not to mention the soliloquy we get at the end of the starting post -- "Moderators please close if this topic contains spam, flame, horseshoes, or imported radishes. Close if dupe."

The staff will close the topic if it needs it -- they don't need your sanction to do so!

And despite people -- heck staff members -- heck, Kex -- making fun of this practice in the old quotes topic (see: For Your Information), it still lives on. o_O

Try to get out of the habit. :P

seriously, if it's a dupe, the mods will close it. And if there's a chance it's a dupe, you look before you post.

Indeed, Onuki... I never really though "Close if dupe" as a fad, but it indeed is one. Before you notice, you're already putting "Close if dupe" in your topic's subtitle. But a very ironic thing is that new members who don't even know what it means still put it in their topic's subtitle. XD

Indeed. But fortunately, people don't seem to be as bad at missing other similar topics before they post anymore.

Yeah, and that's why it's spreading so quickly, because new members just assume that it's the right thing to say.

Maybe if Bink eliminates the "Topic Description" feature it'll solve half the problem. :wakeup2:

Lol, I put "Close if dupe" in my comics title as a joke :P

But yeah, it is pretty stupid.

Especially this one time:

Close if dope

That post is win. I want to frame it and laud it somewhere. Sometimes I wonder if most BZP members know what a 'dupe' is...

Oh, and i think I 'Guru'd' your question, there...

Fortuantly, I've never written "Close if dupe", but I have done almost the same thing. Like "Moderators please move if this is in the wrong spot" or "Moderators please close if this isn't right". Although the latter I've only done once or twice, I've still done it.

Thank Onuki, I'll be sure to stop. :P

If so, then we could probably eliminate the whole problem by getting rid of posts as well (and the Topic Name, if necessary).

I have to say, I don't think I've ever used the phrase 'close if dupe'. I've always thought it was silly because if it was a 'dupe topic', the moderators would close it no matter if you told them to or not. You might as well just say 'fell free to moderate this post if it breaks any of BZP's rules', 'please close if this topic if it gets filled with spam', or 'please do your job as a moderator, if you feel like it'.

Well, some of that isn't as bad as close if dupe... sometimes the line is fuzzy as to where a topic belongs.

But I'm glad I've been able to inform the citizenry of BZP at large of the crisis. :)

We could just remove the forum entirely -- who needs it? These blogs work dandily enough for me. :P

But we might need to shut down the PMing system. Goodness knows how many dupes are sent through that. ;)
