To The Edge Of The World And Back

OK, so I'm back, and I lied. I was and did not go to the West Coast of Tasmania. My apologies. Only the North-West.

Anyway, it was certainly enlightening. We stayed in the little town of Stanley, which resides underneath a large monolithic structure jutting out to sea known as The Nut. You can (and I did) travel to the top of The Nut and see everything in every direction and get a glorious view of the Bass Strait. But we (ma famile) did not come to look at the Nut, but we were pleased we did.

We went to Tassie's own Swamp of Secrets. Minus the Secrets. Or really the swamp. It's called Dismal Swamp, but it's hardly a swamp, as the water sinks right into the soil. It's very damp and dark, but it's absolutely beautiful. The last surviving forest of Blackwood trees (or something) left in Tasmania, and the trees are just so grand. I'm glad Forestry Tasmania agreed to save this place of wonder. Hard time taking pictures though, cause of the darkness. Flash on and everything was illuminated in the wrong way, flash off and you don't get the wonderful contrast of light.

But the stand out for me was Arthur River. Wouldn't seem to mean much to you, but at a particular point on that river, in front of you is an endless mass of water going to the west, and it is utterly uninterrupted until South America. It is the biggest distance of uninterrupted water in the whole world, and is aptly named the Edge of the World. The wind and surf is absolutely incredible, and it also feels quite spiritual in a way, thinking that there is nothing between you and the eastern side of Argentina. It's hard to describe, but it's awe inspiring. Despite my expectations of it being ruined by the fact Arthur River isn't really isolated from society. But yeah. I may upload some pics later, but it's great.

So yes, blog update. I had been listening to Yes the day before I saw the Edge of the World, so I thought it was appropriate to change the name of the blog to one of my favourite epic songs. FYI, the blog opening pic is the Edge of the World, with poem that you can find on a plaque there. The Category buttons are from a little grove on the top of The Nut. The Personal Pic is me again at the Edge of the World. The BS01 spotlight is a shot from the trees at Dismal Swamp. The RBZPotW banner is also from DS, one of the many artworks there, as well as for BDH. Crystal Clear is a picture of the water late in the day near Stanley, and the LotM banner is a picture of the sun through fog on the way up to the North-West region, where the fog was thick and the sun was like a disk in the sky. It was quite eerie. Anyway, I might post some pics later. But for now...yeah, it was great.

So yes I had fun. Hope you guys are enjoying your summer, I'm certainly enjoying my winter so far.

Sounds good. I'm stuck with boring, drought-stricken Canberra... :(

At least Gippsland had a nice rainforest bit to it. Pity about the school I went to...
