What I don't get is why the character we now know as the Arbiter (He wasn't the Arbiter back then) has purple fancy armor in the novel and why we see him wearing gold combat armor in the starting cinematic of Halo 2. Kind of strange, but something I've wondered about.

He WAS the Supreme Commander and Leader of the Fleet of Particular Justice, before he was given the Mark of Shame and later donned the suit of the Arbiter, automatically becoming one.
