More Fun Server Stuff (yawn)

Posting for my records mostly, but you might be interested...

The server's been running like a one-legged dispeptic sloth that's been dead for a month. It's been a source of much frustration - it vexed me mightily. So tonight I did one of my bi-weekly database backups, and checked around to make sure the files were all where they were supposed to be.

They weren't.

Not sure if this is the root cause of the server slowing down, but I discovered that the preferences file for the database was in the wrong directory. For some reason, it was changed, I don't know why. The database tries to find this prefs file in one of several known directories, for some reason it decided to switch the directory it was looking for.

Fortunately I have a backup of this prefs file, so I put it in the new directory and the server seems to be much speedier. Of course, it's nearly midnight on the east coast, but just before I did this (an hour ago) I saw the server crawl into its own bellybutton again and refuse to come out. So now after telling it to look somewhere else, it's going much better than before. I just hope this was the real cause of the problem.

But then again, I've been down this road far too many times to get my hopes up too much. Sigh.

Let's hope.

I wouldn't want to have 42 busy messeges in a row again, ending with "42 is the answer to Life, The Universe and Everything" again :P

Well, good luck Bink. I hope for the best, but prepare for the worst (You know what the worst is, what we already experienced only longer.) -Swert

I hope it stays good for a while. Thanks for fixing it! I was in the middle of my BBC voting when it stopped. Curse the server!

You know what they say the one millionth and third time is the charm.

Let us hope that all will work this time.

Is this one of those cases where the software gains "awareness" of itself and sets out to cause the destruction of all humanity?

Er, if not, then, here's hopeing you got that one particular problem fixed for now. Thanks for the update.

Don't try skydiving

(hey, that'd be a good server message) (ah, the irony)

Hey bink, You really really really really really (goes on for the next hour) really need a new server. This one is how should I put it. A peice of molded cheese in the dumpster that has never been emptied. Now I can make suggestions as to some of the better servers and the ones I have and my clients have said are very fast. If in fact you would like to know what these hosts are (cause I don't want to get into trouble posting them here) please PM me.

Finding a new server isn't an issue. Paying for one is. If you have a solution for that, by all means, please post here.

Ok so like I won't get into trouble? K Well yes I forgot to mention that these servers I have found are a combonation of price and performance. My favorite server and also the cheapest one of its kind I have found is located at http://www.mediatemple.net. Yes its the dedicated virtual. But this is top of the line even though its virtual. But that just makes it so much faster and better. Now don't get the virtual wrong you get complete root access to everthing on the server. It is the cheapest and fastest I have seen. To show how much of a workload it can take some of the top companies like sony, starbucks, sprint and such host their promotional websites there, which no doubt takes triple as many visitors as this place. Now you may not be conforatble with the virtual server fine... but the only thing that can compete with that is Dreamhost.net but they have been reported to be very slow. So I do not recomend them. But I have heard people who say they love um. So that is another choice. I haven't yet found anybody who competes with mediatemple. they have the best bang for the buck.

Bzp is paying over 200 dollars. But media temple's highest plan is 150... and it is 2 terabytes of bandwidth and enough storage. And (mt) isn't hype. I have used it for almost a year and my clients have said they really love this hosting company.

But they only go up to 1GB of RAM. We need more, a lot more. Plus the ability to spike bandwidth during peak usage (the so-called "95th percentile"). They also don't offer CPanel (which isn't optimal but I'm used to it) - they have Plesk instead, which I don't care for.

Also, I wasn't able to find hardware specs anywhere.

Not trying to dis your suggestion, I appreciate it. But I'm not seeing a compelling reason to switch hosting companies at this time. A lot of what we see during the lagtime is RAM-related, I think.

I never said they were a bad host. Just meant there are better choices for much less. It just wouldn't work for BZP's (huge) demands.

1 you can have as much ram as you would like. cause you can purchase more in 128mb increments for 19.95 a month.

2 I do not think your problem lies in how much ram you have.

now I searched around and found these specs on the servers: The physical servers that host every (dv) are carefully tuned and monitored HP ProLiant DL380 G4s, featuring dual 3.0 GHz Xeon Processors and RAID 5 SCSI drives.

Now you don't have to use plesk. you can log onto the linux distro and use command line if you prefer. personaly thats what I would do. You can use any kind of server management software.

One more thing is yes it can handle spike bandwidth periods. The cool thing about (dv) is that it alocates what resources you need and when so when you are having a slow day so say like only 1000 people only visited it that day then you would not give you as much resources. But when you are having an ultra good day with say 10,000 visitors that day then you would have much more resources. Another cool thing is that you aren't confined to one server. so when in times of need you are actualy pulling resources from multiple servers.

I am just trying to get bzp to a better server. Cause I really hate the busy messages.

I just updated the database prefs file, with what I hope are better settings. Let's see if that cuts down on the server messages (which were much better after I put the prefs file back in a couple of weeks ago).
