Owch!

I was supposed to get my braces off months ago. The right side is fine, but the left side isn't totally done, but the doctors said they can't totally fix that side to begin with! It's fine as it is, I say! Furthermore, they gave me rubber bands to wear for the last couple months to correct that side and it never budged. Soooo... what's the solution? Give up? Nooooo.

They give me a huge spring in my mouth. And it can't be removed.

And it hurts.

And will obstruct my eating.

It's like a pair of heavy duty rubber bands perma-placed in one location in the jaw.

Raaargh.

Aww dango. Man I hope they get that thing out of you asap. There was a guy back in school who got the rubber-bands. The positive side is you can go around and pretend to be Jaws from James Bond ^^

Like a piston in your mouth?

Yes.

Funnily enough, it broke the bracket it was anchored off, and with my trusty Leatherman, I was able to remove the spring. I think I'll wait a bit before calling the doc just to burn time between now and my next scheduled appointment in January.

You'll have to wear a retainer after this....

I stopped wearing mine and my teeth went back after 2 yrs of being in a different direction. So my assumption is that my teeth aren't fixable. I don't think they look that bad though. :P

Those permanent retainers are horrid. The one I wore had a miniature crank that had to be drawn down every night pushing my back teeth apart. And of course the real pain is, as you mentioned, that it obstructs eating and all kinds of food debris gets caught up in the device.
