It means you either got a PM and didn't respond or you deleted a PM without looking at it. I think

I once got -2 new messages. Doesn't that mean the same as 2 old messages? But you can fix it by sending PMs to yourself.

I saw a topic about this here while back that Nusua made. I've never had it happen to me personally, but then again I don't clean out my PMs often enough for it to.
