And Tragically Violence

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.

Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.

"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.

In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.

Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.

New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment.

I feel bad with people with names like that, although at some of them I did laugh a bit 'cause I thought they were ridiculous.

GIVE PEOPLE NORMAL NAMES

What exactly is a normal name? What may be normal to you may not be normal for another person. My name isn't normal.

A normal name is a name that has no real meaning in modern day English (like John or Fred) or is a also month (April).

I think.

What about Summer? D=

... or Abdul?

If I had a son, I'd name it Elan Sleazebaggano.

This the first reason why I should probably never have children (number two on the list is my referring to the kid as 'it' in that sentence). :P

to lazy to quote everyone~

I don't mind weird names like Seasons, Months or even "Apple". Some of them are just plain cute. Alot of names originated with having a meanings to give character to a person. Alot of Native American, African and Japanese names actually have meanings, so why is that wrong in English? Of course have some class about it.

You give your child a name in hopes that one day s/he will live up to it. If you name your child "pooforbrains," you honestly don't have high expectations for your child's future, and don't care about the meaningless ridicule the child will have to endure their whole life.

PS. My name, Meaghan, means "pearl" in hebrew. Even so-called normal names have meanings.

Lets have a baby and name it Sephiroth.

Omi officially has the best gf ever.

Agreed.

...Do embarrassing initials count? If so I think I can file to have my middle name changed in new Zealand. :P

In seriousness though, all I can say is wow.

...But what kind of drunk imbecile names their child "Keenan Got Lucy And Sex Fruit"?

And, although it isn't as weird as the above, what exactly does "Shilo" mean? Your the only Shilo I know of, so it can't be that common, so I figure it probably means something.

Also, if you guys do have a child and name it Sephiroth, I will send you each $500 in-cash out of shock, awe and awesomeness.

If you do, please dress them up as Sephiroth one Halloween and take a picture.

I must say that I do enjoy exotic names, just don't entirely enjoy it when people are named with an insult, or other unpleasent things.

I read a book once that had officially made me believe that there is no such thing as normal because what is normal in your eyes isn't necessarily normal in someone else's eyes.

-Even though my name is considered normal, I have several thousand nicknames, and yes I am called Spink sometimes in real life.

I am not going to name my kid Cloud. None of my kids will be FF based or even Anime based.

Yes.

And I think it is one of the most stupidest things to name your kid after something you like.
