The New Sense

Looks amazing. Sense didn't use to be this awesome. Cached maps, skins, remote wipe, and more!

New phones!

Desire Z: Qwerty 'slider', 3.7-inch, 800MHz Snapdragon with awesome GPU, and the new Sense.

Desire HD: 4.3-inch, 1GHz Snapdragon with awesome GPU, and the new Sense.

I want the Desire Z. It'd replace my Legend, the Galaxy S would be the other one. Which is something else I don't have.

And a Galaxy Tab. Too much to want, no money!

You know, the thing about smartphones is that as soon as you buy the brand-new model the next one comes out that makes your recently-bought one outdated. :P

If I'd had bought the Galaxy S when it came out, in the middle of the year, it would still be in date.

The problem is the two year contracts. After two years the phone's useless.

It all depends which phone you buy - the first of a new chip architecture is usually the safest bet. The Nexus One and Desire are still good, from January and May, respectively. They were among the first Snapdragon phones.

And this happens around once ever 18 months, in happy conjunction with Moore's Law.

I'm going hold out for the next 'superphone' that HTC cranks out. It's rumored to possess 3.0 Gingerbread, a 2 gigahertz processor, 11 megapixel camera, 4.3 inch screen, and so much more epicness.

Supposedly it's going be out this Christmas.

Christmas? I'd expect a 2GHz processor to arrive in... January 2012 I think. Moore's Law, remember?

I doubt there'll be new superphones from HTC until the next Mobile World Congress, in March. There's only two months between October and Christmas, after all, and that's hardly any time for the Desire family to die.

Those specs are pretty impressive, though. If it packs a 2GHz processor I'd expect battery life to be short, or the phone will be too thick. A Snapdragon's more likely, but they already have a 4.3-inch snapdragon. And an 11MP camera is overkill, just like Nokia's 14MP N8 camera. The higher megapixels on the same size sensor would decrease quality. See the Droid Incredible vs Nexus One camera for example. Nexus took better quality pictures, but it was 5MP versus 8 in the same sensor size. The Z and HD will compare quite well, similar sensor size. I'd expect Legend-quality photos from them, they look similar sizes relative to MP.

EDIT: On the Gingerbread part, HTC won't have time to Sense Gingerbread up. It's getting announced supposedly mid-december. They didn't Sense up Froyo until a couple of months after it was announced (Desire got Froyo mid-July, it was announced mid-May)

And Sense would need a big update - it already got a big update twice this year. Probably not gunna happen. And the new phones at Mobile World Congress will pack 1.2GHz dual-core at the highest.

~Ah, but Motorola has already promised a 2 gigahertz phone from them before the year is up; they aren't ones for breaking their promises, though it'll probably be a Hummingbird processor as Snapdragon is working on 1.2 dual cores at the moment.

~Perhaps, perhaps, seeing as Gingerbread isn't due until November.

~I agree

Hummingbird is Samsung's name for their chip with an integrated GPU - Apple uses the same chip sans GPU and calls it the A4, Motorola uses the same chip sans GPU and calls it OMAP, I think. I don't think Motorola will be the first to release a 2GHz phone is Samsung is making the chip. So maybe the Galaxy S2 rumours I posted a while ago were true after all. Samsung is an excellent hardware maker, after all.

Qualcomm is the chip maker for Snapdragon, and it'll probably be called Scorpion (the 1.2GHz dual-core processor)

EDIT: On their promises: When did they make these promises before? I've not heard any promises from them apart from that rumour. Also, I wouldn't buy a Motorola phone anyway, not with the whole eFuse issue. I'm big on custom ROMs and root access, if you hadn't noticed :P
