Mata Nui's Personality-- A Rant

Ever since Mata Nui appeared before our eyes for the first time in 2008, there has been a lot of complaining regarding his appearance. You know, how in my mind/your mind/Bob's mind, he was this glimmering god in armor that seared your flesh off with its shininess, wielding some weapon that only a god would carry and wearing armor in white and gold, which are the only colors a greater being is allowed to wear. (I always personally thought white and brown, maybe with gold-- after about 2007 this color scheme shifted in my mind to being more appropriate for Artakha). For examples of the many ways people viewed Mata Nui, sort through here for a while.

It makes me wonder-- what kind of screaming/whining/moaning fits will ensue when we actually see Mata Nui's personality? After all, everything about his personality was just as unknown as his appearance prior to this year. All we knew about him was that apparently he deserved respect (which naturally made everyone think that he must be a god, because nothing less than perfect can possibly be so important to everyone, right?)

So suppose that when we get a good look at Mata Nui's personality in the movie, he has *gasp* character traits? Suppose he has *double gasp* flaws? Already people have objected to that he has a pet insect-- after all, a being who has cared for hundreds of thousands of Matoran surely can't have compassion!

Yes, it's true, Mata Nui's personality will probably not be exactly as you imagined. And of course, his personality will therefore be terrible and bad and the death of BIONICLE. In fact, perhaps Mata Nui should have never woken up at all, and the Toa Mata should have stayed on Mata Nui fighting scores of new enemies every year, presumably helping this soulless entity Mata Nui somehow, despite his condition never changing. Better that we not risk the disappointment, eh?

To sum up, Mata Nui has woken up, just as we knew he would since 2001. Perhaps it's time for fans to do the same.

You say sarcastically that he can't have compassion, but Greg's said before he really didn't care about the Matoran, only that his body was working. Since Matoran were integral, he had to keep them alive etc, but he didn't care about individuals.

...and perhaps Click will help him learn to care about individuals, or something. I don't have any idea what role Click will play in story (though I have theories). But the way some people talk about him losing his mysteriousness and ambiguity it's as if they'd rather he never woke up and we never actually got to see the Great Spirit, and that's what bothers me.

It's a lot like the Teridax issue-- many people know the only way for the story to proceed is for mysteries to get revealed, and in the Teridax issue they made that knowledge clear by the way they voted. But when the revelation is contrary to their liking (even if it's an aspect of the story to which the story team has long known the answer), they fuss that it should never have been revealed. People need to understand that the way you imagined BIONICLE is not necessarily how it's ever been imagined by the man behind the curtain-- sometimes mysteries don't have the answers you want them to have.

I expect this to go on forever, most likely, and in no way think I can stop there from being a dissenting group of older fans. In fact, I expect that after a few more years of BIONICLE's story, many fans who joined in the 2006-2008 arc will become frustrated with what has been revealed since then. And the reason for this is because BIONICLE still inspires people to imagine their own stories (check the LEGO.com gallery to see BIONICLE's inspiring effects in action, if without experience's power to filter and express that inspiration).

When a person joins the story, they immediately are drawn to speculate their own future storylines, their own interpretations, and their own standards for what should or should not happen. And with the vast variety of interpretations one can have, many of these people can and should be expected to be disappointed at what really happens.

Also, The Sandman Volume 7: Brief Lives. It's part of an awesome comic series I've recently gotten into, and its main theme of "change" goes hand in hand with what I just typed (I shouldn't be surprised, since I just read it with Lyi while we were out getting supper). I'm surprised I haven't blogged about The Sandman yet; it's really beast and has been a major form of entertainment for me over the past year.

About the Click complainers: I personally love the name and concept. I dislike the set.

Agreed. The set seems quite sub-par. A reasonably clever build for a small "giveaway" promotional set, but it utterly fails to evoke the feel of the actual scarabax Click who appears in the movie.

Also, I do not at all understand the two images posted above. The "Ruined Forever" alarm would seem to be relevant to the entry, but I'm not sure if the person is agreeing or disagreeing with my argument. The "free internet" coupon would appear to be a rebuttal of some sort. But regardless of their meaning, I got a good lol out of both, so we're cool.

I'm agreeing, I just post that sorta thing in these kinda entries because it works so well.

It usually makes sense to me, too, but then I usually see them in briefer entries. When a person posts an image macro in response to a long, drawn-out tirade, it's pretty hard to figure out what part of the entry the macro regards. So it's not a problem, it just puzzled me.
