I've taking a liking to noses, as they're where i start when i draw faces. If you have the nose, you directly know where the brow is; therefor the eyes. you also know the location of the mouth, and if you got all that, BOOM! you know the shape of your head.
It's good if it works for you, but my approach is usually much different... I start with 2 guidelines, one horizontal and one vertical, and then construct the face around those. However, I might try out your approach sometimes, because it sounds really sensible. =)
