Funnily enough, it broke the bracket it was anchored off, and with my trusty Leatherman, I was able to remove the spring. I think I'll wait a bit before calling the doc just to burn time between now and my next scheduled appointment in January.

You'll have to wear a retainer after this....

I stopped wearing mine and my teeth went back after 2 yrs of being in a different direction. So my assumption is that my teeth aren't fixable. I don't think they look that bad though.

Those permanent retainers are horrid. The one I wore had a miniature crank that had to be drawn down every night pushing my back teeth apart. And of course the real pain is, as you mentioned, that it obstructs eating and all kinds of food debris gets caught up in the device.
