Shadow's story begins a long time before the story of FFVI. He was originally a thief named Clyde Arrowny. He and his partner managed to rob trains. Their last escapade was on a train bound for Doma. On this train, they found a treasure worth 1 million Gil.
Tragically though, the duo was caught and attacked, Clyde had to leave his partner behind.
He eventually found himself in Thamasa, where he married and fathered a child. But he eventually left because of his tragic past. His dog Interceptor followed him.
He then donned an assasin's garb, and changed his name to Shadow. He also killed himself off emotionally.
Shadow is met in South Figaro, near Doma, Kohligen, and the Floating Continent, in the World of Balance that is.
First time, in Doma, he joins the party for a while, it is free. 2nd time, in Kohligen, though costs 3000 Gil. The Floating Continent is free though.
Shadow is assumed to be dead, but only if the party didn't wait for him on the Floating Continent. In that case though, he is found in the cave on the Veldt, gravely wounded. There the party must fight the Behemoth King to save Shadow.
Then the party takes him to Thamasa to heal, where he has a dream about his last day in Thamasa.
He then leaves for the Dragon's Neck Arena to hone his skills.
He can then permanently join if a party member bets the Ichigeki knife.
His ending is also very sad.
Shadow's throw command makes Shadow throw weapons and scrolls.
