Answer: The French rigged crooked pictures with explosives so that when the Germans came into the houses and straightened them, they would detonate. The Germans, as you said, had a reputation for being neat, and couldn't stand the sight of crooked pictures.

 

Rules:

Puzzle: A factory manager gets a tip that the company chairman is on his way to pay a surprise visit. The manager orders the staff to clean the factory, clear out all the trash, and hide it away, but the chairman wasn't impressed. Why not?
