Greatest Jazz Composer Of Today

I'm going to arbitrarily proclaim Larry Barton to be the best jazz ensemble composer of recent times. Most of his earliest work was published in the early '90s.

Among some of his greatest songs are Area 51, Panic Button!, and Abracadabra (not to be confused with that of Frank Ticheli).

And a lot of the other recent jazz stuff that I've listened to stinks. :P

I really should listen to more jazz other then the classic 50's and 60's stuff. I might take your arbitrary suggestion. And there still is some good quality recent jazz, like the best stuff from the SF Collective ( Kenny G, however, I vote to have him arrested on the charges of crimes against humanity).

I forgot to mention: Area 51 and Panic Button are really rock, not jazz. :P But they're written for jazz ensemble, of course.

(Of course, they have certain elements that make them sound closer to jazz too, as far as chromatic stuff goes, etc.)

I'm taking Jazz/Blues Improv as a class. :o
Alas, I wish I had enough extra space in my schedule to take one of the more relaxed non-band (and non-chorus) music classes at my school. I wouldn't mind taking music theory.

Well, as far as jazz music goes, I know of Vince Guiraldi (I just totally messed up his name, I know it...), and Louis Armstrong. Not much, I know, but they're good.
