Xmas Update And Bzp Backup

Binkmeister

I think this is the longest I've gone between blog postings, oops...

Been busy, real busy. Got myself a new job in early November, been slaving away at that, although last week hasn't been as bad. Worked 77 hours the week before, though.

And there's been a lot of LEGO-related stuff going on too, of course. I have fun pictures of a couple of things.

First, over the last week I've been incrementally backing up the full BZPower machine, and finally downloaded all the relevant content to my new computer. Then I burned a backup DVD, and since my new comp has nifty "LightScribe" capabilities, I just had to burn a cool Hapori Tohu image onto it. It came out extremely cool!

UPDATE: Would you buy this disk? Vote in a poll!

That's 4.1GB of your favorite Bionicle fan site in my hand, database included.

Another fun thing I did today was fill up one of my holiday gift boxes at the LEGO store. (I got three boxes, gave one away as a gift.) You can fit a surprising amount into a 4.5 x 3.5 x 3.5" box. Took 90 minutes to pack it, but as you can see below, it was worth it. I was curious, and counted the elements.

IPB Image

327x 1x2 White Tiles

216x 1x4 Dark Bley Gray Brick with Groove

109x 1x2 Bley Hinge (male)

109x 1x2 Bley Hinge (female)

32x 2x8 Bley Plates

44x 2x4 White Plates

40x 1x2 Transparent Bricks (no tube)

34x 2x3 Red Plates

Total: 911 pieces

Being even more curious, I looked on BrickLink to price them out. At absolute minimum price, the box contains $20 worth of brick. At a more reasonable median price, it's worth at least $46. The dark blay 1x4 bricks with groove are really rare, at 23 cents each. Duh, they're dark gray, not bley...

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus!

I still can't believe HT is now a DVD Image.

Oh yeah, everything else is great too :P But how awesome is Hapori Tohu on a DVD?

Nice work with the LightScribe. The CD is really nice looking that way, and it's always very nice to know that our favorite Bionicle fansite is backed up (for security reasons and so we know that waiting for the board to be online is a serious wait, even though I trust you), and can be compacted onto a CD!

Nice work packing the gift box as well. Though I'm surprised it took you half an hour, the deal seems really great as I've once experienced at the nearest Lego store (11 hours away from here). I can understand why you got all the grooved bricks as well; they're very useful.

Have fun with the bricks, Bink (I can already tell you're also a brickmeiser :P ) and merry Christmas!

Thanks, Than. I must have misread. Either way, I'm surprised it took that long.

Pick a brick's always awesome. Or whatever you used. I hope you put the bricks together, to save room Of course! You've been doing this for a while.

So, how did you exactly get one of these boxes? Is it like Pick a brick? What does one box cost?

And good job on backing up BZP. You should probably burn that for Rex and Big D, just to be safe. (And then I'll intercept their mail and get it myself!) Anyway, it was a great idea, and the CD looks awesome.

Merry Christmas!

The box was a promo from LEGO stores - if you bought $50 or more in the store between Nov. 1 and Dec. 24th, you received an empty box, which you could then fill (for free) from the PaB wall any time between Dec. 26th - March 1, 2007. Like I could wait that long. I managed to plan my shopping trips to buy stuff in increments of $50, so I got not only a box each time, but also two loyalty card stamps :) - and I did that three times. My wife bought a bunch of stuff the weekend before Christmas, but they'd already run out of boxes so she didn't get me another one.

I filled the second box last night, mostly dark bley 6x6 plates and other plates (planning a new MOC for Stargate's Prometheus), as well as a bunch more white 1x2 tiles. The third box I gave to my friend Steve as a Christmas present.

But now I've got a $50 gift card that needs to be spent. I was thinking either more PaB, or a Vikings Chess set.

Seeing the Prometheus MOCed would be awesome. Just put in next to your Stargate! (I've always wanted to see a Puddle Jumper MOCed, though. Wanna try that sometime?)

I got the Viking Chess for Christmas. It's really cool. I just don't have many people to play with, so decide if you want it to play with it, or just to have it around. I'm probably going to use the minifigs (24!) for parts if it just sits around looking pretty for too long.

And as for the CD, I hope you can get the pic database on there.

...

(My friend apparently got 3 of those boxes when he got the NXT, so he decided to give me one! Can't wait!)

Ditto here, I want a CD!

I'd only have to go online to update. That's a feature you could think about btw. You could submit an RSS feed on things that have been changed since date X and a person could only be allowed to download a new version ever-so-often, to reduce server loads.
