  1. I wonder if for 2001 people, because you guys have known the story so well for so long, the story becomes stale or overly familiar?

I think the problem was the opposite. For 2001-4, the characters mostly stayed the same - Tahu and co, Vakama and co, the Matoran, and Makuta. It was from around 2005-6 that all these other characters and places appeared, mostly in the books, that had had no presence at all in the early years. So the story in later years often got almost unrecognisable from how it had been in the early years. I think this might explain a lot of the divide you mentioned.

  2. It's almost like there were two Bionicle lines - the first years (or year) with rich media, charming and memorable characters, an interesting sense of mystery, then all the following years with very complex and overserious story, overcrowded cast, and most of the media that isn't the books being non-canon.

Nothing punctuates this feeling quite like the fact that none of the links in any Bionicle media work anymore.

Even www.bionicle.com doesn't lead anywhere now.

The reason it wasn't gonna be finished in time was because the final build they showed Lego was a disaster, owing to Sapphire Studio's mismanagement. So Lego pulled the plug.

I've always wanted to know who was really at fault here. Did Saffire/Sapphire just take too long, or were Lego unrealistic in expecting a whole game to be completely ready in less than a year?

  4. It's been suggested that that image is from the game, but I have doubts about that because it looks like a shot from a cutscene and the game's three cutscenes don't include Makuta.

Do we know for sure that the game would've had the Makuta scene?

the game is cancelled because it has problems, like the glitches and the fact that it was 90% completed

I think the main problem was that it wasn't going to be finished in time for the year it was meant to be about and the sets it was meant to advertise.

  5. Well since his first post he has always added #14B2020, I'm still wondering if it'll come to a head sometime next year.

And with the hashtag #14B2020 I'm assuming he will fully reveal it sometime within 2020.

Perhaps, but why would he start posting about it almost a whole year before?

I mean, original Bionicle wasn't exactly announced in April 2000.

  6. It's been half a year since he started posting, surely if anything really big was going to come of this it would've happened by now, he/they wouldn't keep us waiting this long.

  7. I loved Bionicle for a long time, but this was heart-breaking. Why would Lego do this?

It wasn't selling as well as it used to and Lego wanted to make something new.

Maybe they should cancel it again as a way to celebrate the anniversary.

They've already cancelled it again. :p

A part of me wishes that it had a more complete ending, the unfinished loose ends drive me crazy ( Velika!) it almost would have been easier if the unfinished serials hadn't been started at all.

The idea at the time was that Bionicle sort of wasn't ending as it would continue in story, but of course Greg gave up after a few years.

  8. See what I'm wondering is

if Lhikan could have evaded capture, would he have still become a Turaga or stayed a Toa to train the others more effectively?

Didn't he have to become a Turaga for them to become Toa? ("Where did your power go?" "It lives on in all of you!")

And if he were a Toa when he confronted Teridax, maybe he could have survived?

He would've had more of a chance at least.

(also his death seemed anticlimactic too. What is more powerful, Teridax or Vahi? NOPE-old man beats both)

How is dying in the climax to save a friend anticlimactic?

I think they're wondering whether a powerless, weaponless, inexperienced toa vakama would have been enough to help lhikan fight off nidhiki and krekka so that he effectively never would have gone to prison. Then maybe he might have been able to alter the timeline enough to have never died. Personally I think vakama would have been less than useless to help lhikan fight off nidhiki and krekka, and they would have both ended up trapped. Then, without vakamas visions, the other toa wouldn't have collected the great discs so that the morbuzukah would have won.  I suppose lhikan would have survived because the morbuzukah would have killed everyone else and teridax would've won....

If Teridax/Makuta won, why would he want or need to keep Lhikan alive?

Just to be clear, my point was that whether or not Lhikan was captured didn't change whether or not he died, because his death (during Vakama facing Makuta) had nothing to do with the capture.

I mean, it does make me wonder if Lhikan would have still died if he had turned the Matoran into the Toa Metru as he found them... would he still have been captured if Vakama could have helped him? Yes inexperienced and toolless, but still....

Lhikan escaped capture with some of the Toa, then his death happened in a separate situation and by then the Matoran had been Toa for quite a while, so whether the Matoran became Toa when he visited them or (as it happened) a bit later wouldn't have changed his ultimate fate.

Aside from looking cool, their power is having the abilities of all six of their Great Kanohi (Shielding, Vision, Water-breathing, Levitation, Speed and Strength) in a single mask. They can still only use one power at a time, but it means they no longer need to switch masks if they want to use a different power.

It's a small advantage, but even a small amount of time saved can be hugely useful in the right circumstances.

In the Toa/Makuta MNOLG clip, Kopaka and Onua switch to the Kakama and Hau to use their powers even though they have gold masks.

Their transformation was not normal by any means. The lightning from the Red Star isn't the same as a Toa Stone, so it resulted in their bodies becoming some weird new design. This is made clearer by the fact that their bodies had other weird properties, like glowing faces, elemental energy intertwined with lightning, etc. When they became Toa Mahri, their transformation was under the Ignika's jurisdiction, so they had no say in that instance either.

So is a transformation only normal if it's through a Toa Stone? Was Takua's transformation not normal when it was caused by a mask?

  13. I believe the whole idea started to explain why Takanuva looks like a Toa Nuva and not a Toa Mata.

I think it was canon for the sole reason to explain why the metru matoran looked like lhikan and why takua turned into something looking like a toa nuva even though he never underwent nuva transformation.

If this is true, why didn't Jaller and co look like Toa Nuva or Takanuva when they became Toa?

  14. I know they were published around that time. But I brought them up to nitpick your original wording - they cover pre-MoL and have Lewa speaking that way.

Does my wording need to be 'nitpicked'?

The basic point here is that Lewa not speaking in Treespeak in the early comics wasn't a mistake because there was no rule at the time that he should. All media with him speaking in Treespeak dates from mid-2003 onwards, whatever Bionicle period it covers.

As for TLOMN, while other sources may not have had Lewa use Treespeak until 2003... I think it's a possibility. After all, Farshtey (who hates Treespeak/Chutespeak; notice that Kongu doesn't speak it in Challenge of the Rahi) was less involved with that game and its dialogue.

Farshtey wasn't involved in MNOLG at all and Lewa didn't speak Treespeak there either, plus TLOMN doesn't look like it had much dialogue (there isn't any in the three cutscenes) so who knows if Lewa speaks in it at all?

In any case, the game was never actually released so it doesn't carry much weight.

  15. Actually, he also spoke it in the Bionicle Chronicles books

Although they cover the 2001-2 story, they were published at around the time of MOL.

and I believe in the MNOG, where it originated (although I haven't gotten far enough in that to see for myself.

Definitely not in MNOLG: "Wait, Tahu! Have you given no thought to our return?" "The Rahi are fearsome. May their hearts prove greater than their size would suggest!"

Treespeak in MNOLG is spoken only by Le-Matoran.

Also, no idea as to whether he uses it in TLOMN

I doubt it, as that was made in 2001 and, like I said, he didn't speak it until 2003.

Oh, and among the recurring art errors: Matoro is miscolored.

There was a topic some years back that listed the comic problems and this was something I mentioned.

  16. Lewa seems a bit out of character and doesn't speak in treespeak like he should

There wasn't a 'should' about this when the comics were written. He didn't speak in Treespeak until MOL in the third year. Who decided on this change, why they did and how that fits with the non-Treespeak before then I don't exactly know.

  17. I have a vague memory of arguing with one of my buddies who thought that Pohatu was a girl because he had a more "girly shape" (7 year old boys: funny AND offensive!)

Seeing as the female body is wide around the hips (whereas the male body is wide around the shoulders), I can see where your buddy was coming from.

To be honest, I would be more hype for a new LEGO-original constraction thing than Bionicle's return; I'm of the opinion that constraction is Bionicle's legacy, and it's a shame that the format isn't being used right now for an original property.

I agree. If Bionicle does return I'd like Lego to do something new and different with it rather than just have Tahu and co landing on an island with villages to stop Makuta yet again.
