I think one thing that you could do is make this blog less bland. The bare-bones blog design when you first start a blog is very plain and not extremely interesting to look at. Hence, most members go and decorate it some way or another, whether with a certain colour theme, a favourite book, a favourite character, etc. The sky's the limit on this, so it could be worth a shot!
