Thoughts on Independence Day: Resurgence

Toa Smoke Monster

I saw this movie last week, but I haven't had a chance to post my thoughts on it until now. I'm putting them in spoiler tags, so I don't spoil anything for those who haven't seen it yet and want to. So don't read any further if you don't want to be spoiled.

1. One of the things that I thought was cool about the movie was the fact that the technology from the aliens from the first movie had been combined with that of human technology. It's something that would've happened if the first Independence Day film actually happened in real life, and I thought it was cool that it was done here. And this leads to some cool things with said tech, and having a base on the moon for example.

2. The actors and actresses, both from the first movie and the newcomers, do a good job with their roles. Aside from Jeff Goldblum's character though, none of them really standout IMO. In fact, the movie probably could've edited out some of them and not be any different.

3. This movie doesn't have the best story ever written, but I doubt a lot of people are going to see it for that. No, their's probably going to see it for the destruction scenes. And they indeed get some of their moneys worth when the mother ship destroys all of Great Britain. Though that scene by itself is one of the coolest in the movie, overall the film really doesn't feel like it has as much destruction as the first film. In that one, multiple cities were wiped off the map. Here, that does happen, but it doesn't feel like its on the same scale. I'm sort of okay with it because it helps the film not be a rehash of the original. Plus it helps that the aliens use some new tactics against the people of earth. But those who wanted bigger city destruction scenes might leave the theater disappointed.

4. The movie does have plot holes, as every movie does. But there is one that I would like to bring up here. The movie establishes that the aliens are controlled by a Queen Alien through a hive mind link, and that if she dies, all the aliens die with her. There is also another kind of alien introduced in the movie, one that is somewhat of a natural enemy to the invading aliens on earth. There is only one of it though, and its some sort of technical sphere. The movie tells us these things, and then reveals to us that if the Queen Alien senses the presence of spherical alien, she will go herself to destroy said spherical alien. Which she does in the movie, leading to her death and the end of the aliens attacking the planet. My question is, why didn't the Queen Alien just send her army of ships to destroy the sphere if she wanted it to be destroyed so bad? Why risk getting herself killed if it meant her army would fall with her? This sort of feels like an out given to the humans to defeat the aliens IMO.

Overall, this is a decent summer film. I personally wasn't too disappointed with it because I didn't go see it with the highest expectations. I thought that some of things the movie did were clever, but the story still wasn't the best. I'm still glad I saw it though, as I at least got some entertainment out of it.

Have any of you seen Independence Day: Resurgence? If so, what did you think of it?
