92% Of Teens

The statistic "92% of teens listen to rap, and 8% listen to other stuff" is incorrect, as not 100% of teens listen to music at all.

Yup.

Was there ever any doubt that the statistic was complete nonsense? It never states who conducted this study, or why rap isn't "real music" (since the typical phrasing states that only the other 8% is this). It's just a fabrication by online folks who want to pretend that they're some noble minority standing against a sea of depravity, and that anyone who disagrees with them is part of that "sea".

I've always respected rap, if not rappers, for being a legitimate musical genre. After all, several cultures have music which is little more than chanting, yet it is just as much "real music" as country, metal, or any other genre. As for the often inappropriate or unpleasant themes of rap, most of them are shared by at least one other genre-- I've heard country songs that romanticize domestic violence, rock songs which romanticize several varieties of drug abuse, and songs of various genres which express sexist and immoral states-of-mind. Distinctions between rap and other genres are many, but reasons it is somehow less worthy of being called music are non-existent.

If you'll notice, my sig features an imitation of this "false statistic" and the mindset behind it-- only the mindset expressed in my sig is one most rational people recognized as nonsense several years ago.

And XCCJ, why would the "mainstream media" dislike that statistic? It's certainly not saying anything bad-- unless you are one who believes the media's job is to propogate lies. In which case I would be extremely offended, coming from a family with great ties to the press and strong belief in its core values.

A percentage of teens listen to an unspecified genre of music. If you're part of the '100 minus percentage' percentage that listen to anything else, each to his own, I guess.

Dude, I wasn't serious. This blog entry was a joke.

Aanchir just said pretty much anything that I would bother to say. I know this is a joke, but still. It's worth saying.

Plus the whole fact that the statistic never really specifies which teens and what counts as "listening to rap". Would I count, since I listen mostly to "real" music, whatever that's supposed to be, but still enjoy a little bit of rap sometimes? Or would it have to be more devoted than that? Teens where? In America? Everywhere? Between what ages? Moved on from what?

I mean, if you mean all American teens who have ever heard a rap song anywhere in their entire lives? Then I suppose that the percentage would make sense, I mean, from cars playing loud music, parties, guys with boom boxes and radios in stores and all. But it wouldn't give them the bizarre worthless bragging rights.

92% of people have moved on from Gregorian chants. If you are part of the 8% that still listens to real music, copy and paste this into your sig.

92% of all teenagers claim they're in the 8% that hasn't moved on to rap.

If you are part of the 0% that still uses real math, copy and paste this into your sig.

163% of BZP´ers are very easily getting tired of such statistics. <_<

If you´re one of the 20% who´s me, you´re awesome! :happydance:

Oh, and BTW, less than a percent of teens do not listen to music at all, I guess... :sly:
