    Kind of like Knives.

    Knives Chau, that is.

Except his name's actually just Matau. Not Sawblades.

There's also this one if you want an alternate view. He's still a WIP because his back needs filling in and I'm not 100% satisfied with the torso, but I wanted to post something before I'm separated from my pieces for six weeks...

Apparently this is what happens when I finally acquire the Turaga's Kanohi. I don't remember how exactly the idea for his weapons came to be, but it involved the concept of the Toa versions of the Turaga having tools that resembled their staffs. And somehow that turned into giant buzz saw nunchucks of doom. Not that I'm complaining.

Also, it should be pretty obvious that we're ignoring Metru Nui right now. This is a Toa Matau strictly from the jungles of Mata Nui.

Also also, I go back to college tomorrow. Aaaaahh!!

I just realized I don't think I've blogged about my summer job at all this year. Huh. But then, I haven't blogged too much in general.

Anyway! I did the same thing as I did last summer, working for NYPIRG (the New York Public Interest Research Group), canvassing again – going door-to-door, for those not in the know – raising money for environmentalism and other awesome things like that. The difference being that now I'm better at it, so it took me three weeks to earn what I did in the month and a half I worked there last year. I work on commission on what I raise, see. And if it doesn't come too close to bragging, I had three weeks this summer where I raised more than $1000 in one week – kind of a big deal. I didn't even know that was possible last year.

But, now that I've done this for two years, I'm not sure how I'll ever be able to stand having a normal job. I really like sleeping in every day, being able to talk back to and make fun of my boss, and going out and having adventures for like two hours before we really start work.

It'll be nice to eventually have hourly wage and maybe be home for dinner on weekdays again, but I like having a job where I'm out there actually making a difference and working for something extremely important. It's gonna feel weird if I ever work for some big corporation where I actually deal with consumerism or have a real boss or whatever.

Also: this summer confirms that Boulevard of Broken Dreams is the perfect song to describe canvassing. You're walking down a street, all alone, facing rejection at door after door...

And now we come to another one of the best parts of Brickfair: what I got there! (Slightly after the epic people and memories in order of awesomeness.) And I got quite a lot.

Might as well start with sets. I got the Medieval Market Village, the Deep Sea Striker (a.k.a. the giant scorpion from the Atlantis line), and Rotor for 50% off at Casual Shopping with the Bulls, then won the Shadow Crawler from Exo-Force in Bingo (it's the one with the lime Kodan claw, which is all that matters), and finally bought Skateboarding Pepper from the Lego Island Extreme Stunts series for only $5, which I've wanted since it first came out! I was quite thrilled about him.

And then I got a lot of other stuff, which was just as awesome!

First, a huge bag of 2001 Kanohi from Janus, which were his half of a trade that I haven't fulfilled my end of yet. But until I do I want him to know that he is super amazing and I love him! (and not just for this!) I'm also obligated to give him dipping sauce until I do.

There's actually one mask in that photo that doesn't belong there. Can you spot it?

That's because of the next trade I engaged in, in which I gave DV some brownies in exchange for a blue and a green Matatu! Most awesome trade ever.

And some more pieces I got:

On the left are a bunch of parts I bought from a couple stores at Brickfair – the pieces for Nokama, a bunch of noble Kanohi, and the heads and masks of the Turaga I don't have. (I decided to finally get my act together and just buy the pieces for the rest of them.) Plus an extra blue Tohunga body so I can have Maku and Hahli at the same time! And the gold is from a custom bricks store that I had a coupon for, so I just went there and thought "why not?" since they were effectively free.

And then on the right is a mess of stuff that I got from Nikira! She brought a big tub of Bionicle stuff and Janus and DV and I went through it and took what was interesting to us. She's so generous! Thank you, Deb! <3

I think I'll leave the photos of this for another entry, but thanks to Janus I am now only two Kanohi away from having all 36 from the original Toa! I just need a brown Pakari and a green Kaukau and then that'll be it! And thanks to him and that one store I'm also really close to getting all the Turaga's as well, but I don't yet have a complete set of any of theirs.

Thank you Rob and Pat and Deb <3

Prior to one week ago, my repertoire of BZP members I had met consisted of only two: Black Six and HauNuva (if anyone even remembers him).

That has changed now, and so I shall list everyone as a sort of thank-you for all the amazing memories they provided me!
Smeagol4 (attacked me as I got out of the airport) Janus (see above) Darth Vader (protected me from the above two) Hahli Husky (Disney singalong <3) Senjo (is a spectacular cook, and can do just about anything!) Nikira (is beautiful!) TwingDing (we became friends after about two days and <3) LehvakLah (one-letter-difference name!) Friar Tuck (is highly responsible and highly cool) Rayg (gives excellent art advice and is a sexy fellow) Nuju Metru (dude, why have I never talked to you before? We need to sing together!) Kohaku (<3) VampyreAri (is cuddly) Primus (is a really cool guy and we had an awesome conversation while waiting in line for an hour and a half at the Lego store) Nukaya (was looking dashing in her polo shirt and explorer hat, and is super adorable and cute and and and) Sisen (is quiet but neat) Arpy (fun with posing for photos) ChocolateFrogs (those mosaics were epic. cc: Nukaya) Vezok's Friend (is a good artist) Waffles (pretty sure the entire BZP staff wants to adopt him) Kanohi Zatth (Janus and I spent a good while looking through an enormous tub of Bionicle pieces for sale with him and Waffles) Stubbed Toa (didn't get to talk to you much, but your art is cool and you know it dablackcat (no one's ever asked to take a photo with me before!) Spink (wishing we had hung out more) Disky (see above!) And lots of these lovely people took equally lovely photos, which I can't wait to see because they're all better than mine. I like this one a lot (thanks, Arpy!) of the ones that have shown up so far. And can't wait for the Hahli Mahri and Hahli Mahri shots that I know a few people took. :3

    Oh my god.

Brickfair was basically the best weekend of my life. In brief. I'll be going into detail a lot more in later entries, but I think that will do nicely as a summary for now. I met so many awesome people and we had epic times hanging out and at Brickfair and dressing up in fancy clothes to go to completely non-fancy restaurants (with Steve Witt!). It was amazing getting to see all these friends I knew online in person, and their MOCs and art (had some fun sketchbook exchanges with Rayg and LehvakLah), and I'm really really sad that I had to leave and come back to my normal life afterward. I miss everyone so much.

For now, I'm going to give you a statistical breakdown of my time at Brickfair:
original 2001 Kanohi acquired: 37 awesomeness of Janus: 100% misprints acquired: 2 Lego sets bought: 4 Lego sets gotten for free: 2 total value of sets acquired: ≈$163 amount paid for said sets: $75 members met for the first time: 24 (I think) volumes of Scott Pilgrim read: 5 dipping sauce references made: at least 4 hours of sleep gotten per night: never more than 6 generosity of everyone I met: 100% birds sighted flying around the jetBlue terminal at JFK airport: 7 things people said that I wish I could write down because of how funny they were: too many amount of people who love Waffles: infinite hugs: too many to count. <3 More details will be forthcoming! ~ ToM

I've had this idea brewing in my head for literally a year. And since Kohaku agreed with it, here we go:

We should assemble a massive army of Bionicle crabs at Brickfair.

Seriously. Think about how spectacular that would be. If loads of us BZPers who came to Brickfair or sent MOCs brought along a crab or two each, we could very quickly assemble an awful lot of them. People can build Ussals in various colors, bring Hahnah crabs from Jaller Mahri, and maybe even a few Rock Ussals from the VNOLG could make an appearance. At the very least my rock ussal will be there:

I feel like including Pewku from 2003 would just be excessive, since all the rest of the crabs are small and cute and then she'd just be this ginormous behemoth and it would be bad.

I think we should totally make this happen. Masses of little technic crabs. Just for the hilarity of it and the confusion it would cause on the other AFOLs' faces.

    Who's with me?

It's been a long while since I've gone out and taken photos of Tohunga around my yard. I miss it. I mean, partly it's because I've been at college and all that, but it's also been because of a lack of new Kanohi from which to make new Tohunga. But I have some now!

First up is Shenyu, whom those of you who have been with me for a loooong time just may remember.

He's the reason I've been craving a dark blue Miru since 2003. He's a Ga-Matoran (and yes, male) who goes on a series of adventures with Hahli way back before Metru Nui (please pay no attention to canon right now), and was transformed into a Toa of Water by Mata Nui to save her from drowning in a storm, after which she never saw him again. I originally had him as a Toa of Gravity, but eventually decided I like water better.

    Next!

This lovely lady does not have a name yet. And no, I don't actually own a dark blue Matatu. It's from Six's big bag of prototypes; I brought down Hahli's body when I stayed with him for ToyFair expressly for the sake of taking this photo. I wish it were mine, but hey, I have a dark blue Miru at long last, I can't possibly ask for more!

But she does still need a name. Please suggest one. Keep to 2001 naming standards. If I see x's and multiple consonants in a row besides ng, nk, and nt I will bite you.

And finally – no more photos because I don't like the ones I took – I also need a name for a Ta-Matoran with a yellow Komau, red body, and yellow feet. I think he's a lava farmer for some reason.

This came about because I was at one of my friend's houses recently going through a big plastic set of drawers he has filled with his old Lego stuffs, among which were a bunch of Bionicle sets. He had the Manas and let me keep their masks, so now I finally have the yellow Komau and an orange Ruru!

It also made me realize how drastically I lack the Turaga's Kanohi. I need to work on that.

    Guys

    Guys

I just bought my plane tickets to fly down to and from Washington DC on a certain weekend early in August

I AM OFFICIALLY GOING TO BRICKFAIR.

    OH MY GOD.

Just felt like taking this picture, which I've kind of wanted to for a while.

The rarer masks that I have. I was debating between the infected Hau and the gold Vahi for the seventh slot and eventually chose the Hau just because I felt like the Vahi was slightly more common. Slightly. More opportunities to get it, and in cheaper sets. Plus I have four of them and only one infected Hau... so yeah.

Still on my list are a copper Komau, maybe a yellow Kaukau, and really any of the misprint Matatu. And of course the prototype Kanohi from Six, or at least the ones I can get my hands on.

Next order of business, a WIP:

Which I shall be bringing (yes, bringing, not sending) to Brickfair. I'm looking forward to finishing it, because it uses some of the flashier ideas I've had drifting around... Currently just having a lot of fun making the texture smooth.

And I have some more new things I'm working on and planning to bring besides.

So at this point I'm rather out of the loop when it comes to less-than-major storyline developments (among them anything at all from the serials). I happened to see the other day that the color scheme for Lighting had been revealed – blue and white – to which my response was "wha — when was this decided — why isn't it yellow—". Since lightining had seemed to me one of the simpler Kal elements to assign a color to, given that bright yellow (Jala yellow, if you will) is the color pretty much universally associated with electricity.

Not that white and blue are bad or illogical, they just seemed to be missing the obvious answer, especially since bright yellow has only ever been used as a tertiary color, making it rather unused as far as elemental colors go, thus making it a prime candidate for having its own element. Whereas blue-and-white is a combination of two of the primary colors of Bionicle.

Anyway, that's not the subject of this entry. Well, I guess it is, but we'll get to it later. Basically, having seen this, I saw that there was a poll about the secondary color for Plasma and immediately began dreading finding out what it would be. Something like "oh dear gods what strange colors are they going to chose this time why can't we just leave these in peace rather than assigning weird combinations to things that are never going to have set forms now"

See, a very long time ago, I decided that the color scheme for Plasma in my version of things – if I ever needed a Toa of Plasma – would be orange and white. Since Plasma is obviously white-hot, rather than having a specific color (hence, white), I went for the non-primary Bionicle color that best conveyed heat: orange. Thus, orange would be Plasma's main color, white its secondary.

So you'll imagine my surprise when I clicked on the poll in immense trepidation to find out what the canon color for Plasma was and found out it was, in fact, orange. And then I dared to vote in the poll and, lo and behold, the leading secondary color was white.

Wow. Whoever you are, congratulations on being logical for once.

This led me to look around BS01 a little tonight, seeing what other Kal-and-post elements had been doomed to weird color schemes, upon which I found that Magnetism had indeed been canonized as grey and black (unsurprising given Jovan, but a little disappointing since they're already the dominant colors of Earth) and Sonics' primary color was grey (again unsusprising, given Krakua).

And then I looked at Iron and was utterly flabbergasted to see that its color scheme was – wait for it – iron grey and dark orange. As anyone who read The Iron Ghost will recall, that was exactly the color scheme I assigned Toa Angara. So to see it canonized as the color scheme for Iron was more than a bit incredible. Ladies and gentlefolk who follow these matters, would you be so kind as to tell me when and by whom this was decided?

Anyway. Since I've alluded to these a few times already, I might as well just list the color schemes I've come up with for the Kal and later elements. One thing to be noted is that I did base a lot of them on the Kal's color associations; i.e., Tahnok-Kal, who controlled Lightning, was a Ta-set, so I took Lightning's color from the Fire column.

In order of primary color, secondary color, and tertiary color:

Lightning :: Yellow, white, light blue – Yellow and white are explained above, and also the colors of Toa Ingyé from Hunger. I think the specific origin of light blue was an MOC by Toromaga some time ago of a light blue Turaga of Lightning next to a yellow Toa of Lightning.
Magnetism :: not sure. I'd be okay with dark grey as the primary color if it were specifically dark bluish grey from post-2004 rather than the basic dark grey of 2003 and before. Since then it would have both a blue tint (for Gahlok-Kal) and the association with metal inherent to Magnetism. Maybe dark bluish grey, black, and sand blue...
Plasma :: Orange, white – as explained above.
Gravity :: Purple, black – again both taken from the Onu-column because of Nuhvok-Kal. Though I could never see a Toa of Gravity being solid purple with black joints; it would have to be restricted to smaller amounts of purple over a largely black/some other color body.
Sonics :: Light grey – and that's all I've got. Also taken from the Ko-column. Maybe light grey, dark grey, and lime... For my remake of 2009 I contemplated throwing lime into Krakua's set, and now that I think about it, that would make a nice link between Sonics and Air, the medium they travel in.
The Green :: All shades of green that there are. I don't care if Air has those already; plants are green, my dears.
Iron :: Iron grey, dark orange

I reject the element of Psionics, since that's hardly a force of the natural world.

That was longer than I was planning to write. Oops.

Since this came up in the comments of last entry, I figured I would just make an entry about it to discuss it in full...

So. Crystal. I've seen the idea for it as an element come up in quite a few places, and if it were up to me (and apparently to quite a few others), I'd have canonized Crystal as an element rather than Psionics. If we're sticking with Lego's ridiculous one-gender-per-tribe scheme, it would be female. Because goodness knows Bionicle needs more female elements.

The idea occurred to me yesterday that, perhaps, Crystal would be a rather rare element. I have this image of there being one single village of Crystal Matoran, led by a Turaga of Crystal, and then out in the rest of the universe Crystal Matoran would be few and far between. And then I had thought this village would be located deep under the mountains somewhere, very far removed from all the other villages or cities, and the Matoran would probably have made their home in some vast cavern filled with giant crystals that very few outsiders had ever seen...

Which led me to decide on their color scheme. Originally, I had thought Matoran and Toa of Crystal would be, say, ice blue or clear aquamarine or just transparent white over white bodies, but I've had a better idea now, based on the fact that they live deep underground: Their masks and armor and feet and hands and such would be transparent versions of every color, and their bodies underneath would be black. For example, clear colors where Ackar has orange, and black where he has red.

So it would essentially be a rainbow element, with no one fixed primary color (though whatever primary color a Matoran or Toa had would be transparent). And, maybe, there would be really rare Matoran of Crystal whose bodies actually have every color of the rainbow in their crystal parts, so they would change color depending on the light and angle they're seen from...

Thus, I guess, they would also have all different colors of eyes.

And the Matoran themselves would be masterful with all kinds of crystal, lightstones and heatstones and carving natural crystal and glass and obsidian and all things of that sort... Though the village itself wouldn't trade with anyone, being so isolated, but Matoran of Crystal out in the universe would probably set up stands selling crystal carvings and whatnot.

I really do wish it could be both genders canonically, though. Maybe then certain colors of Matoran would correspond to either gender... but maybe not. In any story I actually write with this, there will be both genders, that's for sure.

Wow. I guess that's the element all figured out for my purposes, now. What do you guys think, or what have you come up with for your own stuff?
    ~ ToM
  13. ToM Dracone
I came to a realization, a few minutes ago while just thinking about random stuff:

Almost all of the revelations of long-standing Bionicle mysteries that I've hated were revealed for the sake of revealing them, rather than because they had any relevance to the plot at the time. The ones that were relevant to the plot, I did like.

Where the Bohrok came from -> Avotoran? Possibly the single plot development I hate the most of all of Bionicle. Was it revealed through some actual element of 2008's plot? No, the Nuva just randomly came upon some thrashing Avotoran for the sake of revealing where Bohrok came from. Origin of the Exo-Toa -> they're just a commonplace element of Makuta's armies? Boring. Did Exo-Toa have anything to do with 2005, even its backstory? Nope. Just thrown in there. Give me time and I'll probably come up with more of these.

In contrast: What does Mata Nui look like physically -> He's the entire universe? One of the most dramatic, well-executed animations from all of Bionicle, and kind of central to the plot at the moment, which was the awakening of the Great Spirit.

So, moral of the story: if you set something up as a grand mystery, don't reveal the answer in an aside. Unveil it in a way appropriate to how mysterious it was.

I'd append this with something about "in my opinion" but I think this is generally regarded as just common sense in the realm of writing. Your feelings about the revelations named may vary, however.

It really feels like the WIP from six entries ago is going to end up using every single black axle/pin I have. Probably won't quite get there, but I don't remember the last time I built something with so many of them so close together. It also makes me really glad I've been stocking up on random green and lime Technic pieces for the past few years, because I've used a heck of a lot of them.

    Relatedly, I feel like I should just buy extra copies of the interestingly-colored pieces from certain sets (like all the lime and orange in the Nui-Rama) so I don't have to keep tearing them apart. I like my Nui-Rama. And I want to rebuild the Exo-Toa and Ussanui, too, but I think they both have parts deeply buried in MOCs right now. ;_;

Anyway. I'm really looking forward to displaying this MOC at Brickfair. I think she's one of the solidest MOCs I've ever made, and uses some ideas I've wanted to do for -ages-.

(also really glad I've been stocking up on dark blue, but I still need more perpendicular axle joiners! Augh!)

I usually don't get involved in these mass popular effort-type things, but I had an idea last night for a banner for the 10th graphic novel, and since I can never resist making banners, here it is:

I feel the need to splurge about this somewhere.

Yesterday, at long last, I watched Glee for effectively the first time (all I had seen before was about fifteen minutes from "Wheels"). Since, you know, I've been at college the whole time it's been on (no time to watch) and don't ever watch TV or TV shows anyway. But, a couple friends and I got pizza and had a Glee-watching party for the benefit of the two of us who hadn't seen it before.

    And.

I'm in love. Only an afternoon and I'm addicted to Kurt. And Chris Colfer. It's only been eight episodes! I felt great pain handing in the DVDs we had rented; I didn't want to part with them so soon. Sigh. Forcing myself to wait for the next time we can do this will not be easy. (Though I already had a few things spoiled for me thanks to wikipedia... oops.)

Real life needs to include more spontaneous musicals to express our feelings. I do my best to make them happen with my friends every now and then.

Really? Did I really let that happen?

    Dangit. I guess I did.

Yeah. I wasn't planning on going the whole second half of the semester without an update here. It just sort of happened. You know how it is. Especially if you're in college.

In my defense, I'm not sure I've ever had a more eventful two months. Performed in two concerts with my acapella group. Went on a date for the first time. I had three weeks of insanity at the very end – one week with an enormous assignment or a test every single day thereof, then two weeks of constant paper-writing and studying for finals on massive amounts of material. (Which I couldn't write beforehand because of all the other assignments I had, of course.) But, punctuating that were some fantastic times with some fantastic new friends I didn't meet until just this half of the semester. I've also been experiencing severe tech crew withdrawal. Can't wait for next semester to get started again. Also because then I'll have a single and I have some great ideas for my room.

(Oh, and, I guess there's that whole alternate universe Makuta thing. Thanks, guys. <3 Loving Shan's Iron Wolf, too.)

I think I'm going to have to imitate DV and make one of those lists of things I learned this year to cover it all.

On the whole I'm glad it's summer. I've only been back for a day and I've gotten a lot done. But, I miss my college friends a lot. Really acutely so for a select few of them. But then, I have all summer with my high school friends and that'll be fun.

Also expect some more Bionicle stuff from me soon. For real now. I might even make new graphics for this...

There we go. As always, you can find more pictures over in the gallery (once that becomes public). There are a few alternates of the entry picture (the far left) using different lighting; I eventually settled on the one I did because I thought it best combined aesthetically pleasing light with clarity of the details of the MOC.

And if I may say so myself, that hammer is one of my favorite things I've ever built. Had a lot of fun with it.

Now, off to enter this on BS01...

Since I missed it, thanks for all the birthday wishes over in my birthday topic, guys! Sorry I didn't post in it; I saw it earlier in the day and then kinda forgot to check back until it was too late...

Spring break ended two days ago for me, so I actually had a couple festivity-things before coming back here. One was just with my parents, where I got Enchanted and Slumdog Millionaire (<3 both), the new Celtic Woman CD, Songs from the Heart (as great as ever), and a couple more practical things, one of which was a Macy's gift card I used the next day to get a couple shirts in aquamarine and lime. And then the day after that, I got to see two of my best friends in the afternoon, who I haven't seen since I left for college, so that was excellent. Then I had a proper party in the evening with four of my other friends (who are still in high school). There was cake and pizza and Bananagrams and Inglorious Basterds and it was a ton of fun.

And now I'm back at college. I didn't really do anything special yesterday beyond letting myself goof off more than usual. But it rained and so the weather was perfect, and I also had some fun with a clip-on earring and got a haircut. Combining the latter two made me look like a lesbian for a while. It was funny.

Oh! I also got star!Tahu for myself. He's a fun little set, definitely a good tribute to the original Tahu. But I changed the Nuva shoulder pad to black and now he looks much more natural. And more 2001-like!

The health care bill was kind of like an early present too!

So yeah. I've actually even had less homework than I expected! So it was a good birthday all around.

    As promised!

Started out as a doodle in Astronomy class, imagining the Akaku with a visor. I liked the idea, and I've never liked the real Akaku Phantoka (though it -would- be acceptable if it only had the scope on the right side), so I decided to go with the concept and translate the rounded, organic features of the Akaku Nuva into the more angular, geometric style of the more recent masks. I kept a few features of the real Akaku Phantoka – namely the lens and bits of the mouth area – and the final thing will still have a lightsaber blade in the lens, only aquamarine instead of red.

And I'm quite pleased with the result. What do you think?
