Eragon:

Arpy

The story of a young farm boy who lives with his aunt and uncle out in the boonies in a place under the control of an evil emperor who overthrew an ancient order of magically powered peacekeepers with the help of a protege who turned evil. Around the same time he returns home after being away for a short time to find that his aunt and uncle have been killed by agents of the emperor, he meets an old hermit who moved out there to watch over him as he grew up, learns of his membership in said ancient order and possession of magical powers, and is given a sword that was once his father's. He and the old man travel forth, with the man training the boy in the use of his powers, and they soon join up with a mysterious rogue. After the old hermit guy dies and they rescue a beautiful princess from one of the empire's strongholds, they reach the hidden base of the rebellion against the evil empire. Then the empire's army discovers the base, there's a huge battle, and the farm boy saves the day.

Oh, and then in the next installment it turns out that that the last remaining member of the old order of magic-users lives in a huge forest, so the farm boy seeks him out for further training! Also, a startling revelation or two is made about his parentage.

Haven't seen that before.

Book 1 is predictable and cliché, but entertaning.

Book 2 is boring, with long descriptions about insignificant things.

Book 3 is worse than Book 2, but at least it deviates (slightly) from the Star Wars plotline it's been following.

Unfortunately I did not realize the books were terrible until I finished the second one. =/

Yeah, I was kinda slow.

Loved 1. Hated 2. It was boring and long. Boring training in the stupid boring elf place with stupid boring elves.

Number three though, that changes everything.

Movie = fail.

The books are highly derivative, yes, but Paolini's genius is that it occured to him that two of the world's greatest stories could be combined in a cool way.

It's really surpising that it took twenty years for someone to think of that.

Also, yeah, Brisingr really deviates from the template. Which is good.

I rather like the Inheritance Cycle.

And lol, Spink, that's how I felt about Twilight. Still do.

Oh, and what's wrong with long descriptions? Or long areas without any real action to them? Adds some nice realism, IMO.

Then again, this is coming from the guy who's favorite book is basically a history book about Elves written in a flowery style. (Silmarrillion)

He managed to rip off both SW and LotR at the same time! Plus, probably some other things too. I think it's good work from a 15 year old... I think it's kinda lame as a series.

*only read first book because somebody gave it to him as a present because they grabbed it at the last minute off the new release shelf*

Eragon is cliched yet fun. When I first read it (2005) thought Eldest was great but now am more iffy. Brisinger is the best (yay no Star Wars plot!) because it sort of merges the two into a pretty good formula.

Also even though I read Eragon and Eldest before I saw Star Wars (maybe that's why it dosn't bug me so much) I thought that the Urgals insted of looking like Orcs looked like Chewbaca, with horns.

Errie councidence is errie...

I don't think I ever got through the first chapter, even. It was just... blah. Like, you know? *makes vague, wavy hand gestures* Yeah.
