Elizabeth And The Catapult

So this evening for the last few hours I've been at my college's radio station doing my radio show. When I'm picking music off the shelves, I tend to gravitate toward CDs that have interesting album artwork or an interesting band name (but usually I tend to just grab things at random), and then I'll go and preview some of the songs to see if the music is something that catches my ear. This type of selection sometimes pays off for me and find a good CD with some good songs and sometimes it doesn't.

Sometimes, though there's just something awesome. Today I found this band called Elizabeth and the Catapult, and I originally just grabbed it because I thought the album cover was adorable, but when I previewed the first song "Momma's Boy" I was just like "Wow!". That song has a sort of quirky, sassy, in-your-face-stop-using-me-as-your-crutch tweak to it, and I really love songs like that. The rest of the album is quite good as well, though some of the songs are a bit slower in comparison to "Momma's Boy" but they quite nice and still have little quirks to them that make them stand out, including a really nice cover of Leonard Cohen's song "Everybody Knows".

Then, I pulled this other album from a band called Fever Ray (because once again, I though the album cover was neat) and lo and behold, the second song I preview called, "When I Grow Up", is one that my friend sent me a link to a few days before because he was like "The video for this is bizarre, but it's kind of awesome!" and it turned out quite true to his words, with another friend describing it as "backyard tribalism". I got back from my show, and I've been listening to the rest of the album online, and it definitely has a synthetic and tribal feeling to it, but I find it really cool as it's just so different.

I think my favourite part of this is just how opposite in styles these two bands are, but I find their music to be equally awesome. I love being a dj. It's so fun.

Oh, and I cut up my leg when I did a crazy lunge/dive while playing ultimate medicine ball today with the track team during our workout. Like, imagine playing ultimate frisbee but instead you've got a 12-pound ball being throw (more like heaved) through the air. Kind of like Quidditch with only the bludgers. It looks a bit looks like an equal sign right now, and if it ends up as a scar, it would rank up there in coolness factor with the scar on my left elbow that kind of looks like Sweden.

(and 299 days until BrickFair!!)

Wow! Being a DJ sounds fun!

That games sounds like something similar to a book I read in school, but that I can't remember the name of either...
