Since characters like Rinoa and Aerith were designed by Tetsuya Nomura, Amano drew variations of them.

Amano did the character artwork for FFs I-VI before Nomura took over for VII, VIII, X, and X-2. Can't remember the guy who did IX and XII.

I see, you're talking about the more gothic style art as opposed to the more anime looking art. Kinda like the style change from the GBA Castlevania's the two DS ones.
