Silly pendulum

In other words: physics is fun, but sometimes the 'problems' we ought to solve at home can be a bit... well, entertaining at least. I think my favourite one so far must've been the pendulum clock in an elevator. How can it go wrong when the elevator is moving, I mean yes, I did the maths and I have it in front of my eyes in black and white... but hoooow. xD

Once I remember that this doesn't mean that time is going differently, but that the pendulum is being influenced by the various accelerations and forces at work (I won't go into detail now, would take too long) it all makes more sense, but still... it's weird how some things can be both absolutely logical and completely odd at the same time.

Love it. x3

EDIT: BTW, my blog just got a new category called "Science", which shall from now on be used for labelling all stuff related to maths, physics... and so on. ^^

I love Pendulums.

Have you ever seen what happens with a bunch of pendulum metronomes on a freely moving table? It's pretty cool.

Confounding, isn't it?

Indeed, indeed...

Yes I have :D

Wait, what?

I wanted to do physics but I suck at maths(so I chose that for A-Level :/) and took Bio for a science instead

Wait what as in...? :)

Thankfully maths is only a part of physics... and it's 'learnable' (if that's a word xD), really.

I meant wait, what? as in Im confused, but dont judge

Also learnable is underlined in red, but your asking the wrong person because I suck at English. In fact, I suck at everything apart from getting injured on my right hand side

What's even cooler is when you reduce the simple pendulum to a one-dimensional problem (since the physical situation only depends on the angle at which the pendulum deviates from vertical) and realize that Cartesian coordinates are a terrible choice for physical situations with angular symmetry.

And then there's quantum mechanics... :D

Hey, no problem, I was just trying to find out what confused you: the fact that the pendulum clock goes wrong once the elevator accelerates, whereas time stays the same, or if it was something different. I by no means intended to make fun of you or something, I was just wondering if you could specify your question so that I can answer it better. :)

And don't feel bad about yourself, your English is fine! =)

(Heh, right, learnable can't really be a word, but yesterday evening I was far too tired to check it xD)

Also, if it makes you feel any better, my English was pretty bad when I joined BZPower, too. It gets better over time. :) *pokes*

Cartesian coordinates seem to be a bad choice for ANY problem that involves at least SOME form of movement similar to rotation. >< I still hate polar coordinates, though.

Yay for quantum mechanics that I don't have to deal with right now because I only just got started with Physics. :P
