So I finally have enough to get a laptop. And I, knowing nothing about Pentium Duo processors, DDR2 667MHz, etc... :P need help. I've got my eyes on a Dell Inspiron (Ruby Red) from Best Buy. I have limited knowledge, so I compared the one from the Dell website (With my specifications) and the one from Best Buy, and the one from BB came out almost $200 cheaper with more extra stuff than I had origianlly wanted. :D Let's see... It's got these specs:

  • 3GB DDR2 memory for multitasking power, expandable to 4GB
  • Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support records up to 8.5GB of data or 4 hours of video using compatible media
  • The next-generation Intel® Core™2 Duo processor is based on the innovative Intel® Core™ microarchitecture, so it runs faster and is more energy-efficient for cooler, quieter operation
  • 15.4" XGA widescreen display with TrueLife technology and 1280 x 800 resolution
  • 250GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
  • Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 integrated graphics with up to 256MB graphics memory as allocated by Windows Vista; Intel® High-Definition 2.0 audio; S-video output
  • Top-side media buttons to easily play, pause, stop, fast-forward and rewind at the touch of a button
  • Built-in 2.0-megapixel webcam to liven up Internet chat, instant messaging and blogs with color photos and video
  • 8-in-1 digital media reader supports Secure Digital, Secure Digital High Density, Secure Digital High Capacity, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD-Picture Card and SDIO formats
  • IEEE 1394 (FireWire) interface and 4 high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast digital video, audio and data transfer
  • Built-in Dell 1395 wireless networking mini-card (802.11b/g); Dell's advanced antenna design features 3 antennas to find and connect to networks with ease, delivering enhanced wireless reception; standard Wi-Fi Catcher to quickly locate wireless hotspots
  • Integrated 10/100 Ethernet network card; 56 Kbps modem
  • Ruby red finish adds a unique look to the laptop case

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium operating system with Service Pack 1 (SP1) preinstalled; software package included with Microsoft Works 9 and Roxio Creator Basic

So my question for you laptop experts out there is... Is this any good?

What sort of activities to you intend for this laptop? Are you looking for something that will be powerful enough for games? Maybe just something for moderate video editing? Just internet? Etc.

What I really wish is that they would include a complete list of software that comes pre-installed on these things.

One thing I will say is that gaming/graphics cards are probably the biggest things that stump me when it comes to computer hardware.

But, while I wouldn't necessarily consider myself an "expert" on computers, I like to think of myself as . . . intermediate? :P I never was good at rating my own skills.

Anyways, do you plan on using a pre-installed movie program like Windows Movie Maker? Or do you use some other form of video editing software? From looking at your videos I cant' really tell, though it doesn't look too terribly complicated.

All-in-all, it looks like a pretty solid laptop. The only reason I can see that it wouldn't be able to handle whatever software you'd use is if they doesn't work on Vista or if they simply demand more than the specs give. As far as games, like I alluded to before, I really couldn't tell you, though it doesn't look like it'd be too bad. I'd need more info for that though.

But to get to the point, you asked, "Is this any good?" From what I've been told, Dells are supposed to be decent. Just don't ever buy an eMachine. But yeah, looks good. Of course, don't take my word for it. That way, I can't be held liable for anything. :P

Oh, just in case you're bored, this is the laptop I have. :P Be sure to click on "More Images".

Now, if you'll excuse me, I just got an e-mail from StarWars.com telling me I can watch episodes of "The Clone Wars" online. I'm gonna check it out. :D

Yep, me too.

Yes, I use WMM for my movies. I'm pretty sure it comes with that, but if not I can just download it.

XD

Ooh... NICE laptop. I love the side view. That thing looks crazy, man! O_O

Well, thanks Takuma! I've made my decision! ^_^
