Avatar was a great movie. I think the word 'beautiful' best describes this colorful and lively film. Almost instantly you are drawn into the environments of Pandora as Jake Sully test-drives his avatar for the first time.
Yes, the CGI was amazing. At certain points where action sequences would pick up, you could notice the computer animation, but during dialogue scenes I was blown away. I think the part that I most noticed where the eyes of the Omatiyaca (I think that's what they're called). Eyes have been notorious for being the worst to animate in movies and video game, but Avatar did a great job of really making them seem alive and real.
The action sequences were astonishing too. Many movies have followed the popular "shaky cam" approach, but Avatar, I feel, took a cue from video game cut scenes and did the whole dramatic "slow-mo" shots in quite a few places.
However, I saw the movie in 2D, so I think I missed out on a whole other aspect of the film. Hopefully I can convince my parents that the movie was good enough, and that they should pay to take my family and I to see it in 3D.
Absolutely gorgeous environments and setting, amazing CGI, dramatic battles, and a satisfying (even if it was a bit predictable) storyline all blend together to make Avatar the last must-see film of 2009.
