4 Movies!

Been watching some movies recently!

Exam: Kind of straightforward, but a thriller nonetheless. Though almost a waste of time, I kept thinking about it after viewing, realizing the events that occurred and what it all meant. Ho hum. Not a bad choice, because you could have chosen...

2001: A Space Odyssey: What a waste of time. I watched it so I could understand the "Open the pod bay doors, HAL" references. I was better off just sticking to what I already knew. Nothing happened. Yeah, sure, there was the whole "I can't let you do that, Dave" thing, but the movie does not revolve around that. I can not really tell you what it does revolve around. Oh look humans in space. Oh look we found a big black rectangle-box but will not tell anyone anything about it. Finally about an hour in there's the whole thing with HAL, and then the final half hour is just like "what is happening it looks like they went into Ludicrous Speed" and then bam, meh, what. Pointless, I tell you. Might as well see...

The Sorcerer's Apprentice: This movie is just another reason why you should not listen to movie reviews. It has not gotten the best of reviews, but I can say that I think this movie deserves more credit than it has been given. Sure, it is a little cheesy and predictable at times, but it was also more than just "good." Or it was "good." Better than "ok" and "meh." My siblings and mom also enjoyed it, but we also like Nicholas Cage and National Treasure, so in the end I guess it depends on your tastes. (Also: Alfred Molina!) It was a fun and enjoyable movie though. However, best of all is...

Despicable Me: Hilarious! I had high expectations for this film, and it exceeded those. :o It get's ranked #2 in my book of summer movies (Inception, though I have not seen it yet, will get #1, and I think A-Team (and Iron Man 2?) get #3). I was cracking up the entire time. Sure, you saw some funny stuff in the trailer, but there was more in the movie, do not worry. The minions of course have a ton of antics, but so do the girls and Gru, and everyone else. It's fun. Easily one of my favorite movies. Go watch it now.

Yeah, couldn't get into 2001 either... I thought the part on the space ship was cool, but that was only, like... a quarter of the movie. The rest was like a drug trip. But a really boring one.

Apparently it's mindblowingly awesome if you're a genius or a super artist or something. Honestly I don't care enough to figure it out.

Sorcerer's Apprentice has Cage in it so I won't be seeing it. :P

2001: A Space Odyssey is great! It's about higher powers in the universe and their influence on man's evolution. The music is so stunning and really takes center stage in its use to tell the story. I'm sorry you couldn't appreciate it.

Yeah, I watched 2001 and was pretty much bored out of my mind. I think you might have to watch it the right way.

You have to be able to appreciate art in order to appreciate 2001, basically. It's not some dumb sci-fi flick. It's real cinema. Unfortunately a lot of people just hear 'oh, there's an evil computer that kills people' and just completely miss the point of the film, or go see it expecting it to be some pulp sci-fi drivel. :(

They certainly didn't make that clear.

At all.

After reading a couple things about it I get what it was trying to do more, still doesn't mean I liked it. It seemed more like a drug trip than anything else... Especially the end, which I still cannot comprehend. I guess I'm just too stupid to appreciate "real cinema" and "art", as Smeag said. And I'm totally okay with that. I'd rather watch something that makes sense. :P

I'm not going to be a pretentious "2001: ASO is the best movie ever you suck for not liking it blah blah blah" snob. I did not either enjoy or understand the movie the first time I watched it. After some thoughts and half an hour contemplating the film, I came to realize what it was all about, how much relies on art and music in the film, how cerebral a movie it is, and, most importantly, what the ending actually means. While the drug-trip color sequence doesn't make much sense, and certainly could've been shorter, the sequence where he sees future versions of himself before becoming one represents that he's seeing infinity. The star fetus-god thing doesn't really make much sense, but is still very dramatic.

Also: Never try to understand the sequels. While Stanley Kubrick is a great director, 2001 is a movie best seen as standalone.

My favorite part of Despicable Me was when Vector used a squid launcher. I almost had a fanboy attack, right there in theater. But yeah, great movie.

I read the book of 2001 and I didn't quite get it. Gonna reread it before summer's over, though.

Toy Story 3 isn't in your top 3 summer movies?

I can only assume that's because you haven't seen it yet...RIGHT?

Yes I have seen TS3. But no it did not do it for me like Despicable Me did, or even some of the more recent Pixar movies (which are not sequels, probably important).

It was good, sure, but Despicable Me has hilarious and awesome.
