Brickcon Entry
Yes, I know I'm a couple of days from going. But, as it started today, I felt like posting a poem I wrote last year which centered on last year's Con. (Reason I haven't posted it until now was because I wasn't sure where it would go. )
The line stretches out for blocks
In the city’s autumn chill
Shivering
Beneath the shadow of the towering Needle
But we don’t notice or care
It’s what we’ve been waiting for
Toddlers shriek
Parents trying to keep them in line
Slightly self-conscious teens
Worrying inside about what their friends would think
If they found out
But in the end, they couldn’t care less
In their excitement
And in the crowd, me
Just another face
Clutching a camera
Nervous and excited in unequal measure
There are those that
Talk about this and that
But it’s just inane babble to me
As I wait to get to the door
Finally there
I offer my tribute to the door-person
Who accepts, and lets me into the hall
Wall to wall
Packed with strangers
People I’ve never seen
In real life
But we are united by a common passion
Why else would we pay $11
Just to look at LEGO Bricks?
Near the back, a section of tables
I rush towards them
Eager to see who I know will be there:
Fellow fans
Whom I’ve only spoken to before
Through forums, private messages, and AIM
Portrayed by avatars and profiles
And their sayings of the day
I sign myself in on the little piece of paper
Using the name they know me as
Along with a tagline
A shout-out to those that couldn’t come
Standing on the stairs
Striking a pose with
Others
A girl’s put a Visorak on her head
Beaming behind her glasses
Click click click
Go the cameras
Snapping our images into photographic memory
Back in the crowd
The sea of humanity
Vendors along the walls
Selling merchandise
Ranging from lamps to earrings
To T-shirts – I still have mine
300 and Watchmen
Halo and pagodas
All portrayed
By the colorful blocks
The Space Needle
Has been shrunk down to size
And sold in little cardboard boxes
Immortalized in grey LEGO Bricks
Sitting on tables everywhere by now
Star Wars, block-style
Playing silently near the food line
It’s all different, and it will all change
By the time next year’s BrickCon
Rolls around
Forgive the bright red; I figured it fit the color of the Lego brick better than another color. =/
