Baseblog - Opening Night Edition

Opening night is upon us in the Major League Baseball season! The Yankees are playing the Red Sox - the Sox mounted a comeback, the Yankees looked like they have it under control, and now the Sox are tied up again. Beckett didn't look good out there, and CC didn't look much better when he was taken out. I am surprised that the game is so high-scoring.

In other baseball news:

  • Coco Crisp breaks pinkie - Remember, kids: never slide headfirst into second. Or third. Or home. Or first.
  • Cliff Lee on DL with strain - Maybe this is why the Phillies got rid of him - not only to get Halladay, but also because they saw these problems coming.
  • Rays may have trouble in bullpen - With JP Howell out, the Rays' bullpen will be much more interesting. He was one of their best guys in the pen, and this can only spell trouble for them.

also LewaLew you get the BaseBlog one day early :D

LL is happy. :D

I doubt that the Phillies saw anything coming with Cliff. The simple idea of having Halladay on your team is golden. Even worth getting rid of Cliff Lee.

Also, sliding into home probably wouldn't make that much of a difference, because home plate is flat.

And the Rays aren't the only team that should worry about their bullpen. My team, the Cubs, have a lot to worry about with Marmol's control. The Yankees' bullpen seems to also have some trouble, since Chan Ho Park and that other fella couldn't keep the Red Sox from taking the lead. After all, you can't have Rivera get the save if you already gave up the lead.

:???:

What is this I don't even...

Words are meaningless to me. (We don't play Baseball here. I still can't believe one of America's favorite sports is a glorified version of Rounders though.) Have a good game of footy :P

You could get stepped on.

As if you couldn't by sliding feet-first? :P

Hands hurt worse, plus more bones so they heal slower.

That's why I always challenge anyone who likes baseball to name three people on the current Pirates roster. So far no one has been able to do it.

Yeah, but what about crashing into the boards? :P

You need to walk on feet. I had my ankle sprained when a 300 pound guy crushed my leg.

The Cubs game was pitiful. Zambrano and the Braves' pitcher were each given an unreasonably small strike zone from the umpire, and those bloop singles in the first should have been left to Byrd and the infielders should have stayed in the infield. It didn't help that the umpires couldn't spot the Braves' outfielder dropping the ball, or that Samardzija was brought into the game. If it were up to me, I'd have put in John Grabow, a good, reliable reliever who we got at the deadline from the Pirates.

Speaking of Pirates, umm...

McCutchen... Kevin Hart... and...

I can't bring a third to mind.

Hope you don't mind me saying this, but I don't think Huntington's a very good GM.

Huntington is nothing. See Jim Hendry.

At least he had the sense to get rid of Milton Bradley. If Huntington had been in charge he probably would have given him an extension.
