Brown mold-like dots on old pieces

I recently found a tub of old pieces that I had not seen in years. However, many of them have small brown dots on them that should not be there. It seems to be some kind of mold, and I was wondering if anybody else has experienced this, and how to get rid of it. I tried rinsing it off, and in many cases it was in crevices that could not be reached with my fingers. Also, I would like to know if there is a way to clean an entire tub of them without inspecting and taking out each individual piece. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Ammonia actually is known to kill mold. So perhaps rinse the whole bucket in ammonia water?

If you try that, be sure to rinse the parts thoroughly before using them again. Ammonia is nasty stuff, and you don't want any of it on your fingers when building.
